using Linux as a NAS / SAN device
Hi, I'm looking at using Linux as a NAS / SAN device, and would like some input from other's who have done this before? How would it compare to commercial SAN devices, Thecus N8800SAS (http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=11&pid=177&set_language=english) or something similar to these? I would probably use hardware RAID 10, and could go with either SAS / SATA, and then

CentOS 5.4 off-center on SuperMicro console
I have a weird situation with a new installation of CentOS 5.4 x64, on a SuperMicro X7SBI server. Xen C6 kernel 4.9.13 and testing 4.9.15 only reboots.
Good news/bad news testing the new kernel on CentOS7 with my now notoriously finicky machines: Good news: 4.9.23-26.el7 (grabbed today via yum update) isn't any worse than 4.9.13-22 was on my xen hosts (as far as I can tell so far at least) Bad news: It isn't any better than 4.9.13 was for me either, if I don't set vcpu limit in the grub/xen config, it still panics like so: [

[OT] Network Attached Storage
Hello, Been thinking about either purchasing one of these or building my own. This will be for home use. I was looking at the QNAP 451+ or building (DYI NAS) one with FreeNAS. I also found that CentOS has a NAS project. Not sure which way to go. They would cost about the same. One would be proprietary and the other open source. I like open source. This for home use. Thought I'd start out

IPMI serial console
Hi all, A recent thread inspired me to try getting a proper serial console working on a Supermicro X9SCL motherboard with IPMI. However I find that while I see loader messages and the getty I enabled after boot I don't get any kernel messages which does somewhat limit the utility.. The BMC creates COM3 (/dev/cuau2) which works with getty. I modified /boot/loader.conf like so..

CentOS 5.5 does not recognise SAS drives with LSI 1068E Controller
I need to do a new CentOS net install on a new server having the Supermicro X7DVL-3 motherboard: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/xeon1333/5000V/X7DVL-3.cfm Based on that info I assume the board having a "8x SAS Ports via LSI 1068E Controller". We received the server with 3 drives + 1 spare as hw RAID-5 preinstalled. During bootup I see that the drives are initialised

Motherboard and chipset compatibility
So, having returned from a month's vacation, I'm back to work on attempting to build a set of small form factor CentOS compatible computers. I've really tried to do my homework, but this doesn't appear (at first glance) to be at all easy. It's not made easier by the fact that I have to get it right the first time (and I haven't built a PC in a decade); the time and money

Offtopic: Which SAS / SATA HBA do you recommend?
Hi all, Sorry for the offtopic question. I hope though that others on this list or reading the archive find the answers useful too. It seems the Adaptec 1405 4port SAS HBA I bought only works with RHEL and SuSE through a closed source driver, and thus is quite useless :-( I was stupid enought to think "Works with RHEL and SuSE" meant "Certified for RHEL and SuSE, but driver in

Building a Back Blaze style POD
Hi All, I am about to embark on a project that deals with allowing information archival, over time and seeing change over time as well. I can explain it a lot better, but I would certainly talk your ear off. I really don't have a lot of money to throw at the initial concept, but I have some. This device will host all of the operations for the first few months until I can afford to build a

ibm m1015 w/sandy bridge boot failure
I have a server running CentOS 6.0. Last night I replaced the CPU and motherboard. Old hardware: Supermicro x8sil-f + x3440. New hardware: Supermicro x9scl+-f + E3-1230. This is a new Sandy Bridge Xeon. Everything else remained the same, including an IBM m1015 SAS HBA. This is just an IBM re-branded LSI 92xx-8i (9220-8i specifically I believe), which uses the LSI SAS2008 chipset and the

Windows Guest on KVM running "single core" after windows update
Hey all, I have a Windows 10 pro (64bit) long time running as a libvirt/KVM guest that I think Windows Update finally narfed. The hardware is a supermicro motherboard with dual Intel E5-2640 CPUs for a total of 40 threads and 64GB The guest is allocated 2sockets, 5cores, 2 threads and 32GB of RAM. (I've also tried 1 socket, 20 cores, 1 thread and 1s10c2t -- no help) In an SSH session to
