Drag & Scroll
When using drag and drop, the browser window will not scroll if you move the mouse off the page. This makes it very difficult, if not impossible to create certain types of web applications.
I know this has been mentioned before and is on the Wish List, but it''s very frustrating.
If you look at this other Javascript library called "Drag''nDrop & DHTML Library"

Prototype: Position.clone()
Does the duplicate clone method of Position serve a subtle purpose
that I don''t understand? I feel kind of foolish even asking, but ...
I just don''t get it. I''ve been looking at this for a couple days now
and as far as I can tell, the first definition is useless as it gets
overlaid by the second one. I don''t see any closure trickery going on
here, either.

CSS and autocompleter
hi.
I''m rewriting the code from my own save-yourself-if-you-can
implementation of xmlhttprequest to scriptaculous autocompleter, and
it''s all fine and dandy, except that I am having difficulty
positioning the auto_complete div which contains the results returned
by xmlhttprequest.
the auto_complete div is always stuck in one place, it starts a

Pretty Data Grid
Hey everyone,
I''m looking for a good way to display a table of data in rails. I
want something with scroll bars and resizable columns. Am I crazy for
trying this? Is there a class or such already written that makes
pretty data grids?

Upgrade server to run on Rails 2.3.2/F11
Note that one of the 8 patches (#6) will be sent separately in reply
to this email, as some of the replaced lines are too long, so git
won't let me send the email. However, there is nothing wrong with
that patch, and it should be applied in the sequence listed below.
Note also that I assume this will be tested on a clean f11 install, rather
than an upgrade of an existing ovirt server

Alternatives to Rico LiveGrid?
I''m no friend of paging, but I have to somehow deal with lists of
potentially large numbers of objects. The Rico LiveGrid[*] at first
blush seems attractive, but has some major drawbacks. It doesn''t work
with Safari/Konqueror, not yet anyway. It can only handle fixed-size
tables and requires that widths, including column widths, are
hand-crafted.

Protoype problem
Hey everybody,
I encountered an interesting problem today. Here is what I have:
I used the prototype function "Position.clone(src, target)" which
actually copies the top, left, offsetWidth and offsetHeight from the src
to the target.
interestingly, my src-object had a css-styled border of 1px, and a total
offsetWidth of 320px. my target-object had the same properties, but once

Ampersand Heartburn
Greetings all.
I''m using the Microsoft "NorthWind Traders" database "orders" table as
test data for the Rico LiveGrid JavaScript.
The problem I''m noticing is that some of the records in the "ShipName"
field contain ampersands -- which for some reason are not being escaped
by Rails.
Rails does in fact automatically escape all of the other

OpenRico LiveGrid or similar
Hi
Has anyone used OpenRico''s "on-demand listbox" LiveGrid or something
similar in a Rails app already? How well does it behave?
I''m asking this because I need a scrollable list but the number of
records in the table could be well above 5000. In the past I''ve used
similar "on-demand fetchings" in desktop apps and it was a real
blessing (the

CumulativeOffset
Hey All,
I have a fairly basic question about the prototype.js library. First,
I''ve been looking for documentation on this and I have yet to find it.
If any of you know of any, please let me know. Since I''m new to both
the scriptaculous and prototype libraries could someone explain why I
would want to use the cumulativeOffset method and not to just grab the
offset off

Rails/Ajax question from a newbie (to both)
I''m trying to get a Rico LiveGrid working, and I am a bit stuck on how to
accomplish this.
I have a page that successfully queries a controller and updates a <div>
containing a table. I have two
versions of the action; one uses the render_partial to return a rendered
version of that table, and the
other returns an XML-RPC document, and this is where I hit a snag.
The Rico LiveGrid

RE: how to use Effect.BlindUp for resizing a div
var height = someElementReference.offsetHeight;
and to set it:
someElementReference.style.height = "100";
It is worth saying that offsetHeight and offsetWidth are non-standard compliance. They will give you the total rendering height and this will cause problems in IE since they use a different box model than FireFox. So you will have to do some height juggling in IE if you are using

Draggables and overflow div''s revisited
I have two scrollable div''s (overflow:auto), one with
a list of elements (the source) and the other is the
drop target (dest).
I''ve enabled ghosting so that the drag element gets
out of the scrollable box (good).
Interesting, at least on Firefox, the ghosted drag
ends up going ''under'' the destination div when I drag
it. No amount of z-order fidding seems to

Positioning
I''m trying to understand the Position object. Specially the various
offset methods. From looking at the code I think I may understand them
but I wanted to run it by the group to make sure I had a clear
understanding.
realOffset - This returns the coordinates of the element as if none of
the elements on the page are scrollable from the document edge.
cumulativeOffset - This returns

Element.getDimensions
Hi all,
should it be considered a bug that Element.getDimensions returns the
offsetWidth and offsetHeight properties from elemens having not
display none, but clientWidth and clientHeight from elements with
display none?
Or is it a feature?

Draggable with auto-scroll
Thomas, I''m mostly writing this to you. A couple weeks ago I grabbed the
latest SVN version of dragdrop.js because I needed the auto-scroll
functionality. I just fixed something in that script that wasn''t working
correctly and thought you might want to hear about it. You may have
already caught it since I grabbed the script but here it is anyway.

Javascript & Scrolling
I am currently in the middle of creating a horizontal scrolling
product list with page buttons that use effects to scroll from one
page to another using scriptaculous.
I am having problem that when the window is resized, so only the
viewable area of the div changes, this causes the width to change and
then because of that the scroll effect will scroll to position 2000
but then when the scroll bar

Position.clone and scroll offsets
I noticed that in a case where I use Position.clone, the element with
the cloned position is displayed somewhere off. My understanding of
positioning is a bit shaky at times, but I think clone needs to take
into account the scroll offsets as shown below.
Michael
var Position = {
...
clone: function(source, target) {
source = $(source);
target = $(target);

[scriptaculous] scroll down to show full auto completion list (w/ possible patch)
Hi everyone,
lately I''ve implemented an auto completion textfield at the bottom of a
form. I was a bit bothered by the fact that the user would potentially
need to scroll down in order to see all the options offered by the auto
completion. I couldn''t find any information on how to auto scroll to the
auto completion list with bulit-in functionality so I modified
