About doing backups with kvm guests
Hi all, I have two centos 5.4 servers that I use to run several windows kvm guests (10). All works ok (more or less) but I have a problem with backups. These windows guests are configured to use lvm partitions as a virtual disks. My problem is when I need to do guests backups. which is the best form to backup and restore these windows guests? Some examples? I see snapshot's lvm

Using ssd disks for kvm guests
Hi all, Recently I have acquired a supermicro e200-8d micro server to use it as my homelab. It is equipped with two ssd disks. My idea is to install several kvm guests on it, but I have some doubts about what type of filesystem (ext4 or xfs?) or block to use (lvm). Recommendations? Do I need to accomplish some type of running if I choose to use ext4 or xfs?? Thanks.

LiveCD System recovery - Mounting LVM?
Hi, I am trying to recover data from my old system which had LVM. The disk had two partitions - /dev/sda1 (boot, Linux) and /dev/sda2 (Linux LVM). I had taken a backup of both partitions using dd. Now I am booting of CentOS live cd for system restore. I recreated partitions like previous system using fdisk and then used dd to dump all the data onto it. I would like to mount sda2 as LVM, but I

Network isolation for KVM guests
Hi all, What options exists under CentOS hosts to work with isolated networks?. For example, on BSD systems it is really trivial. In FreeBSD you can use setfib tools and on OpenBSD it is possible to use rdomain options. In 30 secs it is possible to work with isolated networks and assign process, ip address and routes (hidden from the main route table and ip addresses), etc. But I can't

Network isolation for KVM guests (SOLVED)
This can be if one of these interfaces isn't a wireless nic. But I need to use a wireless nic and another phys nic. At least, I have solved the problem using network namespaces. All works ok and expected now. OT: Building NFS server with LVM and snapshots enabled
Hi all, I need to build a NFS CentOS 5.1 based server with LVM and snaphosts for disaster recovering to serve storage to three ESX servers for a development dept. I have 500 GB for storage. Data that I need to store on this server is 150 GB and can grow to 210 GB to the end of year ... My questions are: - Is it possible to do some type of scripting to do data snapshots every day and

Using LVM snapshots to backup NTFS partitions for windows guests
Hi everyone! I''ve been reading this list for a while and I''m thinking that the best way to do backups is using LVM snapshots as discussed here several times. The problem is that when i use a LVM logical volume as windows disk, windows writes the partition table onto the LV so the LV itself is not a partition - it''s a whole disk. lvm/device-mapper does not create the

Using the host's LVM to manage virtual disks
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 i am envisioning a scenario that a fellow sysadmin is employing using xen, where the host is configured with LVM. basically, one volume group spans the physical disk. then, various logical volumes are created for the host and (Linux) guest OSes. this makes it easy to resize logical volumes should it be needed. is a setup like this possible with

centos5.5 text install forcing me to add all disks to LVM volgroup
Graphic installer doesn't like my graphics card, so I am using the text installer. I have two physical disks in my system. When I get to the "partitioning type" page, I choose "remove all partitions on selected drives [etc]" and put an asterisk next to sda, no asterisk next to sdb. I want to use sdb as a separate partition, no LVM, I figure I can set it up after

LVM-snapshot based KVM VMs
Good m/d/n guys, wanted to put idea through you before trying to implement this. So afaik LVM snapshots basically don't take any "real" space on hard drives. I'm using KVM virtualization on my hosts and let's say i create an LVM volume for my linux VM, then install it properly, shut it down and take LVM snapshot of it. Basically i've just cloned it (LVM2 snapshots are

using an lvm for kvm vm
Is there a simple way to directly install a vm on an lvm (or proably seperate LVM's for root and swap)? For example something like: lvcreate -L 10G -n testvm_root vg_myvg lvcreate -L 1G -n testvm_swap Then somehow setup the VM to be able to directly install and boot the vm from these LV's. How do I do this? Could you then pause the virtual machine and safely take an LVM snapshot,

Physical disks + Software Raid + lvm in domU
Hi, I''m trying to setup my box as described below: - The Dom0 exports two disks as physical devices to the DomU - DomU use the two devices to assemble a software raid device (/dev/md0) - On the /dev/md0 I create a lvm volume group and lvm volumes on it. Everything seems to work fine if the lvm volumes on the DomU are lightly used. Under heavy load the DomU freeze up immediately. The

not using LVM for Linux VM guests?
I came across an old post comment yesterday (from http://echenh.blogspot.com/2010/04/how-to-extend-lvm-on-vmware-guest-os.html ) discussing the "hack" of LVM on Linux VM guests and whether it's better not to use it to simplify disk management. I've re-posted the comment below, does it sound reasonable? Is it better to not use LVM on Linux VM guests? --Russell

Slightly OT: First Time KVM and LVM on Centos
Greetings - I am a novice system administrator and will soon be purchasing a new server to replacing an aging file server for my company. I am considering setting up the new server as a KVM host with two guests; one guest as the Samba file server and a second guest as a testing area. My old server was set up about 7 years ago and has a 5 disk raid 5 configuration without LVM. I understand

Advice on CentOS 7, software raid 1, lvm, 3 TB disks
Greetings - I am preparing to order a new desktop system for work. In general the new system will be a Dell Precision T3610 with two 3 TB drives. I plan on installing CentOS 7 as a KVM host, with virtual machines for Win 7 Pro and Linux Mint. I am looking for some advice or a good how-to on configuring software raid on the two drives, then using LVM for the host and virtual machines. I

Slightly OT: Centos KVM Host/Guest functions and LVM considerations
Greetings - I will be getting a new server for my company in the next few months and am trying to get a better understanding of some of the basic theoretical approaches to using Centos KVM on a server. I have found plenty of things to read that discuss how to install KVM on the host and how to install a guest and setup the network bridge, and all the other rudimentary tasks. But all of
