XFS vs EXT4 for mail storage
Hello,
I'm in the process of finalizing the spec for my new dovecot VM, and
this is the last question I need to address...
I've read until I'm just about decided on XFS, but I have no experience
with it (been using reiserfs on my old box (@ 8 yrs old now), and never
had a problem (knock on wood), but considering its current situation
(little to no development support for reasons

Change default mode for attachment files
Hi
I migrated my dovecot server from Maildir to mdbox with saving attachments
to external files and enabled SIS a few days ago.
Everything works fine except one issue. I have both virtual and system
users. Dovecot saves attachments with mode 0600. So I catch such errors for
system users:
dovecot: lda(wasya): Error: fs-sis: Couldn't read hash file

Disk space usage with mdbox
Why things happen is one of the great mysteries and joys of being a
sysadmin...
As for cleaning up SIS, I believe the "doveadm purge" command takes care
of it. I have a daily cronjob which includes:
#!/bin/sh
# Permanently expunge old Trash
doveadm expunge -A mailbox Trash savedbefore 2w
# Optimize mdbox storage
doveadm purge -A
# Update fts indexes
doveadm fts rescan -A

users of dbox format
Andreas,

mdbox is THE reason why I am trying Dovecot. With mailboxes of several (tens
of) GB with several k of messages I hope mdbox will speedup backups. Also
SIS for attachments sounds very good, but still doesn't follow the
altstorage rules (while messages go to

Doubts about dsync, mdbox, SIS
I've been running continous dsync backups of our Maildirs for a few
weeks now, with the destination dsync server using mdbox and SIS. The
idea was that the destination server would act as a warm copy of
all our active users data.
The active servers are using Maildir, and has:
$ df -h /usr/local/atmail/users/

Overriding inbox= in userdb extra fields
Hello,
I'm trying to set up an alternate user with a different inbox using passwd-file and userdb extra fields and the extra field settings don't seem to be taking effect. I've used auth_debug and mail_debug and I'm unclear how I can further troubleshoot this.
Is it possible to have inbox=yes in one namespace globally and then override this for one user by setting inbox=no for

Questions about single intance storage
Hello
We are using dovecot 2.0.16 with mdbox+zlib. We are now testing SiS (Single Instance Storage) and I have 5 questions:
1? Is possible to "dedup" existing mdboxes?
2? Are attachments compressed with zlib if mdboxes already use zlib?
3? I have plenty CPU to spare, should I use a low value of mail_attachment_min_size , like 16KB ?
4? Can I "undo" SiS if I have

Aborted dsync backup and resulting fallout
Hi,
I am in the middle of setting up a dovecot imap server to replace an aging
cyrus imapd.
The new server is using mdbox storage for better filesystem performance
and is running dovecot-2.2.32.
To migrate email over and keep UIDs etc. intact I used the backup feature
of doveadm. During testing this generally worked fine. So thanks for that
functionality, it really makes migration much

SIS attachments compressed
Hello:
In case it is defined to use zlib compression, does SIS save attachments
compressed?
I have found this question replied in the past (2012) and the answer was
NO. I ask again just to know if there have been changes or if it is in
the roadmap to add compression.
I have been testing to migrate from maildir+zlib to mdbox+zlib+sis and
the results, in terms of space used, and worst than

Disk space usage with mdbox
Daniel thank you for the advice, I have done this exact procedure to
clean up some space and I reduced the used space by more than 60% (huge
gain!). Yet it is still a mystery why this happened first place and more
important if it will occur again, time will tell. I have kept one
mailbox out of this procedure (the "live" size is 8,8G, the backup size
is less than 1GB) to do some

Errors with missing links to files when using Single Instance Storage and zlib (Dovecot 2.3.4)
Having had a week with the system I'm now inclined to believe that the
issues I've seen are not necessarily related to SIS and zlib but may be
due to replication instead.
After experiencing these issues and looking at historical mailing list posts I wrote a basic script (as was suggested as a possible diagnostic approach for SIS before SIS was even implemented!) which pulled all the

Rsync to backup dbox with SIS
We will be deploying a replacement Dovecot server soon, and we are
planning to use maildir for the primary storage, but with an archive
namespace using mdbox (or perhaps sdbox), and SIS.
Our backup servers and (luke)warm spare server need to obtain full
copies of the mail store. For the maildirs I know I can simply use rsync
(we already use it here).
I'm a little wary of using rsync with

Testing pop3/imap4 and mdbox corrupted indexes?
I have two questions:
1. What method/tool (other than a MuA) can I use to test my Dovecot setup
from Windows CLI when ssl is enabled?
I have tried connecting to to the pop3/imap4 services from a Windows PC but
here is what I get:

+OK Dovecot-2.0-sis ready.

Migrating from Maildir to dbox+SIS... sdbox or mdbox?
Ok...
Now that I've got the niggling issues resolved, on to bigger and better
things.
I want to convert everyone from Maildir to dbox and enable SIS (our
users use a lot of large attachments), and after some reading/googling,
I think it may be better to use dsync instead of rsync for the actual
migration after all since it will do this at the same time as the syncing.

Stability of extraction of attachment
Hello,
We are migrating our dovecot servers from 2.1.9 to 2.1.15 (or 2.2 if
there is a stable version soon) and maildir format to mdbox.
Looking for mdbox options I have found options:
* mail_attachment_dir
* mail_attachement_min_size
* mail_attachment_fs
* mail_attachment_hash
but this options are described with the message:

mdbox + sis attachments. Error stream is larger than expected by 1 byte
Hello!
I use Dovecot 2.3.4.1-5+deb10u1 (Debian 10 x64) with mdbox, sis and imap.
I catch many errors with attachments "Stream is larger than expected" by 1
byte in emails from Xerox WorkCentre 3345.
Examples:
Sep 20 23:20:04 mailserver dovecot: imap(wasya)<606><AG1zywGTVodVrE84>:

[ceph-users] dovecot + cephfs - sdbox vs mdbox
Thanks Jack.
That's good to know. It is definitely something to consider.
In a distributed storage scenario we might build a dedicated pool for that
and tune the pool as more capacity or performance is needed.

As with everything - it depends. You're asking me so these are *my*
