FW: boot fails on some system
If everything looks good on stick (active partition, partition ids,
etc), but one computer happilly boots and the other doesn't, obviously
the non-booting one doesn't like the mbr or the partitioning.
For the mbr liking:
The first 440 bytes can be any "normal" mbr. First take a backup of
the one you have on the USB stick/disk now with "dd if=/dev/sdx bs=440

Dear All
I have a PCBSD machine with /media shared using samba.
Any microsoft clients can successfully connect to /media and browse directories I have created there.
When I plug in a usb device, I mount it into /media eg: one labelled "PENDRIVE" becomes /media/PENDRIVE
Some clients can successfully read /media/PENDRIVE, others cannot. Although the clients that cannot view the

USB bootable (using syslinux)
Hello!
I just started using Linux and I like the possibilities it offers.
I'm using Suse Linux (no MS Windows installed at all).
I also discovered that syslinux is capable of making a USB pendrive bootable (with graphic menus).
This is very nice.
Since I'm a Windows user (up until now), I have some questions:
1 - I already downloaded syslinux 3.82
How do I install it on my pen drive

Help With Installation to USB Stick
Recently, I was able to create a workable Centos 4.4 "Live USB" on my 1G Lexar Firefly pendrive using the steps in http://linux.web.psi.ch/livecd/usbdisk.html. At the moment, it is doing its job, so I probably won't focus too much more on it. One thing that is annoying, although doesn't cause a problem is that on powerdown and reboot, the cd rom drive ejects - of course, there

I am wanting the installation to take place on sda and the driver disk

extlinux: usb for multiples machines
Hi!
I installed Debian in a pendrive and I used extlinux. I need a boot
for multiples machines. When I use the config file below, my pendrive
works fine:
DEFAULT linux
LABEL linux
KERNEL ../vmlinuz
APPEND ro root=/dev/sda1 initrd=../initrd
But I need a boot for any machine. Then, I tried it:
APPEND ro initrd=../initrd
but the boot stops after discover the correct location of the root

Multiboot pendrive with GPT - a tricky solution which could improve syslinux behavior
Hello!
I'm posting some experiences with GRUB0/1 + sys/extlinux + MBR/GPT in a
pendrive with 15 partitions. This could be helpful improving
sys/extlinux.
I did make a bootable pendrive with 14 distros using a GPT partition
table and a tricky solution to let sys/extlinux boot from every
partition chainloaded from GRUB (GRUB0 or GRUB1).
Having a MBR schema, sys/extlinux can't be

Deletion of destination files
Hi to all rsync users.
rsync's `--delete' option works fine in the following example: I'm sending all
the content of /home/rodolfo from machine1 to /home/rodolfo in machine2:
$ rsync --dry-run -vrtul --delete --exclude='/.*' . 192.168.0.2:/home/rodolfo
, and --delete works perfectly. Instead, in this other example:
$ rsync --dry-run -vrt --delete --modify-window=1 file1

Syslinux on USB not seeing any files
I've got a bootable USB pendrive with Syslinux 3.72, and while it
usually works, there are a few computers, where I get the syslinux
prompt, but it neither loads the configuration file, nor I'm able to
boot anything. The only message I get on screen (apart from boot:) is
"Could not find kernel image: linux".
The configuration (and kernels) are in syslinux directory, but even

Linux boot hangs after/during read of initrd.img
Precis: I?m trying to debug a problem with CentOS7 failing to install from an ISO written to a USB pendrive ? anyone got suggestions?
What works ? installing on a modern, ?standard PC?; the pendrive image boots and installs as I expect
What does not work ? same pendrive booting in an ATCA blade. What I?ve tried is?
1. Boot the standard CentOS7 minimal image. This seems to start but then

Splitting data
I want to implement the following algorithm in R:
I want to split my data, use a t test to compare both means of the groups to see if they significantly differ from each other. If this is a yes (p < alpha) I want to split again (into 4 groups) and do the same procedure twice, and stop otherwise (here the problem arises). As a final result I would have different groups of data.
I made some

Wine doesn't write in the USB pendrive
Hi, Everybody.
I have tried to update Portable Firefox to the last version (v. 9) at home, in order I could get the latest one to use also at Office (where I don't have Administrator rights, neither can install Firefox 'natively'...); however, after reinstalling Wine 32 in my personal machine (running Mageia), Wine doesn't recognize the USB Pendrive ans 'writeable', then

[PATCH] ocfs2: Prevent mount with "-o acl" if acl isn't supported.
Currently, if we don't enable CONFIG_OCFS2_FS_POSIX_ACL, ocfs2
will not support acl. That is OK.
But in the following case:
1. kernel isn't built to support acl.
2. mount -t ocfs2 -o acl /dev/sdx /mnt/ocfs2.
It sucesses. And what's more, if I do "mount|grep sdx" will get
/dev/sdx on /mnt/ocfs2 type ocfs2 (rw,acl,heartbeat=none)
So a normal user will just think acl now is ok

Power Analysis
I am trying to do a power analysis to get the number of replicas per
treatment.
If I try to get the power it works just fine:
setn=c(2,3)
sdx=c(1.19,4.35)
power.t.test(n = setn, delta = 13.5, sd = sdx, sig.level = 0.05,power =
NULL)
If I go the other way to obtain the "n" I have problems.
sdx=c(1.19,4.35)
pow=c(.8,.8)
power.t.test(n = NULL, delta = 13.5, sd = sdx, sig.level = 0.05,
