IMAP to Maildir Migration preserving UIDs?
Hello all,
I'm facing the need to migrate from a proprietary IMAP server to
Dovecot. The migration must be as smooth and transparent as possible.
The mailbox format I would want to use is Maildir++.
The storage format used by the current server is unknown, and I don't
look forward to trying to reverse-engineer it. This leaves me with the
option of reading the mailboxes using IMAP.

Current thinking on backups ?
I run a pair of dovecot servers for personal small domains with several
layers of backup in place ...
- The two dovecot servers replicate to each via a Tinc vpn mesh. That
gives email resiliency.
- All mail is replicated via offlineimap to a 3rd server over that Tinc
vpn. It's on the mesh, it has space, so why not ?
- All mail is replicated as well as via mbsync to a zfs dataset on my

Problems Converting from Cyrus to Dovecot (cyrus2dovecot)
Hello,
Because it did not work ?
In a similar situation, we where forced to use isync/mbsync in imap to
imap mode because dsync did not work.
It was reported here more than a year ago (May 2014).
Time to time, I see the same report from other trying to use dsync to do
a migration to dovecot.
Dsync is a very appealing and elegant solution to this usage, but it
does not always work in real

Problems Converting from Cyrus to Dovecot (cyrus2dovecot)
Hi,
No, I tried fetching over imapc too exactly as you suggested.
In my case it was not from cyrus, but from CriticalPath.
isync was finally able to do the job, preserving flags and doing UIDs
mapping. The most boring part was generating proper config file for
thousands of accounts.
A working imapc/dsync would have been better.
Emmanuel.

Thank you for the reply. I did find imapsync whilst perusing Google. I
will give it a shot, it sounds more realistic/reliable. I have a hoard
of emails going back to 1999, so I want as few errors as possible :)

How to backup maildir
Hello Robert,
[... snip ...]
of course I'm totally with you: asking other people for help, is often
a good - if even not the only way to getting things done. It was not
my intention to insult you! I hope this did not come in to your mind ...
Personally I would have a look at the mentioned Dovecot-backup-script
as a start. It does really a very good job! Cudos to Klaus Tachtler!

Current thinking on backups ?
Hi,
What are people doing for backups ?
My current process is LVM snapshot and backup from that to NFS share.
But there seems to be hints around the internet that people use/abuse "doveadm backup" for backup purposes even though it seems its original intention was for transferring mailboxes between dovecot instances.
Assuming its ok to "doveadm backup" to an NFS share, is it

Maildir from offlineimap, INBOX folder created
Hi, I'm using dovecot to serve up a Maildir created/served by
offlineimap. The layout is typical (as far as I know) of maildirs, with
the root folder having cur, tmp, new, and subfolders being a folder
within the root folder. Since I'd previously used Evolution to access
this maildir, my subfolders were actual subfolders (separator /).
Anyway, it all works spiffingly well, except that I

IMAP Migration Tools
Hi,
I am looking for tools to migrate Mails from one IMAP-Server to
another. Until now I have always used imapsync, but it seems very
slow. Even over a 2x10GB/s connection I only get speeds of about
600KiB/s, because the programm always pauses betweeen every single
mail.
Does anyone here have a suggestion for an alternative?
Thanks in advance

migrate Maildir to mdbox
Hi,
I replaced HDDs in my home server and reinstalled the OS (Ubuntu
17.04). Since I had some time I reviewed my Dovecot configuration and
changed a couple of things, including mailbox format.
Now I would like to migrate e-mail (about 20G -- I use this server as an
e-mail archive). The Maildir is available on the (old) hard disk. The
new dovecot is running. What should I use? Would mbsync work?

Converting user mailboxes from maildir to sdbox
Hello,
I've got a Postfix/Dovecot server setup. Currently Dovecot is version
2.3.6, and it's using Maildir storage. The mailbox is:
mail_home = /home/vmail/mailboxes/%d/%n
mail_location = maildir:~/mail:LAYOUT=fs
I'm wanting to convert from Maildir to sdbox. I looked at:
https://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat
I was initially thinking mdbox but that's multiple messages per

linking non-neighboring networks together?
I am trying to determine the best way to link different private networks
together, similar to the branch office example given online. However, in my
case, the private networks are split up. For example, I would like to
connect subnets such as:
10.30.0.0/16
172.23.0.0/16
10.90.50.0/24
192.168.3.0/24
How does this affect my tinc-up files? What subnet mask do I give the tinc
interface? Can this

Can't access maildir with dovecot
I'm a total newbie regarding imap servers. I'm trying to set up a
Offlineimap/dovecot/Gnus system and Gnus complains that it cannot access
the maildir... Here is my setup, put together by copying stuff from
around the web without any prior knowledge of these tools...

Migrating from Maildir to Maildir:LAYOUT=fs
Hi
I have use dovecot together with offlineimap to download my gmail
account on a single user computer and I have only one maildir
(~/Maildir).
As I switched to Mac, I would like to use spotlight to index my mails,
which apparently does not work as they are in hidden directories
(.directories). So I would like to change to LAYOUT=fs. Is there an easy
way to migrate my email structure? I have

offlineimap with dovecot: file-time is one hour in the future
I use offlineimap to sync my remote IMAP-server with my local
IMAP-server (maildir format).
But I don't understand this behavior:
every new mail in the INBOX has a file-date which is one hour in the
future.
Is this 'normal'? Is this a problem of offlineimap?
I tried this debugging (for dovecot):
mail_executable = /usr/lib/dovecot/rawlog /usr/lib/dovecot/imap
and this (for offlineimap):

migrate Maildir to mdbox
Silly question?
Which is preferred? MailDir or Mbox? (directory vs flat file)
How would you do this when migrating from an old server to a new one?
Thx

imapc with Outlook.com transfers max 22-23 messages per mailbox!?
Hi,
I'm trying to migrate a user from Outlook.com IMAP to Dovecot. I'm
using a setup similar to that on
http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Migration/Dsync:
imapc_host = imap-mail.outlook.com
imapc_user = [...]@hotmail.com
imapc_password = [...]
imapc_features = rfc822.size fetch-headers
mail_prefetch_count = 20
imapc_port = 993
imapc_ssl = imaps
imapc_ssl_verify = yes
