sofware caused connection abort
Hi there, some of my users use putty to connect to my server via ssh protocol. After some time they get the above error message, and it could be that my CentOS-side configuration caused this. Do anybody has experience with this problem? - Gergely

installing Desktop faster
Hi there, I installed centos 7 -- it works great. What made me think is that installation took 1300 packages for a Desktop with some add-ons. As usual, there might be a solution for this already but I do not know it. Would it be possible to create one big package for a standard Desktop? Then an installation would not take ages. - Gergely

backup question
Dear CentOs users, I have a centos server with nothing important at the moment, but I would like to install some web-based project management tool (trac for the curious) that would contain important data. And, as my network is growing the configuration of the server is becoming complex. I would like to have a proper backup so that I can restore the whole system easily, should any problem occur.

command line configuration of DSL access
Hi there, how can I configure a DSL access using the command line? The Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide does not describe this and I could not find any description on the internet. - Gergely

Opera is slow on CentOS
Hi there, I am running various browsers on my CentOS 6.5. Firefox is running smoothly, especially with blocking flash animations. I recently installed Opera and I use Seamonkey for long, both suffers from being very slow. Does CentOS have any role in this? For your information I send cpuinfo, some people on #centos said that this could be the problem -- but then why Firefox flies? - Gergely $

exam
Dear CentOS users, is it possible to prepare for a certified (big North American Linux vendor) engineer exam with a CentOS install ? I have heard that the test contains questions on specific GUIs, are they included in the CentOS distribution? - Gergely

mac address in prompt
Hi there, for some reasons bash writes out my host's mac address as a result of including \h in PS1. Do you know why? This was not always so. [gergoe at x0-13-xx-xx-xx-xx ~]$ echo $PS1 [\u@\h \W]\$ - Gergely

ps/2 mouse stopped working
Hi there, I was using a ps/2 mouse. I had to connect a ps/2 keyboard. As I have only one ps/2 socket I connected an usb mouse. I then removed the other keyboard and reconnected the ps/2 mouse and removed the usb mouse. Now the ps/2 mouse does not work, even after reboot. What should I do? - Gergely

A query on graphic console
I'm only getting a text console with CentOS-7.2 on my (oldish) HP MicroServer. The only explicit error I see in Xorg.0.log is that no driver is found for my Pixart USB optical mouse. My query is: would that be sufficient to prevent a graphic console? Incidentally, I can use X apps, eg xpdf, if I ssh in from my laptop. As always, any advice gratefully received. -- Timothy Murphy

[LLVMdev] Issue with std::call_once in PPC64 platform
Hi all, I observe that r220932 (Removing the static initializer in ManagedStatic.cpp by using llvm_call_once to initialize the ManagedStatic mutex.) is causing tablegen to segfault in PPC platforms during static initialization. The crash happens while calling std::call_once introduced by this patch in the wrapper used in getManagedStaticMutex. I understand this call is buggy for some platforms

centos kernel changelog?
I'm probably overlooking something simple, but I can't seem to find a concise changelog for the rhel/centos kernel. I'm on an oldish 6.5 kernel (2.6.32-431), and I want to look at the changes and fixes for every kernel that has been released since, all the way up to the current 6.6 kernel. Anyone have a link to this? Thanks! Matt

Xen HVM cpuid problem
Hi Keir, For HVM guests, all cpuid Fn''s going through domain_cpuid() iterate over the loop and then return 0 for all four registers. Guests OS''s and cpuid tools in HVM which query for cpuid Fn 0000.0000 %eax and 8000.0000 %eax, see the value 0 and think, Xen emulates oldish 386/486 CPUs. This leads to strange boot failures, "your CPU does not support long mode" or

Massive Virtual Drive, is it possible?
I'm new to the world of linux, and I was wondering if you could help me out. There reason, I'm come over to linux, is to try and create a massive virtual drive, that I could attacth to my servers, and have them use it. Speed is not essential, but functionality is. There are not that many people logging onto the network, only about thirty, and there are no mission critical applications

[LLVMdev] Issue with std::call_once in PPC64 platform
Hi Bill, You can find the same issue in the buildbot: http://lab.llvm.org:8011/builders/clang-ppc64-elf-linux2/builds/16444/steps/compile.llvm.stage2/logs/stdio It is failing for me both in BE (gcc 4.8.2) and LE(4.9.1). I am compiling with clang 3.5, but those are the gcc toolchains I am using. What do you think is the best way to fix this? Thanks! Samuel Bill Schmidt <wschmidt at

CentOS 4.3 Server spontaneously rebooting (over and over again)
Hi there, This post has also been posted in the Hardware and General forums but I thought it might be wise to post it here as well! My CentOS 4.3 (upgraded from CentOS 4.2 installed from Linux Magazine's April 2006 issue) server is rebooting spontaneously (over and over again). It started while I was copying from USB-device (iPod) to another USB-device (Freecom Portable-Hard-disk) but it

rlimit sandbox on cygwin
Hi all. I have an old windows VM with an oldish cygwin that I use for the regression tests. Investigating one of the test failures, I see that it's for UsePrivilegeSeparation=sandbox, and it seems to be because setrlimit(RLIMIT_FSIZE, ...) is not supported. IMO, this isn't a big loss, since the most useful thing in the rlimit "sandbox" is the descriptor limits. Can anyone see

[LLVMdev] Issue with std::call_once in PPC64 platform
Ok, I'll put a patch together to fix this later today. I'll probably do what Reid was suggesting and use what is already in there for Windows. An R vs. SAS Discrepancy: How do I determine which is correct?
I was messing around with some data in R and SAS (the reason is unimportant) fitting a multiple linear regression and got a curious discrepancy. The data set is too big to post, but if someone wants it, I can send it. So, here are the (partial) results: From R: Coefficients: Estimate Std. Error t value Pr(>|t|) (Intercept) 61.11434 1.48065 41.275 < 2e-16 *** sexWomen
