Recommended howto/guide for installing samba4 on ubuntu 12.04?
Most of what I've found involves installing from source, which I'm not opposed to for a pilot install but for production I would rather use the distro packages or sernet. Or is this nuts/shortighted/ignorant? At any rate, I'm looking for a good guide for getting it set up as an AD controller, and then migrating my existing samba3+openLDAP+autofs setup to the new platform. Having

Totally missing the mark here
I have to say I probably shouldn't have read that version 3 samba book, but I did, so I'm thoroughly confused about what I should be doing to get this server configured properly. I have installed the Sernet rpms on this server. For now, I'm going to run the AD on the same server as the file shares. Using the wiki as a guide, I've followed the provisioning but the first tests

A set of questions before building a new server
I have a Samba server here with 4 users and 4 XP systems. Kind of small, but it does the job. It is running as a PDC with roaming profiles. I should note that I left professionally supporting Windows networking around the time XP came out, so I have maintained an NTDomain through a number of incarnations (NT, Win2000, Samba2/3) and use of someone elses packaging. This time I want to use

--fuzzy search over to-be-deleted files to catch moved files and directories
Hi, I use rsync via rsnapshot to backup a large collection of files. Using "--fuzzy" already saves me a lot of time by discovering most renames that happen within a directory. Therfore I already use the "--delete-after" option. Now the question is, if fuzzy search could be extended to search for moved files across directory borders. If for example I move pictures aound to

sysvol replication and posix uid / gid mapping
Hi, I just found out the hard way that sysvol replication with rsync stoped working when I activated winbind (libnss-winbind actually) on my primary AD DC. Originally I hadn't planed to activate winbind on the primary AD DC since that machine was not meant to provide any shares. What I hadn't thought of was the fact that GPOs reside as files on the sysvol share and thus are subject

Fwd: Re: Swap: create or not?
I think I wrote not very clearly. I say ''swap in domU will save in case lag or little mistake with balloon''. If course, there is no any kind of ballooning for dom0. Right now we running pretty much VMs for our cloud services and we use heavy memory management (it grabs and gives memory with lag less then second depends on usage in customers VM). And we have some statistics

Howto migrate shares from samba 3 / ADUC changing uid/uidnumber when activating UNIX (posix) attributes
Hi, I've been using Samba 3 (standalone server, workgroup setup) for a long looong time and now I want to migrate to Samba 4 AD DC setup with clients joined to the newly created AD domain and all the bells and whistles that come with it. I've setup an AD DC (Debian wheezy with samba from backports) that will only handle authentication and a second AD DC that will also serve shares.

xen3 domU on xen4 dom0
Greetings! Trying to to run a xen3 domU on a xen4 dem0 I run into problems. The xen server ''XEN1''(dom0) is openSUSE-11.3 (kernel 2.6.34) and xen-4.0.1. With qemu I created an image ''M08.raw'' from the SUSE-9.3 (kernel 2.6.11) and XEN-3.0 installation CD''s. The XEN modules were included in the installation. In M08.raw/boot I configured grub/menu.lst:

W7 client cannot adjust file permissions via ADUC
I have been improving my DC. I now have a DC01, DC02 and a DCMEMBER01. All running sernet-samba 4.1.16 on Debian 7.8.0 thanks to Louis' (old) scripts. (Any linux client work has gone on hold, for the moment.) Next step was to adjust the file permissions as instructed on "Setup and configure file shares with Windows ACLs". When I access the "Computer Management" (thru ADUC

I have follow the wiki.samba doc and i have set the SeDiskOperatorPrivilege : net rpc rights list accounts -U'DOMAIN\administrator' DOMAIN\Domain

chown destroys ACLs
Hi, Is it normal that "chown $user $file" and "chown :$group $file" destroy the Windows-ACLs? Is it normal that changing the file owner in Windows does not change the file owner in Linux, but changing the file owner in Linux does change the file owner in Windows? This should be mentioned in >

Domain member server: user access
Arg.. wbinfo --gid-info=100 DC: Confirmed, DOMAIN\Domain Users Member: Fail. failed to call wbcGetgrgid: WBC_ERR_DOMAIN_NOT_FOUND Could not get info for gid 100 But both server show the same with : wbinfo -n "NTDOM\domain users" So imho, report bug if Rowland can confirm this with a samba from source.
