hackish error handling
I''ve got a block of code that''s turning out.. well - just plain ugly. So i know I must not be doing it the Ruby way. The main problem I''m having is in dealing with handling errors - and just not finding much Rails documentation that gives a deeper understanding of how to handle errors in Rails (outside of several docs on the catch-all''s) the main method

can Samba 2.2 join Windows 2003 R2 DC?
I have a Solaris 8 box with very old Samba 2.2.8a. It would be very convenient to join a Windows Domain with a 2003 R2 DC. (saving about 1 month of bureaucratic busy work - replacing the server) I've followed the docs on joining a Windows 2K AD, but no success: [root at box samba-2.2.8a]# smbpasswd -D 2 -j FOO -U me added interface ip=10.1.4.31 bcast=10.1.5.255 nmask=255.255.254.0

Rails 2.1.2 bug in include on has_many?
In my continued efforts to port my rails 1.x app to Rails 2.1.2, I keep running into what appear to be ActiveRecord bugs. I am using an :include on a :has_many definition: class Request < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :service_types, :order=>''service_types.id ASC'', :include=>:service_response [...] There''s no reason this wouldn''t be supported in

fedex tracking
I''ve been using the Business::FedEx::DirectConnect perl module to track and ship packages via FedEx for awhile now. I''m wanting to convert some of this functionality over to ROR, mostly just the package tracking part. Has anyone successfully tracked a package using the Shipping API out on RubyForge? It seems like the functionality is there since it''s just another

HABTM: deleting records based on attributes
Hello All, I am new to ROR, and can''t seem to get HABTM to cooperate entirely... however I might be abusing it! Before I try a different strategy I thought I''d ask here and see if I''m missing something simple. So say Projects and Companies are related. Projects can have multiple Companies, and Companies can be on multiple Projects. But, the same Company can also

Ruby Shipping
To accompany the Payment library (http://payment.rufy.com/), I have created the shipping library that connects APIs for various shippers like UPS and FedEx. It is available as a ruby gem: gem install shipping or from rubyforge http://rubyforge.org/projects/shipping There is going to be some data that will persist for all shipments. For example, you will not want to repeat the fedex account

Manually passing date for date_select
I''m in the position where I want to redirect_to a form and populate a few of the values to make things easier on the user (say, if I know the user is going to use the form 3 times but some of the data will remain the same). I accomplish it like this: def add @inventory = Inventory.new(params[:inventory]) end And then, somewhere else... redirect to :action => :add,

OT: UPS battery vendor, cont'd
Here's the state of my search: BatteriesPlus is... odd. The corporate site, and after a phone call, tell me they don't do GSA, but some of their franchises do. I called the local one, and they do. However, the only RBC 43 they offer, I might as well buy direct from APC, at well over $300 for the set. Battery Sharks, and Apex, don't do GSA... but they *do* offer replacements for about

SATA adapter recommendation
I have an old computer running CentOS 5. I need to add an SATA drive to it, but it doesn't have any ports, so I need an add-on card. The board only has a 32-bit PCI slot. Any recommendations on cards/brands that work well with CentOS? I don't need any raid capabilities, I just need a couple of SATA connections. Thanks, -- Bowie
