unprivileged users rebooting at console
I'm curious why any user logged in at the console can issue the 'reboot' command and reboot the system.? I've tested/verified this to work, and read some older posts about this.? If it were a bug, I suspect it would be fixed by now.
Also, if a user is logged into the console, and then logs in via ssh from another system, that user can also reboot the system from that ssh

Installing CentOS via USB thumbdrive
I've been poking at this for quite a while, and have never been able to get it to work.
I've found a couple links with some partial truths:
? http://brakkee.org/site/2013/05/09/creating-a-usb-install-for-centos-6-4/
The first one talks about converting a standard iso to a 'hybrid' image, using:?

minimal X applications needed to export to remote server?
I'm running a piece of network backup software called 'bacula', on a minimal CentOS 6.4 install.
I got everything working pretty well, but there's one piece giving me some problem-- a component which gives status info via a GUI.
In the past, on previous installations, I could ssh to the bacula server with the -X option, and run the application (called 'bat'), and it would

idea: "hybrid" iso images?
In order to create a bootable CentOS installation USB thumb drive, there are several steps one must follow.? The process often involves using a Windows box, which can be kinda annoying.
The Linux Mint distro has what they call a "Hybrid" iso image.
?(see: ? http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/744 )
This image can be written to a thumb drive and used for installation simply by

Dell R515 with PERC H700 - JBOD?
Hello, I'm curiuos if anyone knows if it's possible to set up a Dell R515 (which has PERC H700) to be JBOD.
It seems the only options are RAID0 or RAID1.
I read posts, where people say it can by done by making each disk its own RAID0.? This works, but it wigs out when that disk is removed, and forgets a disk was ever there (unless I go back in the PERC and fix it).
My plan is to have a

I have a system running CentOS 6.3, with a SCSI attached RAID:

For disaster recovery purposes, I want to build up a spare system which could take the place of the server hosting the RAID above.
But here's what I see:

iptables port forwarding
I have a simple requirement/test I'm trying to perform, but having difficulty.
I have a system with 2 interfaces, BoxA:
eth0? 172.26.50.102
eth1? 192.101.77.62
My goal is to have a tcp port built on BoxA such that hosts on the 192.101.77.0/24 network can reach a port on a different box on the 172.26.0.0/16 network.
The target system is 172.26.10.120?? tcp/22
The port I wish to build is

Suggestion for merging xl save/restore/migrate/migrate-receive
Hi,
As we talked in
http://lists.xen.org/archives/html/xen-devel/2013-09/msg00211.html , I have a
suggestion: what about merging xl save/restore/migrate/migrate-receive?
Here is the description: xl-migrate.rst
Also there is a workaround for the xl migration daemon example: xl-migrate-socat.rst
Patch for the example: xen-xl-migrate-socat.patch

Problems with minicom on CentOS 4.4
Hi all
I am a newcomer of this ML. And I installed CentOS a
couple of hours ago on my i386 box because it is said
that CentOS is a community based binary distro of
RHEL. Before that I used to use RH9(it is quite out of
date for my newly upgraded PC) as my host environment
to work on embedded systems.
The installation procedure went smoothly and after
that everything looked functional, however, I

using 'socat' to relay Dovecot SASL's auth socket over TCP?
hi,
i've been running Exim & Dovecot together on the same box.
Exim's been sharing Dovecot/SASL auth info over a local unix socket.
works great.
i'm now splitting Exim & Dovecot onto two different boxes.
iiuc, Dovecot ONLY provides a UNIX (local) socket; *not* a TCP socket
for over-the-network access. SUre, I could mount the Dovecot socket's
volume over NFS ... but

How to repeat pri show span and zap show channel commands
Hi,
For debugging purpose, it might be useful to repeat every 30s or so, pri
show span and zap show channel commands have the results merged with
/var/log/asterisk/full log file?
Any better idea than running an dedicated shell script with a "asterisk -rx
pri show span 1" line ?

Minicom and Ncurses
Hi,
I have to do some maintenance on a CentOS 7 proxy installed on a routerboard
without a video card. The only way to access this machine directly is via
Minicom and serial port.
I'm using NetworkManager TUI (nmtui) to configure network interfaces, but
Ncurses rendering in Minicom works in the sense that chickens fly and horses
swim. What you get is a forest of question marks with a few

Running samba in Kubernetes
Hello,
I have successfully (hopefully) configured samba to run in Kubernetes
pods, basically I have a pod (i.e. container) that run winbindd and join
the Windows AD, and a pod (i.e. container) that run smbd.
I have used socat to allow the unix socket communication between
winbindd and smbd pods:

Terminal emulation and serial ports
I have to reinit a firewall that can only be done from its console port,
and I do not have an XP system with Hyperterminal on it.
So I went through the archive and learned that minicom could do the job
for me. I installed it and went to configure it (minicom -s). I can
set the speeds, but the challenge is selecting the serial device. I
have a Serial-to-USB dongle, and when I connect it,

I've always had great luck using dd to copy entire disks, and booting on other systems.? However, I'm having difficulty with a couple systems.? I boot using an install DVD so the OS disk is quiet, and dd to my target disk:

/dev/sdb is the blank disk.? The disks are 2T.? After a few hours the operation is complete.? But when I

Solution to communicating with UDP and other interfaces (under Linux) using R
I'd spent hours with Google trying to find how to control a separate
software package from R via a UDP interface (I could run the package
under a "system" command, but that was too slow). I finally figured out
a way to communicate with UDP through R, and it works fine (using the
"system" command) - it's also fast.

minicom
I need a terminal program, such as minicom, which I see is not part of
my Strongbolt install of CentOS+BQ loaded on a RaQ 4 system. Does anyone
know if a standard rpm for minicom should work or where to get a package
that will provide minicom or other terminal program? Or, perhaps there
is another terminal program installed in my system that I can look for?

is it possible to login to a switch via RS232 / serial port from the shell?
Hi all
I have a problem switch in our data centre, which is connected to a
linux server via a serial cable. I know I can / could access the switch
from my Windows PC back at the office, using hyperterm, but trying to
access it using minicom just doesn't seem to work.
I have changed the comms in minincom to use /dev/tty0 & the baud rate to
9600, yet I can't seem to connect with
