move mailbox to LAYOUT=fs
Hello,
I think about migrating small servers storage to LAYOUT=fs
(http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailLocation/Maildir#Directory_layout)
Is there a smooth way to adjust the existing folders?

LAYOUT=fs and subfolders listing

LAYOUT=fs still uses 'dot' prefixes for folders
running latest dovecot HEAD, per,
http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation/Maildir
i've set LAYOUT=fs,
dovecot -n| grep -i layout
mail_location: maildir:/data/mail:LAYOUT=fs
and expect,
maildirs to actually use physical directories, such as:
* Maildir/folder/
* Maildir/folder/subfolder/
but, autocreate at login creates folders using "dot" prefixes, e.g.,

Dovecot doesn't seem to read userdb for the first delivery
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hello List,
First of all, this is my first post so please bear with me if I miss
something.
I'm using Postfix with Dovecot 2.0.19 as the LDA. The home directory is
of the
form `/var/mail/virtual/<domain>/<username>`. The mail directory is
under the
home directory and named `mail`. `mail_location` is left empty, and

My sub-folder with Outlook work-around to date
Hi,
What we do, on the dovecot side, is:
mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:LAYOUT=fs:DIRNAME=mAildir
See: https://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailLocation/Maildir
This has been working out very nicely for many years.
I'm not sure though that there is a way to 'move' to that config without
having to basically migrate all your mailboxes.

No AUTH PLAIN with dovecot 2.0.19
Hi
I have installed the package dovecot-postfix on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS:
dovecot --version: 2.0.19
postconf -d | grep version: 2.9.6
and receiving email works very fine, but relaying email does not work.
I think the problem is that after STARTTLS the authentication is not
being executed
250-AUTH PLAIN
250-AUTH=PLAIN
which means using telnet returns

LDAP schema for mailLocation?
Hi,
I would like to try implementing user specific default_mail_env's as described
here:
http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/MailLocation
using the LDAP attribute 'mailLocation'.
However, I have been unable to find any LDAP schema which contains
mailLocation. What schema is this attribute part of?
Thanks,

Documentation update
Hi guys,
this page needs to be updated:
https://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailLocation/Maildir#Control_files
(link was from here: https://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailLocation)
Section 'Control files' is mentioning only 2 files but, in fact,
Dovecot will store some additional files in CONTROL location:
dovecot-uidvalidity
dovecot-uidvalidity.*
subscriptions
(anything more?)

My sub-folder with Outlook work-around to date
Hi All,
Thanks to MJ for the suggestion as my only hope, and I have tested this
with Outlook 2016 and Thunderbird today - seamless creation of folders.
Now the mammoth task of converting customers with masses of mbox folders
to MailDir format using the on-line perl script: mb2md-3.20.pl
Works nicely and will be what gets us out of trouble. My only sadness is
that Outlook then has to be

LDAP mailLocation weirdness
Hi,
I've reported this some month ago before (without response), but still
I have no clue what is going wrong.
Our installation is LDAP based (for virtual hosting) and up to I think
alpha2 or 3 everything was working as expected. The trouble I have is
that dovecot does not correctly use the information it gets about
mailLocation.
This is what is stored in the MailMessageStore attribute

mail_location and storage type
Hi,
I was setting up a new system for testing Dovecot 1.0. My old one is
using 0.99 and was set up quite a time ago, so I had to consult the
documentation.
I needed several attempts until it worked and that was because the
designated maildir directory /server/mail/jrg/Maildir was completely
empty. Upon login the server exited and wrote the following to the log:
POP3(jrg): Ambiguous mail location

Seperator
Hi all
I hope to get some help on the separator. I am sure that I hava a wrong
understanding what the separator is.
I thaught the separator is the delimiter within the imap folder structure.
For example:
Imap folder structure: folder Flights, subfolder Lufthansa
If the delimiter is ?.? the ls ?a command should result:
.Flights .Flights.Lufthansa
If delimiter is

setting up home directories
Hello,
I have not been using the home directory but I read in MailLocation.txt that
I probably should. Does dovecot create each directory? What does it put in
there? My server uses mbox format. My users all look like this:
[root at sendmail log]# finger chayes
Login: chayes Name: 50387.00
Directory: /home/chayes Shell: /sbin/nologin
Never logged in.

My sub-folder with Outlook work-around to date
Thanks for the reply MJ.
Good to hear it works in MailDir format - might need to look at this.
To date I have only had this issue with Outlook and for me personally on
Fedora with Thunderbird, I tend to keep a heap of e-mail folders without
sub-foldering and have my own little Linux 'utopia' of annually
archiving folders etc using the Linux scripting environment, so I never

In reading http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailLocation it is not clear to me the syntax for setting mail_location inside a userdb block.

Suggested location for single-dbox
I've updated http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailLocation regarding a typical
mail_location entry for dbox.
Previously it said:
mail_location = dbox:~/dbox
but of course "dbox" is now the old name for "sdbox", so the example
should be updated to say "sdbox" and there might/ought also to be an
example for "mdbox".

Override quota settings with LDAP
Hi all,
my current Dovecot setup is fetching both the imap quota limit and the
mail location settings from LDAP entries.
user_attrs = [...] UDBmailQuota=quota_rule=*:bytes=%$, mailLocation=mail
That is because we have 3 users who wants to fetch their mail from
/var/mail/<username>. All the other users have maildir with maildir quota.
The LDAP entry for /var/mail user looks like this:
