Security advice, please
I run chkrootkit daily. For the first time I've got reports of a problem -
Checking `bindshell'... INFECTED (PORTS: 1008)
The page http://fatpenguinblog.com/scott-rippee/checking-bindshell-infected-
ports-1008/ suggests that this might be a false positive, so I ran 'netstat -
tanup' but unlike the report, it wasn't famd on the port. It was

Steroids for Rsync!
I've been researching the state of 'file alteration monitoring'
technology on Linux. Famd uses dnotify to inefficently monitor a handful
of directories. The replacement for dnotify is being worked on in the
kenel and it's called inotify. If I understand it correctly and they get
it finished, it would be an awesome addition to rsync. With it, you
could run rsync to update a

75 seconds timeout when negotiating with smbd.
Hello all,
After upgrading to 3.0.23c on my FreeBSD 6.1 box Samba stopped working
on any connections. When connecting to smbd, tcp session is established
(SYN, SYN+ACK, ACK) then a client send a NEGOTIATION packet, and after
some timeout (about 10-15 seconds) this tcp session is closed (by the
client) because no response to NEG. packet was received. Then after 75
seconds (counting from the

DOS clients problem with 3.6.22 vs 3.6.18
I have tried to upgrade our samba server from 3.6.18 to 3.6.22 but found
that our DOS clients could no longer connect (using DOS 6.22 and
Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1).
With 3.6.18 we use smb.conf setting 'min protocol = LANMAN2' and it
works great, with 3.6.22 although clients can connect ok, they cannot
obtain a directory listing. Instead the first file (sometimes misnamed)

Samba 3.6.22 corrupting filesystem on AIX
Hi,
I have compiled then installed Samba 3.6.22 on my AIX 5.2.
When I start SMBD it systematicaly corrupts the filesystem on which it
is installed and fails to start
I start SMBD on an other port because an old samba (2.2.8) is already
running and I have to validate 3.6.22 before shuting down the old one.
You'll see more informations bellow :
- smbd output

LLD: Using sendfile(2) to copy file contents
As to leave an opportunity for the kernel, I think mmap+write would be
enough. Because the kernel knows what address is mmap'ed, it can detect
that write's source is actually a mmap'ed file and if that's the case it
can optimize as it does for sendfile. It seems that Linux doesn't do that
now, though.
I haven't thought about using non-temporal stores. It may work as we

Question on how to get Samba to use larger pread/write calls.
We are testing Samba 3 (and 4) on Fedora Core 13,
10Gbit connection with a Mac OS 10.6.4 system
as the client. We will be adding some Windows
machines sooner or later with 10Gbit interfaces.
We are seeing 100-150MBytes/sec read or write
performance between the Mac and the FC13 system
over 10Gbit interface but it should be capable of
400-500MBytes/sec. We have a local raid

Printing to Samba 2.0.7 from Windows 2000
Hi,
I've recently installed LPRng 3.6.22, ifhp 3.3.19, and
Samba 2.0.7 on my FreeBSD 4.1 system. Printing works
fine from the FreeBSD machine, and I am able to access
shares via my Win2000 machine. I've configured a
[printers] section in smb.conf, and I am able to see
the LaserJet 2100 when browsing, but on installing it
I am unable to print to it. I get en error connecting

subversion 1.6.9 and sqlite 3.6.22
I'm in the process of setting up subversion and since the version
packages with C5 is, shall we say, showing its age, I've built an
updated version. In order to do that I had to upgrade sqlite from the
default 3.3.6 (which the current subversion will not build with) and I
went with 3.6.22. Has anyone else had any experience with whether or not
that breaks anything?

Permission denied but ok?...
Was just browsing web and tried to save some files on a samba share
and got:
permission denied 3 times in a row... (and now on 4th try, it worked).
The log for the past hour looks a bit odd... why so many module reloads?
wouldn't they load once?
Also I've never seen the "New VC == 0, if NT4.x compatible we would
close all old resources."
Why would I get so many session

"net getdomainsid" reporting "Could not fetch local SID" -- am I using this command appropriately?
Good evening,
Distro: ClearOS 6.3 (RHEL-derived with a distro-specific web
configuration tool for samba) I'm only about 90% sure it's version
6.3.
Samba version: 3.6.10-1.v6
Intended use: NT4-style PDC for Windows XP clients
Issue:
My distro's "add machine script" uses the output of "net getdomainsid"
to help populate the new machine account's sambaSID field

ntlmssp_server_postauth: invalid NTLMSSP_MIC on CTDB fileserver (NT-style domain)
Hi List,
As the subject states, I'm running a CTDB cluster. Samba is Sernet 4.4.5
in an NT-Style Samba domain (DCs are Centos 6 packaged samba, 3.6.22)
Every so often, users are unable to connect to network shares. Most of
the problems seem to happen on Windows 7 domain members, but smbclient
will also fail to connect. I see these lines in the logs for every
attempted connection:
