How does Live CD find OS's?
If I boot into CentOS on my home server from a Live CD or USB stick
and go to Troubleshoot, it lists OS's it finds on the machine.
How does it find these OS's?
Presumably it looks through all the partitions on all the hard disks
for something that looks like an OS?
But how exactly does it identify an OS?

CentOS-7 on a USB stick
I tried dd-ing the ISO onto a USB stick, as suggested in
<http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS7>,
but it didn't boot.
Did anyone have better luck with this?
In any case, I got it working by running livecd-iso-to-disk
on a Fedora-20 laptop.
I've found before that this is the best program around
for the purpose.
But I've 2 queries about this:
1. Why isn't this

spamassassin with postfix/dovecot
I'm trying to install spamassassin on a postfix/dovecot server,
running CentOS-6.4, following the instructions at
<http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd>.
I think I have taken all the steps indicated,
and the configuration seems to pass the tests suggested,
although the response is much more sparse than that described:

NM on a server?
Is there any point in running NetworkManager on a server?
The IP addresses of the two server NICS are fixed
(192.168.1.2 and 192.168.2.2 .)
I'm not clear if it is necessary in some way
to run NM on a CentOS system?

CentOS-6.5 rescue disk?
Is there such a thing as a CentOS rescue disk?
Google gives many links to such a thing,
but when I pursue them I do not get to an URL
where I can actually download one.

CentOS-5.5 Live CD & netinstall
According to <http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSLiveCD5.5>
"There is a "Network Install" option on the Live CD
that is the same as our CentOS-5.5-i386-netinstall ISO".
I've looked quite carefully at my CentOS-5.5 Live CD (on a USB stick),
and I don't see a Network Install option anywhere.
Could some kind soul explain where it can be found,

Booting back into CentOS-6
This, IMHO, is one of the more annoying bugs with the newer GRUB (which i assume is the bootloader you are using). Specifically the newer grub can't, won't boot from a drive other than the one grub is on. suggest you revert to grub 0.97 or, if any boot loader is or can be put on the drive with the 6.5 distro you can make that drive the boot drive in the bios, which is how i do it. i.e.

It comes with the libnice package in Fedora-11.

ipmi_si error on booting
I'm getting the (unintelligible to me) error message
ipmi_si: Could not set up I/O space
ERST: Failed to get Error Log Address Range
when I try to boot any OS on the grub menu
apart from the one I last installed.
(Actually, Windows also boots properly.)
I wonder if anyone has had this error message,
and worked out where it comes from?
I googled for it, and it has come up many times;

CentOS-6 by PXEboot?
Has anyone succeeded in installing CentOS-6.0 by PXEboot.
If so, would you say how you did it, please.
I tried (on an HP MicroServer),
but gave up in the end and used a USB stick installation instead.
But I'd be very interested to know how to do it, for the future.
Unfortunately I didn't keep a proper note of my PXEboot attempt,
but IIRC the problem was that install.img was not found,

postfix + amavisd-new
I've been following the instrunctions in
<http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd>
for installing Amavisd, Clamav and SpamAssassin
on top of postfix/dovecot .
Dovecot is working fine,
but I want to deal with spam email.
(I am using sendmail/dovecot with procmail and spamassassin
on another server, but decided to go over to postfix
on this server when I saw it is now the CentOS default.)

Radeon driver under CentOS-6
I wonder if anyone has CentOS-6 working on an HP MicroServer?
I'm having a problem with the graphics driver
for the Radeon HD 4200 graphics card.
CentOS-5.6 is working fine on this machine;
but at present I only have CentOS-6 running in text mode.
The graphics card as given by "/sbin/lspci -m" is

Who deletes/edits my resolv.com ?
Every now and again the nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf
on my CentOS-6.5 server are commented out.
I used to think this was the fault of NetworkManager,
but I've stopped running that on the server
(using the network service instead)
and the nameserver removal still occurs.
I'm baffled by the motivation for this,
as I can't think of any situation
where it would be of advantage to have

Samba/BackupPC under CentOS-5.3
I'm almost completely ignorant about samba on Windows machines,
In particular I know nothing about Windows permissions,
if that is relevant here.
I am running BackupPC on a CentOS-5.3 machine.
It works perfectly for backing up Linux folders,
but I have great difficulty extending it to Windows clients.
To be precise, I have a share called "EA Games D"
on a machine running Windows XP

My new server
I bought a very cheap server yesterday -
an HP ProLiant micro server for 160 euro
(280 euro with 120 cashback, for some reason).
But I was surprised when I opened the box
to find it didn't come with keyboard or mouse,
and doesn't have the old keyboard/mouse sockets,
but requires USB versions.
Is that the norm nowadays?
Is it possible to convert the old keyboard/mouse plugs?
Also there is

Installing CentOS-7 but keeping CentOS-6.5
I'm having trouble installing CentOS-7 on my HP MicroServer.
I've tried with KDE LiveCD and Netinstall (both on USB sticks),
and now I'm going to try with the DVD ISO.
But I want to be quite sure I can return to CentOS-6.5
if things go wrong, so I'm wondering what precisely I need to copy
(eg the MBR and a bit more) so that I could get back to things as they were.
Is this

This is probably a very ignorant question,

Samsung CLP-325W network connection?
Anyone got this working over a LAN under CentOS?
The instructions claim it is easy to connect
after pressing the WPS button on printer and router.
Sadly, I don't see a WPS button on my Linksys WRT54GL router.
When I press the WPS button on the printer
the WiFi icon flashes,
but I don't see any attempt to connect in /var/log/messages
on my CentOS-5.5 server.
Any advice or suggestions
