USB Boot
I noticed that the Supermicro X9SCL has a USB type-a port right on the
motherboard.
http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C202_C204/X9SCL.cfm
Has anyone used a port like this to boot the core OS and used the
physical drives for OpenVZ and KVM containers? I figure a 64GB thumb
drive would work. Anyone done this or will a USB thumb drive not
stand up too the load? Seems much

Motherboard and chipset compatibility
So, having returned from a month's vacation, I'm back to work on attempting
to build a set of small form factor CentOS compatible computers. I've
really tried to do my homework, but this doesn't appear (at first glance)
to be at all easy. It's not made easier by the fact that I have to get it
right the first time (and I haven't built a PC in a decade); the time and
money

2.5" to 3.5" Conversion Tray
Anyone know of a 2.5" to 3.5" converter so I can put a 2.5 SSD drive
in a Supermicro 3.5 SATA hot swap bay? The one I purchased does not
seem to work.

CentOS on HP DL360e with B120i
I am trying to install CentOS5 on a new HP DL360e G8 with B120i disk
controller. It appears that a proprietary HP driver is needed for it.
I found a useful description at http://www.linuxhelp.in/2013/08/Installing-centos-on-HP-Proliant-DL360e-Gen8-with-B120i-controller.html
I have a pair of hard drives to use as a RAID1 mirror.
My question to people who may have been this way already is: is it

gigE -> 100Mb problems
I've got a pair of identical CentOS 6.7 servers, with SuperMicro X8DTE-F
motherboards, these have 2 each Intel 82574L ethernet ports. The eth0
ports are plugged in with 10' runs of brand new cat 5e cable to a Cisco
Nexxus 9000 switch (provided by the data center).
These servers keep coming up at 100baseT rather than gigE. I've swapped
ports and cables with a different server,

LSI MegaRAID experience...
Hey,
anyone using an LSI MegaRAID experienced "disappearing drives"...?
We installed 6 new C6 servers, each with a Supermicro SMC2108 (LSI MegaRAID) controllers and 3 PX-128M5Pro SSDs ( RAID1 + hostswap).
2 weeks (and almost no activity on it, since not in production, apart from installation) later, megacli sees (based on the slot numbers):
- on one server: only the 2nd disk of the RAID

IPMI ??
Never used IPMI in my life and while I thought it was cool when I heard
about it, had no plans to.
Just built a home server (while out of town) using a SUPERMICRO
MBD-X10SLM+-F-O
I put an nVidia 405 based video card in it but it may be bad.
When I power it on, I get some beeps but they are different than the no
memory beeps (I intentionally powered on w/o memory to hear those) and I
think

after they forced the cisco ports to gigE, I was seeing 200-400Mbps in

IPMI ??
Is there a little setup display right on the box? Just asking because I
have seen that on some boxes.
Cheers,
Boris.

Hardware raid LSI Megaraid not working since Centos 6.6
Happy new year !
We have a SuperMicro server with a LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i controller.
Since Centos 6.6 update (kernel 2.6.32-504), the controller doesn't
initialize at boot. Reverting to kernel 2.6.32-431 allows server to boot
fine.
The server can't boot due to a bug in LSI megaraid module. Boot log ends
by a lot of lines:
RESET_GEN2: retry=xxx, hostdiag=a4
I tried Centos 6.6

System started crashing hard after zpool reconfigure and OI upgrade
I have two identical Supermicro boxes with 32GB ram. Hardware details at
the end of the message.
They were running OI 151.a.5 for months. The zpool configuration was one
storage zpool with 3 vdevs of 8 disks in RAIDZ2.
The OI installation is absolutely clean. Just next-next-next until done.
All I do is configure the network after install. I don''t install or enable
any other services.

TPM and secure boot
has anyone implemented any sort of 'secure boot' using TPM 1.2 modules
on the server boards using CentOS 6.x ? I'm not finding much concrete
stuff on how to setup and manage a system like this, but I've been asked
to research it for a security application internally at my job.
our primary application for the TPM is for client authentication
certificates in an SSL application

IPMI Console: No luck once OS is booted
I have a current RELENG_7 running on:
http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/4U/7045/SYS-7045B-TR+.cfm
with the -3+ IPMI card.
I can interact with the BIOS, etc, but no joy once we get past the loader.
Anyone have ideas?
Attached is the kernel config, and the /var/run/dmesg.boot file.

IPMI serial console
Hi all,
A recent thread inspired me to try getting a proper serial console working on a Supermicro X9SCL motherboard with IPMI.
However I find that while I see loader messages and the getty I enabled after boot I don't get any kernel messages which does somewhat limit the utility..
The BMC creates COM3 (/dev/cuau2) which works with getty. I modified /boot/loader.conf like so..

help configuring netboot over remote serial terminal
Hi Folks,
I'm trying to install Debian onto a headless server (Supermicro
X8SIE-LN4F motherboard). The on-board IPMI BMC redirects the serial
port to COM3, and I can talk to it just fine over a remote console
connection.
I've been trying to install Debian remotely, and have the DHCP and TFTP
servers working, and things seem to work (at least into the Splash
screen) if I'm using
