R 3.1.2 for Debian jessie/testing available on CRAN
Thanks Johannes to clarify this point. It makes more sense to me now. So I
understand that the idea is to make it simpler without apt-pinning for less
adventurous people (I mean normal people :)): just add jessie-cran3 repo
and you're good to go.
Am I also correct that jessie-cran3 is essentially a backport of Debian
SID, with some (short?) delay? In other words, modulo a couple of days,

R 3.1.2 for Debian jessie/testing available on CRAN
Dear Johannes,
Thanks a lot for this work! I have to admit that I'm now a little bit
puzzled, though. I'm running Debian Jessie (current testing) with great
satisfaction. When it comes to R, I simply have the SID repository
(official Debian) enabled, with some pining to get only R-related stuff.
Now, I'm not sure to understand the benefit of using the CRAN repository
for Jessie?I

How to use rainbow function without the gamma argument
Hi,
I am using a old code (probably written for R 2.5) and it stops when
calling rainbow() with gamma argument. I saw that gamma argument is not
present in newer version of R rainbow function. How can I translate this
line of code:
rainbow(100, s = 1.0, v = 0.75, start = 0.0, end = 0.75, gamma = 1.5)
?
It fails with:
Error in rainbow(100, s = 1, v = 0.75, start = 0, end = 0.75, gamma = 1.5)

Debian Testing: ~/.Renviron seems to not being read (R_LIBS not set)
Hi,
I have Debian Testing running on a Lenovo Thinkpad X1
Carbon (2015, 3rd gen.). I would like to have a package library
independent of the installed R version. Under Ubuntu, I used to
have the following line in ~/.Renviron:
R_LIBS=/usr/local/R/library:/usr/lib/R/site-library This worked
fine and /usr/local/R/library showed up in .libPaths().
However, under Debian (with the same ~/.Renviron),

running unit tests on the stringr package
I am trying to learn how to run the unit tests in the stringr package
and have the following questions.
1) The r-cran-stringr package does not suggest/depend on the
r-cran-testthat package . Would it make sense to add such a thing
since after all the tests in /usr/lib/R/site-library/stringr/tests
rely on testthat package?
2) I am getting the following error when trying to run the unit tests

segfault and RunSnowWorker: not found
Hi,
While I suspect that this is an issue peculiar to my machine (Debian squeeze amd64, R version 3.0.1, up-to-date packages), I'm hoping that somebody on this list may be able to give me suggestions on how to troubleshoot and fix the following:

Debian Testing: ~/.Renviron seems to not being read (R_LIBS not set)
Dear Johannes, Dear Dirk,
Thanks a lot for helping. Here is the missing information.
Here is how I installed R. This is basically how Martin Maechler
showed me to install R under Ubuntu (in several versions so that they
are also recognized by ESS). My goal is to adjust this to make it work
for Debian:
1) sudo emacs /etc/apt/sources.list # then add:

Outdated r-base-core when installing on Ubuntu 14.04
Ok, first I poked around the ubuntu tablet and related PPAs to see if I
could find one with an ARM port of R, but no luck. Next I tried a debian
install - jessie is supported on Crouton and it installs and runs basically
without a hitch. But I run into the same problem installing R - using only
a cran debian source and none of Rutter's PPAs. Now r-base-core is only
available up to 3.1.1-1.

Debian Testing: ~/.Renviron seems to not being read (R_LIBS not set)
Dear Dirk, Dear Johannes,
Thanks for helping, I could solve the problem.
By reading your posts, I got a bit of the impression that questions
beyond the 'standard installation' process are not really welcome on
R-SIG-Debian. If this is the case, I'm sorry for my post. I wasn't
aware of this, but Dirk makes it clear why on
