telnet and Gnome logins
Hello, I have a thin client user with a regular Gnome desktop that he logs into everyday. He also telnets from a remote site into the same server that provides his Gnome desktop. I know, telnet is insecure, but it's all over VPN, so it's a little better. Also, he's using telnet from Windows system. Anyway, management wants a console app to be executed when that user logs in over

a-gnome-oyences
Most of my users are on kde, as am I (I really don't like gnome). I've got one on gnome, though, CentOS 6.4, and I have a problem: I have to start an agent running ->on login<-, so that the same one is in the environment of every term window he opens. In kde, no problem, I modify /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc-common so that code in there calls our (newer) ssh-agent instead of the stock one.

upgrading 7.5 ==> 7.6
hI ALL! There have been a large enough number of people posting here about difficulties when upgrading from 7. to 7.6 that I'm being somewhat paranoid about it. I have several machines to upgrade, but so far the only one I've dared to work on (least critical if it goes bad) is my new-to-me-but-used laptop. First I did a 'dd' backup of the whole drive onto an external USB drive

Loading GNOME with GDM
Hi, We have a few PC with CentOS 4 installed. By default, it runs to runlevel 5, which displays the GDM. I'm just wondering, how do I actually make the GDM to start GNOME automatically (after a successful login) for all normal user account without having to add 'exec gnome-session' in every user's ~/.xinitrc? The current scenario is, only successful 'root' logins starts

C7 and NVIDIA driver
Hi James, I tried as suggested installing cuda but the problem persist. In a previous c7.5 installation all works as expected but the driver was less then 390.77. So installing latest cuda nvidia driver for suggested links does not work. What other can I try? Launch applications on GNOME startup ?
Hi, I just installed and configured Conky, and I'd like to automatically launch it whenever I start a GNOME session. I expected to see some sort of Preferences>Launch Applications on Startup, some user-specific equivalent of rc.local, but there doesn't seem to be such an entry. Any suggestions? Niki

Gnome weather applet stranded
It looks like it was quickly fixed in MATE, hope EPEL moves fast... :) https://github.com/mate-desktop/libmateweather/issues/30#issuecomment-242190096 -- Sent from the Delta quadrant using Borg technology! Gnome weather applet stranded

The code for the respective applets is quite different. Mate uses weather.com, but I bet the API is different and a fix requires actual coding.

Wine 1.4 removes gnome-common & mate-common (link)
Hello all. Recently upgraded to Mint 13 MATE and have been following this forum post:http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=102684&p=585069&hilit=wine+mint+13+mate#p585069 Installing wine 1.4 appears to remove mate-common and gnome-common and a few other packages, playonlinux also removes the same. I don't know what damage this does but vincent on the Mint forums

Import Nautilus file notes from C6 Gnome to C7 Mate
With C6 Gnome and C7 Mate you can right-click on a file icon, select Properties, select Notes, and write notes about your file. Does anyone know if those notes can be directly transferred between C6 Gnome and C7 Mate? I'm looking into upgrading someone's desktop machine to C7 and she has a lot of notes attached to her files that she doesn't want to lose. After doing a bit of

Non-gnome desktops on CentOS-7
Is there a writeup somewhere detailing how one installs a non-gnome desktop? I have installed both KDE and Mate and both fail with the same error. (EE) no screens found. I am a bit bewildered that neither the official KDE from centos nor the semi-official mate from epel pull in as part of their install the Xserver. I am also bothered by the fact that installing a desktop other than gnome 3

using windows ad accounts for centos 5
Hi I read and used the article http://blog.wazollc.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=2 to authenticate my ad accounts when logging on to cent 5...however, once I edit the nsswitch.conf file, I can't even log on as root or any local users anymore. Kinit seems to initialize fine doing a kinit username at MYDOMAIN.COM , however doing a getent passwd adusername ....it just sits there in the shell and
