[HW] Do the HDD cages in rack mount chassis indicate visual/audio HDD failure?
I have no personal experience with rack mount chassis. >From the past postings, I reckon there are members, in this list, who have experience in rack mount setups and would like get their advice. To reduce the H/W cost, I am considering Linux mdadm RAID10 on a 2U chassis. I would appreciate clarification on the following: In rack mount chassis, do the cages that house the hard disks have

eSATA drive enclosure of a full PC?
HI All, I have a dilemma and I would appreciate advice 1. Get a good size case, mobo, processor, etc and put 8 hard drives it in and RAID them. (yes an 8 port SATA mobo). Running CentOS. or 2. Get an eSATA enclosure that has room for 8 or 10 drives and just connect it to box? I know that RAID is not a full proof backup, but I am looking for a solution to store all of my data, projects, music,

disk I/O problems and Solutions
Hey folks, CentOS / PostgreSQL shop over here. I'm hitting 3 of my favorite lists with this, so here's hoping that the BCC trick is the right way to do it :-) We've just discovered thanks to a new Munin plugin http://blogs.amd.co.at/robe/2008/12/graphing-linux-disk-io-statistics-with-munin.html that our production DB is completely maxing out in I/O for about a 3 hour stretch from

CentOS 7: software RAID 5 array with 4 disks and no spares?
Hi, I just replaced Slackware64 14.1 running on my office's HP Proliant Microserver with a fresh installation of CentOS 7. The server has 4 x 250 GB disks. Every disk is configured like this : * 200 MB /dev/sdX1 for /boot * 4 GB /dev/sdX2 for swap * 248 GB /dev/sdX3 for / There are supposed to be no spare devices. /boot and swap are all supposed to be assembled in RAID level 1 across

RAID benchmarks
We (a small college with about 3000 active accounts) are currently in the process of moving from UW IMAP running on linux to dovecot running on a cluster of 3 or 4 new faster Linux machines. (Initially using perdition to split the load.) As we are building and designing the system, I'm attempting to take (or find) benchmarks everywhere I can in order to make informed decisions and so

setting up CentOS 5 with Raid10
I would like to set up CentOS on 4 SATA hard drives that I would like to configure in RAID10. I read somewhere that Raid10 support is in the latest kernel, but I can't seem to get anaconda to let me create it. I only see raid 0, 1, 5, and 6. Even when I tried to set up raid5 or raid1, it would not let me put the /boot partition on it, and I though that this was now possible. Is it

Hot swap SATA?
Should it be possible to hot-swap SATA drives with Centos5? It doesn't seem to work on my system. Removing an unmounted drive locked the system up, and leaving one out at bootup makes the devices change names and keeps grub from finding /boot on a scsi drive that is shifted up. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

Highly Performance and Availability
Hello everyone, I am currently running Dovecot as a high performance solution to a particular kind of problem. My userbase is small, but it murders email servers. The volume is moderate, but message retention requirements are stringent, to put it nicely. Many users receive a high volume of email traffic, but want to keep every message, and *search* them. This produces mail accounts up to

Raid5 issues
So when I couldn't get the raid10 to work, I decided to do raid5. Everything installed and looked good. I left it overnight to rebuild the array, and when I came in this morning, everything was frozen. Upon reboot, it said that 2 of the 4 devices for the raid5 array failed. Luckily, I didn't have any data on it, but how do I know that the same thing won't happen when I have

raid 5 install
Hello list. The next days we are going to install Centos 7 on a new server, with 4*3Tb sata hdd as raid-5. We will use the graphical interface to install and set up raid. Do I have to consider anything before installation, because the disks are very large? Does the graphical use the parted to set/format the raid? I hope the above make sense. Thank you in advance. Best practices?
Suppose I start building nodes with (say) 24 drives each in them. Would the standard/recommended approach be to make each drive its own filesystem, and export 24 separate bricks, server1:/data1 .. server1:/data24 ? Making a distributed replicated volume between this and another server would then have to list all 48 drives individually. At the other extreme, I could put all 24 drives into some

RAID10
Hi All, I am looking at ZFS and I get that they call it RAIDZ which is similar to RAID 5, but what about RAID 10? Isn''t a RAID 10 setup better for data protection? So if I have 8 x 1.5tb drives, wouldn''t I: - mirror drive 1 and 5 - mirror drive 2 and 6 - mirror drive 3 and 7 - mirror drive 4 and 8 Then stripe 1,2,3,4 Then stripe 5,6,7,8 How does one do this with ZFS?

RAID options for Gluster
I think this discussion probably came up here already but I couldn't find much on the archives. Would you able to comment or correct whatever might look wrong. What options people think is more adequate to use with Gluster in terms of RAID underneath and a good balance between cost, usable space and performance. I have thought about two main options with its Pros and Cons No RAID (individual
