Rownames are always character?
Gurus,
Can I rely on the rownames() function, when applied to a matrix,
always returning either NULL or an object of type character? It
seems that row names can be entered as integers, but as of now
(R 2.4.1 on Windows) the function returns character vectors, not
numbers (which is my desired result).
I am using elements of the returned vector to index the matrix.

[PATCH] minor suggestions for R-ints manual
Attached is a patch with minor suggestions for the R-ints manual at
r64048. The most substantial change is the following:
The top layer comprises the graphics subsystems. Although there is
-provision for 24 subsystems, after 6 years only two exist, `base' and
+provision for 24 subsystems, since 2001 only two exist, `base' and
`grid'.
Is the year 2001 correct? I base it on the date

programming question
Dear list,
I have a vector of numbers, let's say:
myvec <- c(2, 8, 24, 26, 51, 57, 58, 78, 219)
My task is to reduce this vector to non-reducible numbers; small numbers can
cross-out some of the larger ones, based on a function let's say called
reduce()
If I apply the function to the first element 2, my vector gets shorted to:
> (myvec <- reduce(myvec[1]))
[1] 2 24 51

Dear R-devs,
Below is a small example of what I am trying to achieve, that is trivial in
R and I would like to learn how to do in C, for very large matrices:
> (mymat <- matrix(c(1,0,0,2,2,1), nrow = 2))

And I would like to produce:

How to put given values in lower triangle of splom-plot?
Dear R-experts,
I have found a splom-modification online which is given below. This
works perfectly, but I would like to have a matrix of given
correlation values to be used in the lower triangular part
(lower.panel) of the splom-plot instead of calculated correlation

Yes, that’s what I thought. I’ve also checked the binary downloads for OS X from llvm.org <http://llvm.org/> and get the same broken code from both the 3.5.2 and 3.6.0 releases.

I noticed something surprising (in R 2.2.1 on WinXP)
According to the documentation, rownames and colnames are character vectors.
Assigning a vector of class POSIXct or POSIXlt as rownames or colnames
therefore is not strictly according to the rules.
In some cases, R performs a reasonable typecast, but in some other cases
where the same typecast also would be possible, it does not.

I was wondering whether there has ever been an update on the rownames and
colnames behaviour as described by Eric below?
I still get the same behaviour, exactly as described by Eric, on my WinXP
installation of R-2.3.0. I also posted a message to r-help on Friday but

I'm having trouble getting ffdfindexget to work right in Windows. Even the
most trivial of examples gives me problems.

Hi R-users,
To automate the creation of scripts, I converted the code (example below) into a character string and wrote the object to a file:

jump in sequence
Dear list,
This should be a simple one, I just cannot see it.
I need to generate a sequence of the form:
4 5 6 13 14 15 22 23 24
That is: starting with 4, make a 3 numbers sequence, jump 6, then another 3
and so on.
I can create a whole vector with:
myvec <- rep(rep(c(F, T, F), rep(3, 3)), 3)
Then see which are TRUE:
which(myvec)
[1] 4 5 6 13 14 15 22 23 24

How to put text outside an xyplot?
Dear R-users,
I have a plot created with the code below. I tried to put some text to the right of the color key. I worked with grid.text and also viewport(), but couldn't achieve this. I know this should be simple, but I just couldn't figure out how to do it. How does this work?
