Slow login to system without internet connection
Hi. For a long time I am puzzled why, when internet connection is gone (beyond first router, outside of subnet) SSH (and telnet?) connection is drastically slowed. Same behavior, but less impacted is observed when system boots without working internet connection, and I am not sure, but I think even access to SAMBA fileshares can be/is affected. Affected systems are mostly production

Help with VMware ESXi manager for CentOS - newbie level
Hi. On my new job we use VMware ESXi (Free version), but my colleagues use Windows on their PC's. I am allowed to use CentOS Linux, but I have no prior experience with WMVare. I now (today) have to install CentOS 6.x minimal on that ESXi server, so I am trying to wrap my head around whole ecosystem. What should I install on my CentOS 6.x so I can access/manage ESXi server and manage

MySQL Can't create file '/tmp/#sql2e0_98_0.frm' (errno: 9) problem
Hi. I have a strange problem. I installed cacti, and set it up. When I click on the Plugins Management, I noticed Error "FATAL: Database or Table does not exist" Further testing revealed that at the moment MySQL can not create temporary files in /tmp. It is same for ANY database! SELinux is disabled. I logged to mysql as root and error is same. Command used is: CREATE TEMPORARY

defer (not skip) boot fsck?
I have some large filesystems that are only used for rarely used archived data. Is there any way to specify in fstab or elsewhere that if these have passed their 'time to run fsck' that it could be put in the background and the system could go ahead and boot, mounting them whenever the operation finishes? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

Autofs - can you mount only certain home dirs?
Does autofs take completed control of directories mentioned in auto.master? The examples with /home show that you can specify individual users instead of * and &, but even then it seems to take over the whole /home level so you can't see or add local subdirs. I have a small group of users/hosts where I would like to at least temporarily mix/match who is automounted or not. -- Les

google chrome future / centos 7
I'm seeing the following banner when I start up google-chrome 48-beta (48.0.2564.48 beta (64-bit)) on my 7.2 machines: This computer will soon stop receiving Google Chrome updates because this Linux system will no longer be supported. Does this portend a support issue for chrome on centos-7 in a few months when the underlying changes make their way into their -stable (since, as I

How to preserve iptables when running the GUI tool ?
Hello I have set up NAT with iptables for an openvpn connection, so that the VPN server could give VPN clients access to the entire sub-net of the server. The probelm is if I start system-config-securitylevel to say disable the firewall, and then again to enable it, my iptable rules are gone ! I did run `service iptables save` before. Is there something I can do to prevent this ? Is there a

Eeek, my centos6 box won't boot after broken update, need help w/ yum
Hello there, I think I've shutdown my box right in the middle of a yum update.. The latest kernel installed won't simple boot, and the old one can, but only in init 3 mode (tty). From a console, I wanted to complete the yum update and it suggested me to do a `yum-complete-transaction`. yum-complete-transaction tells me that 447 elements are left to run in 1 transaction, runs and show

CentOS 8 apcupsd or nut and duplicity
Hello Again, Is there any update on nut or apcupsd for CentOS 8? Also, I noticed that duplicity is not currently available for CentOS 8. I got the Fedora 30 SRPM for duplicity to build on CentOS, but ran into a dependency issue and cannot find python-devel. Any suggestions on alternatives or how to get duplicity going on CentOS 8? CentOS clone is dead and will be now replaced with no-cost RHEL, so in market share (over time) CentOS will be replaced with RHEL. Does Centos repo's hold these drivers or do I download after the install please? TiA -- Dave
