Standalone Update 4.8.5 -> 4.9.2 smb fails to start ERROR: failed to setup guest info.
Samba Devs,
Very strange error - smb fails to start on Archlinux after upgrade from
4.8.5 -> 4.9.2 on a simple standalone server. This server has run for years
just fine through all upgrades, but on this one, smb cannot start:

What in samba 4.1 prevents a '/' share?
All,
If the post "Samba 3.6 -> 4.1 change that prevent sharing / - mount error(13)"
makes it to the list, I apologize, but it has been over a day and I have no
indication that the post ever made it to the list.
The issue is that in versions prior to 4.x, I was able to create a root share
in samba, but now, something prevents it from being mounted. The relevant
smb.conf is:

upgrade 4.4 -> 4.5 broke standalone server smbmount of drives?
All,
I've run samba in standalone mode since the 2.0.7 days and have been though a
few breakages due to version updates along the way. It seems we have hit one
again in the 4.4 to 4.5 update. Specifically, the update was
samba-4.4.5 => samba-4.5.0
There were no changes made to smb.conf, but the following attempted mount
failed using:
mount.cifs //phoinix/samba /mnt/phx -o

kernel update to 3.12.5-1, now: upsd[617]: getaddrinfo: Servname not supported for ai_socktype
Charles, All,
I just updated the kernel on my Arch box (the one we have been working on nut
with on this list). Now upsd fails to start. (upsdrvctl is fine). I've posted
working then -- Reboot -- the failing log information below. The 'Reboot' was
for the kernel upgrade:

Nut (git) upsdrvctl fails without "-u root start <upsname>", upsd fails on state file GID
All,
I have built and installed nut from git on Archlinux. It uses the usbhid
driver. Beginning a couple of years ago, nut begin failing to run on Archlinux
without 'tweaking' or 'fudging' the install. There are two primary problems:
(1) upsdrvctl cannot be launched normally i.e. (/usr/sbin/upsdrvctl start)
without failing to connect:

smbd and winbindd refuse to start, but nmbd runs fine on Redhat 9.0
Hi, I downloaded the binaries for samba yesterday for redhat 9.0, and
installed them without error. Managed to get swat up and running and
configured samba, the same way I configured my other linux (slackware
10.2) box, and started samba thru swat. But when the status page
reloads, it shows smbd and winbindd as not running, although it shows
nmbd running. When i check the ps list, it shows

smbcontrol smbd ping also answered by nmbd and winbindd
Hello,
with samba-3.0.x an "smbcontrol smbd ping" was answered by all running
smbd processes. With samba-3.2.x it is now *also* answered by nmbd and
winbindd:
[root@cs00 ~]# smbcontrol -V

[root@cs00 ~]# for i in `smbcontrol -t 1 winbindd ping | grep PONG | awk

Yes there was a ':' there all right. Seems I was hit by a vi error:

Samba4 joining a domain as DC
I followed
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba4/HOWTO/Join_a_domain_as_a_DC
but when I get to
samba-tool drs kcc -Uadministrator windowsdc.samba.example.com
then the result is:
ERROR(runtime): DsExecuteKCC failed - (8409, ?WERR_DS_DATABASE_ERROR?)
and in samba.log:

samba version 4.0.0alpha17 started.

Samba-4.10.13 IPv6 turn it off
I am working on a FreeBSD jail (12.1p4) using samba410. I have joined this
service to our existing Samab DC DOMAIN using samba-tool domain join. This
worked as far as I can tell.
I have these entries in smb4.conf

netbios name = SAMBA-02
realm = BROCKLEY-2016.HARTE-LYNE.CA

Troubles upgrading jailed DC from 4.8.7 to 4.8.9
Hello.
On several FreeBSD 11.2/amd64 servers, I've got a jail dedicated to
running Samba as an AD DC.
Some days ago I upgraded one of them from 4.8.7 to 4.8.9 and suddenly
everything stopped working.
Since it was a production box, I immediately restored the whole jail
from a backup, with no chance to better investigate.
Today, with more time, I tried on another server and again I run
