lattice: axis ticks, axis alignment and remove axis from plot
Hi there,
I'm a bit confused concerning the axis tck setting in the lattice
package as the ticks on left sided axis aren't
drawn at all with the following setting:
dados <- data.frame(varsep = factor(rep(1:2,10)),
i = runif(20))
library(lattice)
my.theme <- list(
axis.components = list(left = list(tck = 1, pad1 = 1, pad2 =
2), top = list(tck = 0, pad1

Overlay of barchart and xyplot
Hello R Folks,
I am new to R. I have been struggling to overlay a barchart with a
xyplot together on one plot but did not get this worked out. Any help
and idea are greatly appreciated.
I attached R scripts for barchart and xyplot below and also data I used.
What I am trying to do is just to put the barchart and xyplot together
on one plot.

Understanding padding in lattice
Dear R-users,
I am trying to understand what the different padding arguments in
trellis.par.set are exactly controlling the space around lattice plots.
I have used the following code as a basis for testing but it did not
really help me to visualize how the value of each argument changes the
margins and the plotting area. I guess a better way to visualize the
effects of these padding items

Relationships between png resolution, axis.text$cex trellis setting, and paddings
Dear R-users,
I was wondering if somebody could shed some light on the relationships
existing between the resolution of a png device, the axis.text$cex trellis
setting, and the paddings of the actual graph. In the following code, I
create a custom trellis theme that set (among other thing) axis.text$cex to
1 instead of the default 0.8. Then a lattice graph is created and exported
to three png

[lattice] Increase distance between tick labels and ticks in wireframe plot ("pad")
Hello,
I try to increase the distance between tick labels and ticks in a lattice wireframe plot. Here's a minimal example:
## Minimal example
x <- y <- z <- c(1,2,3)
df <- data.frame(x, y, z)
wireframe(z ~ x*y, df, scales = list(arrows = FALSE, col = "black", font = 1, tck=0.6))
I tried the axis.components option

centering axis labels in lattice
Hello,
I'm attempting to alter the location of text in my axis labels in
lattice plots and have been unsuccessful so far. For example, the
y-axis labels are always right-justified, but I would like them to be
horizontally centered.
Here's an example:
library(lattice);
# create fake dataset to plot
to.plot <- data.frame(
x = 1:5,
y = c("1\nAAA", "2\nBBB",

Lattice 3d coordinate transformation
Hello List!
I asked this before (with no solution), but maybe this time... I'm
trying to project a surface to the XY under a 3d cloud using lattice.
I can project contour lines following the code for fig 13.7 in
Deepayan Sarkar's "Lattice, Multivariate Data Visualization with R",
but it fails when I try to "color them in" using panel.levelplot.
?utilities.3d says there

Question about barplot: gridlines & value labels
Hello!
I promise I looked into help files before asking. Still cannot figure
it out. I think it's because I am totally confused what packages use
lettice, which use trellis, etc.
Sections 1 and 2 below produce the data and the data to plot. My
question is about barplot in Section 3. I am trying to:
1. add only horizontal gridlines and manipulate the type and color of
that line. tck = 1 is not

lattice: how to "center" a title?
Dear expeRts,
As you can see from this example...
trellis.device("pdf", width = 5, height = 5)
print(xyplot(0 ~ 0, main = "This title is not 'centered' for the human's eye", scales = list(alternating = c(1,1), tck = c(1,0))))
dev.off()
... the title does not seem to be "centered" for the human's eye [although it is centered when the plot (width)

lattice: how to "center" a subtitle?
Dear expeRts,
I recently asked for a real "centered" title (see, e.g., http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/e13/help/11/01/0135.html).
A nice solution (from Deepayan Sarkar) is to use "xlab.top" instead of "main":
library(lattice)
trellis.device("pdf")
print(xyplot(0 ~ 0, xlab.top = "This title is now 'centered' for the human's eye",

Adjust the distance between tick mark labels and axis
Hi all:
I've been trying to figure out a way to move the tick mark labels in my lattice plots closer to the the axes. I've tinkered with a lot of the "buffer" parameters (those listed by trellis.par.get()), but haven't had any luck. Any ideas?
Cheers.

Setting the colors of lines in a trellis plot...
With some help from those with expertise on this list, I managed to
produce a plot using trellis that looked like I wanted it to look.
Now, I need to take the same plot and make the lines on it color, but
I want to specify the color for the lines myself.
I've managed to make the key use the colors I want. I've managed to
make the symbols of the actual plot use the colors I want. But I

minor axis ticks in trellis graphics?
Dear R users,
I need to add minor axis ticks to my graph. In traditional R this is easily achievable by simply
adding a second axis with the minor ticks. But how to do that in trellis? I am already out of ideas.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Best regards,
Martin

xyplot tick marks and line thickness
Hello,
A made a xyplot using the lattice library in R (latest version).
The publisher of our paper has requested:
1. all tick marks should point inwards instead of outwards.
2. All lines should be thicker (lines, axes, boxes, etc. Everything). Lines is easy...I used: lwd=1.5 but what about the lines of the axes, and the lines that build up the plot itself?....?

problem with chron scales in lattice
I can't get the scales parameter in xyplot of lattice to work as I
expected. I'm using R-2.1.0 and lattice 0.11-8. There should be year
labels from 1992 to 2004 for the x axis in the plot below, but instead
only a few of them appear, and in the wrong spots, as if the coordinate
system has changed after finishing with the panel function.

Altering the cube around a wireframe plot.
I'm trying to create a 3D plot using wireframe with certain parts removed. I would like to get rid of the part of the outer cube that crosses over the plot leaving the back two walls and the axes. It would also be useful to put lines in the plot separate from the wireframe call. I've looked through the documentation and have not been able to find such a request. Here is my code

How to generate 'minor' ticks in lattice (qqmath)
Dear group,
I tried to generate labels for every second tick in lattice (qqmath).
Version: 0.14-16
Date: 2006/12/01
R version 2.4.1 (2006-12-18)
An example:
library(lattice)
numy=100
y=runif(numy,min=0,max=1)
sig=0.05
numsig=length(which(y<sig))
tck.no=11 # number of ticks
tcks=1:tck.no
labl=as.character(0.1*tcks-0.1) # label for all ticks
labl[seq(2,tck.no-1,2)]="" # delete

Hi,
in the introduction to R, you can find the following sentence in the par()
chapter:
"Use tck=0.01 and mgp=c(1,-1.5,0) for internal tick marks."
I thought that's nice, because I wanted to have tick marks and tick labels
inside and the axis title outside.
But:
