session data and user stories
hello there,
i have been trying my hand at this rbehave material, specifically in terms
of integration testing a rails application, and i am curious about the most
friendly way to deal with session data.
currently, the only way i have found to simulate a session is to open a
session and refer to everything afterward via the @session variable stored
after open_session. it seems to be workable,

trying to use Ajax.InPlaceEditor
Hi,
I''m programming a Ruby on Rails project where I am on the edit page
of /boxes/1/edit and I''m trying to make an InPlaceEditor for the color
property. (E.g. red box, blue box, etc.) My problem is that after
successfully saving the value in the database, the response I get from
the server is javascript, and it''s being rendered in the place where
the updated value is

Specifing methods in a steps_for block
Hey list,
I''m refactoring some much-used functionality into a common_steps step
group. Methods like this are in there:
steps_for :common do
Given "a number of existing $types?" do |type|
@initial_item_count = type.singularize.classify.constantize.count
end
When "the user adds an invalid $type" do |type|

Strategy pattern: comparing Context/Specify to Given/When/Then
Comments and suggestions for improving the specifications are welcome.
Thanks,
Alvin
One example comparing context/specify (CS) with given/when/then (GWT)
with a strategy pattern follows:
Consider a pipeline transporting oil supplied by multiple partners.
The amounts transported on behalf of each partner are recorded as
transactions in a general ledger.
There are multiple approaches to

YUI vs GWT vs ExtJS vs ????
I would like y''all''s opinions on ease of implementation into Rails,
quality and quantity of widgets etc between Yahoo User Interface and
Google Web toolkit and ExtJS. I am just getting ready to invest a
huge amount of effort into one of them and I would like to know what
the community''s experience has been with these toolsets. OR.. is there

"Not Implemented" doesn''t show
I''m going through Peepcode''s Rspec Basics for an overview.
He''s just doing a simple spec:
class PeepCode
end
describe PeepCode do
it "should be awsome" do
end
end
So running spec spec/simple_spec.rb should produce according to his screen
cast:
1 example, 0 failures, 1 not implemented
but I only recieve:
1 example, 0 failures
Also spec

What is SpecServer?
I have looked through the docs, looked at the code, even gave a
cursory (2 page) glance at google, and it is not clear to me what
SpecServer is or what it is for.
Is it meant to speed up the execution of specs in a rails environment
by doing some magic on the database?
Or I am thinking it keeps a copy of Rails running to avoid the rails
reload delay...
Is there any documentation on this so I

RSpec for dummies screencast?
Does anyone know of any RSpec screencasts for dummies, like me :)
I have a Java background, but I have never written a java test in my
life. I''ve never learned about TDD or BDD so I''m totally blank on
everything that has anything to do with testing and stuff.
Where should I start?!? ;)

RSpec stories introduction
I have played a bit with RSpec specs and now want to check out stories. I
note that there is no generator for rspec stories pre se (unless I managed
to miss all references to one ) and that the only directory relating to
stories added by installing rspec is ./stories itself.
The documentation at rspec.info seems to presume a great deal of prior
knowledge. What I am looking for is a guided tour

sharing story steps
Hi,
How can I have a common set of steps that all my stories share?
i.e. My stories often start out looking like this:
Given a user Joe
Given a user Jordan
then:
Given("a user $username") do |username|
@users ||= {}
@user_sessions ||= {}
@users[username] = create_user(:username => username)
@user_sessions[username] = login_as(@users[username])
end
I want to share that

Reusing story snippets
I find myself doing this:
Scenario "logged in user visiting the home page" do
Given "A logged in user" do
a_logged_in_user
end
When "..."
Then "..."
end
The a_logged_in_user method is a helper method in helper.rb which sets
up the state so that the user can browse the website.
Later in the story of course, I can just do ''Given

[LLVMdev] Type strengthening and type weakening
Has anyone done any experiments with regards to type strengthening or
weakening in the context of LLVM?
For example, the GWT compiler does type strengthening - that is, if you
are calling a method on an interface or abstract type, and the compiler
determines through live variable analysis what the concrete type is,
then it goes ahead and re-writes the type information to be the stronger

*what* to test?
So I dig rspec and BDD, of course. I thought that Dave''s Google Video
was a great intro () -- even if it was a bit heavy on theory and a bit
loose on the nuts and bolts. But I don''t see anyone sufficiently
answering the big question:
What do you test? How do you define higher level and lower level
behaviors that should have tests written for them?

Hi to all
I''m a new in ruby and RoR programming.
And my problem is Rspec.
I don''t understand how to write test files in rspec.
Maybe it''s because I don''t know ruby good.
Can you send me links to fine examples/screencasts/e-books and other
stuff.
I found some on google but it not enough :(

mapstraction as org for GSOC?
Google Summer of Code has announced the opening of applications for
Mentor organizations. Pamela Fox mentioned awhile ago that Mapstraction
may be a good fit.
http://socghop.appspot.com/
I would like to brainstorm if we have identifiable projects, and
preferably even interested students, that would like to work together on
putting in some applications. A couple of initial possibilities:

[PIMP] Topfunky''s httperf PeepCode screencast (Zed A. Shaw)
Hi,
Thanks Zed - this is very interesting. One item in particular caught my
eye: Does anyone on this list have any comments or validation that
Rails 1.2.1 is 2-4 times as slow as Rails 1.1.6? Topfunky provided a
link that purports what looks like really horrible performance and
memory characteristics for Rails 1.2.1, even v. 1.1.6:

ETA to Stories
Hey guys, just poppin in to ask if anyone knows when stories will be
somewhat stable? We''re starting to use integration tests at work,
we''re already using rspec, and I''d like to avoid integration tests if
possible.
Thanks,
