Starting a java applet from the desktop
CentOS-5.4 i86_64
I have a calculator applet on my desktop (superbcalc.jar). When I
double click on it I get no response. If I right click and select
open with java I get no response. If I open a terminal window and
cd to Desktop and type java -jar superbcalc.jar then the applet
opens.
Does anyone have any idea why I am seeing this behaviour? There are
no messages in the syslog file relating

MS Windows Advanced Server 2000
We have a very old MS-Windows Domain Controller running on equally old

virtualised CentOS-6.5 . Other than most user desktops this is the last
remaining MS based system here and we would really, really like to shut it
down. Our plan is to join two Samba4

virtual machine host system and not from our AD DC DHCP server.
To clarify, the virbr0 IP address

Plain requirement: desktop search
Just wondering, what exactly is supported/suggested:
I need a comprehensive desktop search functionality. Not only
searching for file names but also for content and meta data. The
environment is EL6.8 / Gnome2. I have noticed that "beagle" is
not part of the distro anymore. Any suggestions for such requirement?
Thanks!

[OT] linux on a PPC (mac mini)
Hello there,
complete off-topic, sorry about this, but my former idea was to install
a CentOS on an old mac mini (PPC!). Disappointed to see that PowerPC is
not a supported architecture and that non ARM or Intel architecture are
not managed by recent distros.. :-(.
Searching the web, I see very few possibilities to install a recent (I
need gnome2) GNU/Linux distro on such hardware. I gave Linux

Ztmonitor shows RX is always on.
Details:
Asterisk 1.0.9
Zaptel 1.0
Dell P3 1ghz with X100P Clone
Location: India
This is an interesting issue where when I open up ZTMonitor, it shows the RX
as being on. It seems that Zaptel doesn't know to hang up the line so after
a couple of hours when the telecom cuts the line, everythign stops working.
Things I've tried include playing with the zaptel.conf, trying zaptel

(gnome-session:5212) error
One user gets the gnome-session: 5212 error when he tries to log on.
The error states that "Could not create /home/.gnome2/ Permission

"Could not create ~/.gnome/ Permission denied"
Any suggestions are welcomed......

Partial Function Application
Hi. I would like to partially apply a function to a list of arguments,
and I don't know how to do this in R, without perhaps writing default
values to the formals() of my function, or writing to the environment
object of a function. For context, my definition of partially apply
is: "fix some of the arguments, leaving the others as variables,
return a new function that takes the un-fixed

I have been trying to get wine up and running for some time. I work with
the Debian Linux system with a KDE Desktop. Debian is supplying version
1.0.1 . I just installed the .deb file from the Wine website which is
version 1.1.24. That is the highest version available for the Debian
system. All of the versions that I have tried have the same thing wrong
with the graphic interface. I will use

Data aggregation question
Hi all,
I'm working with a sizable dataset that I'd like to summarize, but I
can't find a tool or function that will do quite what I'd like. Basically,
I'd like to summarize the data by fully crossing three variables and getting
a count of the number of observations for every level of that 3-way
interaction. For example, if factors A, B, and C each have 3 levels (all of

Desktop lag with CentOS7/Mate and high CPU usage
We have noticed significant desktop/UI lag on CentOS7 workstations using
Mate when the CPU usage is high - i.e. the mouse pointer lags and moving
windows (e.g. terminal windows) become jumpy (not smooth)
We didn't see (or notice) this issue with CentOS6/Gnome2
This can easily be shown by running something like 'cpuburn'
(https://patrickmn.com/projects/cpuburn/) and moving a

weird characters in files created by gnome login on samba share
Hello,
I just tried a gnome login with an empty home directory on a samba
mounted directory, and this resulted in several files with strange
characters in the filenames in the end. (as created by the initial gnome
login)
I cannot reproduce this by hand, and it certainly does not happen when I
do the login on a local directory, or when I copy that local directory
to the samba directory.
I use

allow access to shares authenticating from a Windows 2000 Active Directory
Domain.
I have got almost everythign I want to work, but I am stuck with one
thing. I would like to add domain users to a local unix group and then
add that group to the valid users line to a share. Enclosed is my

Icecast2 / Ogg / oddcastDSP / Winamp2 Constant Prebuffering
Sounds like WinAmp isn't storing a large enough buffer, or Icecast isn't
putting a long enough buffer between what it recieves from Oddcast & what it
transmits to clients.
I've never had such a problem, though. Could be your connection?
