dsync: convert only mbox in /var/mail to maildir?
I'm migrating an old UW pop server to a new Dovecot server. The old server did
not allow mail to be stored on the server, so only mbox files exist in
/var/mail, with nothing in /home/$user. I'd like to copy the /var/mail
directory over to the new server and then use dsync to convert the mbox files
and put them in /home/$user/Maildir, but every permutation of the command line

dsync: mbox to maildir
Hello,
I started converting INBOX and folder from mbox to maildir.
The old folders comming from Dovecot 1.0.13 with a mail_location
mbox:%h:INBOX=/inbox/%u.
The new instalation on a different server is Dovecot 2.0.1,
mail-location maildir:~/maildir:INDEX=/addons/index/%u:
CONTROL=~/control:LAYOUT=fs
No user has logged in before.
I have copied tho old Inbox and folders into

Dsync ignores INBOX when converting from mbox to maildir
Hi,
I am trying to convert email box in mbox format to maildir++. It
converts all folders except INBOX. For example:
dsync -D -v -f -u 'info at example.org' mirror 'maildir:~/Maildir'
prints:
dsync(info at example.org): Info: Sport: only in source
So it converts Sport folder, but INBOX folder is ignored.
dovecot.conf contains:
mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u

Convert standalone mbox to standalone Maildir with Dsync - hierarchy separator error
Dear Dovecot users/devs,
I have the following mbox file:
/tmp/dsync_test/mbox/2002-September
I would like to convert it to a Maildir:
/tmp/dsync_test/maildir
(Currently, the latter is just an empty directory.)
I am attempting this on an old PC running Debian 9 ("Stretch"). I
installed the dovecot-core package in order to make the `dsync` tool
available on that PC. I have

Error using dsync to convert really old mboxes to Maildir and workaround
I ran across what I think may be a bug in dsync when trying to convert from mbox to Maildir format. My first attempt failed with a runaway dsync process spewing out thousands of identical lines of the form:
dsync(buus): Error: Duplicate mailbox GUID 00fe691ff60da85b090d0000c8119523 for mailboxes Archive/Personal and Work/VendorInfo - giving a new GUID 00fe691ff60da85b090d0000c8119523 to

mbox 2 Maildir
W/o downtime: see the wiki page below, the "Converting" section.
Briefly for my case something like this should work and generally seems
simple (no syntax checking yet, pseudo-code like):
* Configuration uses mail_location = mbox:~/mails
* setup per-user mail location and do for each user individually in a
serial manner:
-- doveadm sync maildir:~/Maildir; mbox is synced to Maildir,

"doveadm backup" wants to delete and recreate a folder if there are some changes that can't be incrementally just added to it (mainly if IMAP UIDs would need to be inserted in the middle of the folder). Maildir doesn't allow INBOX to be deleted

Thanks for the suggestion! I added those lines to the bottom of
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf .
However, when I attempted the mbox to maildir conversion afterwards, I
still received an error, albeit a

Problems converting to maildir with dsync in 2.0.6
I'm trying to convert from an old Dovecot (1.0.15) and mbox to a new
Dovecot and maildir. I'm running into several problems with dsync which
are causing my mboxes not to convert.
If I use LAYOUT=fs (as I'd prefer) I get an error because I have a
mailbox called "subscriptions", and none of my messages convert. Is
there a way to get dovecot to put its own metadata in

dsync mbox->mdbox II: highest_modseq changed
Hi again,
after replacing CRLF in 4 mboxes dsync was able to sync all of the 30+GB
mailstore to mdbox.
Now the (repeated) calling of dsync yields info messages of the kind

Preparing for replication: dsync-local(testaccount): Panic: file mbox-lock.c
I am preparing a bit for setting up replication. However when I manually
try to dsync an account, the first time I execute this[1] command it
seems to be ok. The 2nd time I am getting this error[2].
If I add -1 (one way syncing) the error disappears. Does this mean I
will have problems with setting up replication between these two
servers?

dsync: assert panic on mbox // no INBOX sync on hybrid mbox/maildir
Hi,
This (hopefully!) might be a case of user error, as I'm new to
dovecot... Alternatively it might be some confusion in an index, since
I've been mucking about trying different things in my configuration
files and had frequent crashes.
I'm trying to sync 2 (LAN) hosts, ideally to have full automatic
replication happening.
They both have hybrid mbox INBOX and maildir++ folders,

dsync inbox conversion problem (mbox -> mdbox)
Hi,
We are trying to convert all mbox mail on our systems to mdbox using
dsync, in order to be able to use email sub-folders in Thunderbird.
Everything works fine for non-inbox folders, however the inbox folders
are not getting converted.
We used:
*dsync -v convert mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u*
*dovecot --version*
2.0.beta6 (3156315704ef) (shipping with RHEL6/SL6)
*dovecot -n*

dsync mbox->mdbox: Unexpectedly lost From-line and other issues from a big conversion.
Hi,
I'm trying to convert a 33GB mail store from mbox to compressed mdbox
(largest mbox is 2.7GB). The source store is live, e.g. there are mails
delivered into it and mails are being read. Actually it is my own
mail. :)
Although my test runs were very successful I have run into trouble with
the first run on the whole store. After fighting a bit around with
errors like

Need fast Maildir to mdbox conversion
I looked around the 'Net to see if there might be a custom program for
offline Maildir to mdbox conversion. So far I haven't turned up
anything. The problem for us is that the dsync program simply takes a
lot of time to convert mailboxes. I wonder if time could be saved with a
program that is optimized to convert mailboxes without the fancy locking
that dsync needs to do. Does have (or

mbox 2 Maildir
Hi,
I am not an professional system admin, but I am running a small debian
mail server for many years. It is time to migrate from mbox to Maildir.
There is a nice and clean description for doing this without service
downtime at https://wiki.dovecot.org/Tools/Doveadm/Sync
I have to set per-user config for mailbox type using userdb extra fields.
However, I miss some information and I can not

dsync error Mailbox has children, delete them first
Hi,
I use dsync to backup mailboxes from mbox format to mdbox on a remote
system. The first run for a user with dsync is OK, but during the
second there are lots of the following errors:
dsync-remote(user): Error: Can't delete mailbox directory Example:
Mailbox has children, delete them first
I see no way how I could influence the order dsync deletes mailboxes.

Need to convert mbox to Maildir
I have a mbox file of emails. I want to convert this to Maildir giving me individual message
files per email. I've looked at dsync, but as far as I can tell this wants a specific target
user and it appears that it will "distribute" the converted messages into that user's INBOX.
I don't want to put these mbox messages into any particular user's Maildir hierarchy, just

mbox 2 Maildir
Hi,
I am experimenting with the migration.
I unset mail_location, thus it is empty and dovecot performs automatic
mailbox detection. Therefore I do not need per-user set of mail
location. I login as a testuser and do:
doveadm sync maildir:~/Maildir
It seems for me that in this situation the new Maildir becomes the
active mail delivery location at the time of the creation(?) or
completing the
