xls to csv conversion via WinXP's context menu?
Frequently I need to convert a .xls to a .csv (for import into R) and I do this by opening the file in excel and saving it as a csv. I would rather do this using WinXP's context menu (right click the xls, choose "convert to csv") but I don't know of a utility that does this. Any ideas? Thanks, Mark

OT: .doc,.xls,.pdf,.ppt (etc.) string parser/indexers
Does anyone have experience with linux tools to parse the text from common non-text file formats for searching? I'm trying to use the kinosearch add-on for twiki which is fine as far as the search goes, but it takes forever to generate the index. It uses xpdf to extract strings from pdf's, antiword for .doc, and since it is perl, the Spreadsheet::ParseExcel module for .xls. Some

My installation is R version 2.4.0 on Mac OS X version 10.4.8 (the latest release in both cases). I've recently had to restore my hard drive after a crash, and fear that this may have screwed up my Perl installation slightly. Whenever I run the read.xls function from library(gtools) I get the following errors: ###################### > file =

gdata read.xls() values format problem
Dear All, When I use read.xls() in gdata package to read xls files, I noticed an issue and couldn't find any solutions after I serched all previous posts. In the excel file, the number value, for example, is actually 2.3456789 but formatted as 2.3 (Format Cells ---> Decimal places:1). After I use read.xls() to import the excel file, I found that, in R, this number is read as the formatted

Weird read.xls behavior
Dear list, I used read.xls to read in an excel file, which has both character and numeric columns. Everything seems fine except in the last column, I have this character value "ng/ml". When reading in, read.xls seems to add a space at the end of it, became "ng/ml ". How can I prevent read.xls doing so? Thanks. >read.xls(data, header=T, as.is=T) Jun [[alternative HTML

read.xls question
I'm an R newbie and had a question about the read.xls function. I've heard that this is often not a reliable function to use for importing data. However, I have created numerous xls files which contain information about voter turnout and macroeconomic indicators in India. I'm writing a paper on the relationship between economic growth and voter turnout. This is the command I use:
