Memory allocation bug with index.search
Hi Dave ( again ! )
I''ve been searching for a while into my extension code to understand
what was the matter, and Florent Solt who hasn''t got my extension has
the same problem, so it figured to be a ferret problem.. Unfortunately,
we''re unable at the moment to reproduce it in a little code so you could
debug easilier... I''m working on it.
Heres the issue :

performance bottleneck
I have got my database in Mysql. I used ferret to index a table with 10
million rows. On limiting the selection of data to 1000 initial retrieval,
it takes 200 seconds but for the whole table it took more than four hours
and after which i had to close my indexing application. I used the
StandardAnalyser for it. There is no problem from the database side as
retrieval of all the data in the table

ActionWebService PDF...
Hello all - I''ve been lurking around the forums for awhile now and just
wanted to say that everyone here does a great job of helping each other
out...I think it goes a long way in helping even more people adopt Ruby
(and Rails)
I just wanted to let everyone know that I''m working on an online booklet
(PDF only) for O''Reilly that covers "Web Services with Ruby on

Ferret.donate(Money.aus_dollar(200))
Remember folks, we can support the Ferret project by donating warm soft
electronic cash to the author, Dave Balmain, using the paypal buttons on
the website:

We can also buy the Ferret Shortcut pdf/book from O''Reilly, also written
by Dave Balmain. It''s awesome good:

Searching different fields based on document permissions
I''m currently writing a system that stores user-created documents. Each
user belongs to a specific group, and the system supports multiple
groups. The thing is, my users want to be able to hide pieces of a
document from other groups. So for example, lets say Joe of team A has
written this document:
"Hello all, our secret plan is finally complete! <private>We will

How to make custom TokenFilter?
In the O''reilly Ferret short cuts, I found very useful example for me.
It explains how to make custom Tokenizer.
But that book doesn''t explain how to make custom Filter.
(especially, how to implement the #text=() method)
I''m a newbee and I don''t understand how do I create my own custom
Filter.
Are there some good source code examples??

Parallel indexing doesn''t work?
Hi,
I''m trying to get parallelized ferret indexing working for my AAF
indices, based on the example in the O''Reilly Ferret shortcut.
However, the resulting indices after merging seem to have no actual
documents.
I went and made minimal changes to the example in the Ferret shortcut
pdf, and indeed can''t get that to work either. I''d appreciate any help

Ferret''s Memory usage when searching.
Hello,
We are experiencing some performance problems when using Ferret and we
are trying to isolate the problem.
We have about 80 GB in Indexes for one of our clients and when a
search is performed on those indexes the application gets really slow
and eventually it stops responding. We''ve been monitoring the memory
usage, and it rises very rapidly as the indexes are been loaded.

how to simply display the index
I''ve read the O''reilly short cut and I can''t figure out how to display
the index for testing purposes and view documents and fields.
Also, I''m planning on creating an index of www html documents. Is there
a preference between using the ferret file system and a mysql database?

undefined method `add'' for Ferret::Search::BooleanQuery
Up to now in my ferret development I have been using simple
single-word strings as my search queries. I just now am trying to
increase the complexity of my queries. When I was passing a single
word with no spaces in my index searches, like so:
count = index.search_each(''testing'') do |d, s|
...
end
everything worked fine. But now when I do something like this:
count =

Style guide when using "R" in a title
Hello,
I am working on a small booklet to be used with an existing statistics textbook. The purpose of the booklet is to give worked through examples from the textbook using R code and it will be made publicly available with the textbook. The title of the booklet is "R Code Supplement for Basic Engineering Data Collection and Analysis by Vardeman and Jobe". Someone with whom I'm

Possible bug when creating a Ferret::Search::Sort object?
I may have run across a bug in Ferret: if throws a segmentation fault
when I try to create a Sort object using the default fields (SCORE and
DOC_ID), but setting reverse to true.
Here''s the minimal example:
#!/usr/bin/env ruby
require ''rubygems''
require ''ferret''
Ferret::Search::Sort.new

Confused about Search Results
Hi everyone,
I''m pretty new to Lucene and Ferret, so I feel that this is most likely
myself not completely understanding the correct way to do this. I haved
indexed ~2200 text files (of various sizes), and I am now running
searches on the index to get a feel for Lucene and Ferret.
In my first program, which is using Lucene I search for ''influenza'' and
get the

Ferret seg-faulting during search
Hi,
I''m using ferret and running into troubles with it seg faulting during
searches. The index I''m searching is static and is only updated in an
offline way once every couple weeks.
The segfault isn''t deterministically reproducible, but if I hammer
ferret hard enough I can reliably get it to crash. The problem seems to
have something to do with how memory is shared

search speed eclipsed by retrieval speed
Hi all,
I''ve recently started working with Ferret and I''m getting what seems to
be slow searches. I have about 10000 documents in the index, with
several fields per document, with some fields having an array of several
values that are indexed.
I am using a RAMDirectory to store the index for searching. When doing
testing, I find that searches are reasonable at around .2 to

Well, I tend to disagree.
He did not say he'd want to use the R logo
and there is really nobody saying that "you should".
Using the letter 'R' as are regular word (noun) in a title is
perfectly fine.

Segmentation fault in Search::Searcher#highlight
I''m using ferret 0.10.14 in Linux Fedora 3.
When I do highlight with Index::Index#highlight, it works well.
But, doing the same test with Searcher#highlight,
[BUG] Segmentation fault occurred.
Here''s my test code.
require ''rubygems''
require ''ferret''
include Ferret::Search
#searcher = Ferret::Index::Index.new(:path =>
