ssh-askpass should be able to distinguish between a prompt for confirmation and a prompt for an actual passphrase
I just opened a bug report about this, but i thought i'd bring it to the
group if anyone has any concerns about the idea:
https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1871
currently, ssh-askpass is used in some situations to actually ask the
user for a passphrase.
in other situations, it is used to prompt for simple confirmation (e.g.
ControlMaster=ask, ssh-add -c).

help wanted: update ssh-askpass programs for new U2F / prompt hints
Hi,
When we added U2F support, we also extended the interface used by ssh
and ssh-agent to invoke the $SSH_ASKPASS program.
Originally, the askpass prompt was used to obtain passphrases for ssh in
cases where it was not possible to read them from the terminal. Later
it was (ab)used for showing confirmation prompts for each use of any
key that was added to the agent using "ssh-add -c".

help wanted: update ssh-askpass programs for new U2F / prompt hints
My website has fallen off the web. This is a good time for someone else to take over the code for x11-ssh-askpass, as I've not done anything with it for years. I have the original code somewhere if needed, but I think Debian has mirrored it for some time.

making the passphrase prompt more clear
I am going to preface this email by saying that I know very little
about OpenSSH internals, the protocol, etc.
I do a lot of work with novice programmers, and one step that comes up
relatively early is generating SSH keys. In case you haven't done it
in a while, the output looks like this:
$ ssh-keygen -t rsa
Generating public/private rsa key pair.
Enter file in which to save the key

Fwd: making the passphrase prompt more clear
This got me thinking, shouldn't this go through PAM so that password
strength restrictions can be set as well? Obviously most ssh keys are
created locally. But, if this were implemented, I think most distros
would adopt the same strength criteria on this as they do with passwd
and the like.

displaying identity key comment string in passphrase prompt
A Feature Request for OpenSSH 3.x:
In version 2.x, when prompting for the passphrase ssh would print
a prompt including the comment string from an RSA key, like:
Enter passphrase for RSA key 'Your Dog's Name':
The comment string was a useful way to remind the user what the
passphrase was (i didn't use hints quite this easy :-).
In Openssh 3.0, ssh prompts using the filename:

trying to debug ssh-askpass problem
Hi all,
I have a script which calls ssh-add at a certain point, and I'm
getting the following error:
ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/bin/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory
I don't see why it's doing this, since SSH_ASKPASS isn't set, and
there should be a working terminal:
SSH_ASKPASS
If ssh needs a passphrase, it will read the passphrase from the

2.2.0p1 PATCH: ssh/scp/slogin will invoke ssh-askpass
Enclosed is a patch against 2.2.0p1 that teaches ssh (and therefore
slogin and scp) how to invoke ssh-askpass to request a password,
RSA/DSA key passphrase, or an skey challenge response.
I've tested this on Linux (i386), for passwords and RSA/DSA key
passphrases. I cannot easily test whether the Right Thing will happen
for skey challenge responses; I would appreciate it if someone who

SSH-askpass - timeout possible?
Hello,
On my home PC, whch runs openssh with Jim Knoble's x11-ssh-askpass, I have
configured my Bash shell login script to prompt me for the passphrase. No
problem, however it waits during the login process for me to 'do something'
- i.e. enter a passphrase, cancel it or whatever. Is it possible to set a
timeout so that if, say, nothing occurs within a minute then it assumes no

[PATCH] one-time ssh-agent confirmation password
The patch (against 4.7p1) modifies gnome-ssh-askpass to optionally
generate a one-time
password and transmits it to the user via an out-of-band communication
channel. If you can
read the password and enter it back into the gnome-ssh-askpass dialog,
ssh-agent is allowed
to continue with the authentication process.
There are two ways to use the modified gnome-ssh-askpass. The first

What component is actually calling ssh-askpass?

2.9p1 ssh-add/ssh-askpass first try fails
OpenSSH Version 2.9p1 of "ssh-add $HOME/.ssh/id_rsa < /dev/null"
fails on the first try of using ssh-askpass before the window manager
starts. The second try works. The error message on the first try is
"Bad passphrase, try again".
This did not occur using OpenSSH-2.5.2p2.tar.gz. I've tested this
on both RHL6.2 and RHL7.1, both with all RH rpm updates applied.
