Possible to dedpulicate read-only snapshots for space-efficient backups
Hey list,
I wonder if it is possible to deduplicate read-only snapshots.
Background:
I''m using an bash/rsync script[1] to backup my whole system on a nightly
basis to an attached USB3 drive into a scratch area, then take a snapshot of
this area. I''d like to have these snapshots immutable, so they should be
read-only.
Since rsync won''t discover moved files but

Many questions from a potential btrfs user
Hi.
I am seriously considering employing btrfs on my systems, particularly due
to some space-saving features that it has (namely, deduplication and
compression).
In fact, I was (a few moments ago) trying to back up some of my systems to a
2TB HD that has an ext4 filesystem and, in the middle of the last one, I got
the error message that the backup HD was full.
Given that what I backup there are

Deduplication
Hello,
some questions regarding btrfs deduplication.
- What is the state of it? Is it "safe" to use?
https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Deduplication does not yield
much information.
- https://pypi.python.org/pypi/bedup says: "bedup looks for new and
changed files, making sure that multiple copies of identical files
share space on disk. It integrates deeply with btrfs so

Dedup on read-only snapshots
According to https://github.com/g2p/bedup/tree/wip/dedup-syscall
"The clone call is considered a write operation and won''t work on
read-only snapshots."
Is this fixed on newer kernels?

Deduplication and block size
Nothing too interesting here, I was just playing around with the idea
of a deduplication allocator for nbdkit (“allocator=dedup”, see
https://rwmj.wordpress.com/2020/06/15/compressed-ram-disks/).
Before implementing such a thing I wanted to know if there's much
duplicated structure in a disk image. It seems to depend very
critically on the block size, but also there are no significant

SAMBA 48 - Dependencies Python27 vs python36
Hello Everyone,
Good morning/afternoon/evening.
Is there any chance to have SAMBA 48 working with Python36 and its
derivatives? ( py36-dnspython-1.15.0.txz. py36-iso8601-0.1.11.txz,
py36-ply-3.11.txz, py36-setuptools-40.6.2.txz)
Currently SAMBA 48 requires python 26, but that is conflicting with
existing packages in the server that is using py36.
Any way to work around that issue?

wine-1.3.19-x86_64 - needs /lib/ld-linux.so.2
I'm trying to get wine working on my slackware 13.37 64bit system.
I downloaded and installed the wine-1.3.19-x86_64-lsg.txz package.
That went fine and I can run /usr/bin/wine64 to confirm the version and stuff.
When I try to run or install any pc applications this is what I get:
Code:
bash-4.1$ wine64 asdf.exe
/lib/ld-linux.so.2: could not open
There is no /lib/ld-linux.so on my

the tag Obsoletes: in spec files
How exactly to use the tag "Obsoletes:" in a spec file ?
I need to offer texlive to users on Centos-5.6, so I packaged it (based
on a Mandriva src.rpm), and that works.
But I want rpm to *replace* tetex by texlive, instead of just adding
texlive, when users do a :
$ yum install texlive
(we have a local repo here).
So I added this line in texlive.spec :
Obsoletes: tetex
