Advice on CentOS 7, software raid 1, lvm, 3 TB disks
Greetings - I am preparing to order a new desktop system for work. In general the new system will be a Dell Precision T3610 with two 3 TB drives. I plan on installing CentOS 7 as a KVM host, with virtual machines for Win 7 Pro and Linux Mint. I am looking for some advice or a good how-to on configuring software raid on the two drives, then using LVM for the host and virtual machines. I

Slightly OT: First Time KVM and LVM on Centos
Greetings - I am a novice system administrator and will soon be purchasing a new server to replacing an aging file server for my company. I am considering setting up the new server as a KVM host with two guests; one guest as the Samba file server and a second guest as a testing area. My old server was set up about 7 years ago and has a 5 disk raid 5 configuration without LVM. I understand

CentOS 7 install software Raid on large drives error
Greetings - I am trying to install CentOS 7 into a new Dell Precision 3610. I have two 3 TB drives that I want to setup in software RAID1. I followed the guide here for my install as it looked fairly detailed and complete (http://www.ictdude.com/howto/install-centos-7-software-raid-lvm/). I only changed the size of the partitions from what is described, but ended up with the disk

Dual boot Win98 Centos sharing files
Greetings - I have searched the mailing list archives and my Samba 3 book and have not seen this issue addressed anywhere. My home desktop box has Win98 installed on a 20 GB drive and Centos 4.4 on a 160 GB drive with a Grub menu for selecting which OS to boot. I am wondering if it is theoretically possible to share (read and write) files on the Linux drive when booted to Window, and vice

Disaster recovery option for file server
Greetings - I have not been a long time follower of this list, but I have scanned through the last year or so of archives, after not finding much from google searches. I am hoping someone here can inform me if what I want to do is feasible, and give me some general guidance to follow so that I can continue my research and complete this task. I admin a RH3 system that is primarily a Samba

Rsync (cwrsync) log file
Greetings - There is probably a simple answer to this, but I can't seem to figure it out. I would like to have a clean log file of each rsync operation; in other words I don't want to have rsync append to the existing log file, but instead create a new one each time after deleting the old one. My situation is this; I run rsync from a shell script on my Linux server which backs up

Selecting raw logical volumes during guest VM creation
Greetings - I have stepped through the first guest OS installation (a testing VM) on my new server and have a technical question that I hope someone might be able to help me with. I have exhausted my google search ability and have not been able to find the details I am looking for. In general the question I am trying to answer is how to select and use multiple raw logical volumes when

How can I prevent deleting of primary directory while allowing full privileges to subdirectories
Greetings - In general terms I would like to prevent users from deleting or moving a primary directory within a share, but allow users to create / delete / move subdirectories and files that reside under these directories. My reason for needing this type of setup is to prevent an accidental deletion of a common directory and to maintain a planned directory structure at the top level of the

Logging denied connections from outside LAN
Greetings - I have an interesting issue that I am trying to understand. This may not be a direct Samba related issue, but the results of the issue are showing up in the Samba log, so I thought I would start here. Please direct me elsewhere if there is a better forum for this question. I have spent some time Googling and have a small understanding of what is going on, but now my Google-fu

Confusion over steps to add new logical volume to guest VM
Greetings - I am hoping someone can confirm for me the steps that I am using to add an LV to an existing Guest in KVM, and what I am seeing as I do some of these steps. My host (earth) is CentOS 6 and so is my guest (disect). The guest (disect) is my testing server. The main objective of what I am trying to do is add a logical volume for /var into my guest. The LV (lv_disectvar) is part

ABRT interpretation / guidance needed
Greetings - I have a Centos 6 box fully updated that intermittently sends me an "[abrt] full crash report" email. I am not familiar with these at all and in my limited google search have not found good information to interpret this information. The most recent (and the most frequent one) is listed below, also I have listed the lines from /var/log/messages that correspond to

Resize guest filesystem question

I spent the afternoon yesterday googling for answers, but had have come up blank still. CentOS 7 grub.cfg missing on new install
Greetings - The short story is that got my new install completed with the partitioning I wanted and using software raid, but after a reboot I ended up with a grub prompt, and do not appear to have a grub.cfg file. So here is a little history of how I got here, because I know in order for anyone to help me they would subsequently ask for this information. So this post is a little long, but

Incoming rsync connection attempts
Greetings - In my logwatch report this morning I noticed reference to an attempt to connect to rsync from an external IP address. It doesn't appear that the connection was successful based on correlating information between /var/log/secure and /var/log/messages. But I am looking for some suggestions for implementing more preventative measures, if necessary. The log information from

[Advice] CentOS6 + KVM + bonding + bridging
With the current talk on bonding, I have a few questions of my own. I'm setting up a KVM host with CentOS 6.3 x86_64 on which I'd like to attach the VMs to a bonded interface. My target setup is one where two GigE NICs are bonded and then the KVM bridge interface is attached to the bonded interface. Initially I tried to use the balance-alb mode (mode6), but had little luck (receiving
