Manage of firewall.
Hello,
I see manage of firewall in CentOS (called security), and seems
difficult to manage, not enough powerful.
I am searching a middle term between scripts of iptables to manage and
Security manager of CentOS. I know FireStarter, another similar?

How should I create a repo on Centos 2.1?
I tracked down a createrepo rpm "for RHL 7.x, AS 2.1" etc (hosted by
Dag), but it's uninstallable.
Eventually I managed to create an rpm from the source (actually, that's
fairly easy when onw knows to say "python2"), but python-urlgrabber has
completely defeated me.
According to Dag, the problem is that "upstream" doesn't see the need to

Any compelling reasons to upgrade to 5
Just popped back on the list because I was curious about this. I've read
the information about virtualization and other new features. I'm just
wondering (as someone who installed CentOS 2 years ago and basically
hasn't thought much about it my OS other than using it since then) if any
piece of it except for virtualization got updated significantly enough to
consider an upgrade. My

Linux on a Thinkpad R40
I've just acquired a use IBM Thinkpad R40 model 2722-GDM.
I'm contemplating what to run on it, and longer-term the likely
candidates are:
Centos 5
SLE{D,S} 10
OpenSUSE 10.2
Kubuntu - the latest.
Kubuntu - Long Life (aka 6.04, Dapper, ...)
I've booted Knoppix 4 in it and most seems well, including the Atheros
Wireless card Windows can't find.

LDAP Server configs
Hi Guys,
I'm creating an ldap server for my network. I'm quite confuse about /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/openldap/ldap.conf files. What are the difference of those two config files? Thanks!
cheers,

New lists
Think of this as a motion as one might move at a meeting. Discussion and
refinement are in order.
I don't understand the current rationale for a single CentOS users'
list; probably in times past it was sensible, but I think the time has
come for splitting the list by release.
I'm speaking from my own perspective, but I'm sure others have similar
stories. How many users use

Does anyone use VMWare 4.5.2 on CentOS 4?
I'm trying to use my copy and whenever I reboot I have to reconfigure
everything again using vmware-config.pl. Any idea why I might have to do
this? Is there something about the way services are setup under CentOS 4
or something?

Anyone use a Rio Cali Sport with CentOS 4.2?
My wife does and here's the problem. It automatically mounts the flash
memory of the player. But it doesn't mount the SD card slot. I used Ubuntu
5.10 recently and it mounted both of them. Both as separate USB sticks.
How do I get CentOS to do the same thing? Or can it not discern that two
USB flash devices are plugged in?

Easy way to reject all incoming packets except from certain IPs?
Is there an easy way to reject all incoming packets except those that come
from certain IPs? I can't find any way via iptables or via the GUI provided
with CentOS (or another GUI for CentOS) without having to resort to
Shorewall. It's fine if the answer is "go with Shorewall". I just didn't
want to have to become a Shorewall expert for this really small task.
Any help/advice

Multi-button mice and Linux?
Does anyone here use a multi-button (as in more than 2) mouse with Linux?
How well supported are they? I've had to get one recently for work. I was
diagnosed with CTS and I now wear braces and use a wireless Intellimouse.
Works great at work with Windows, but I'm unsure how much, if any support
there is for Linux. Anyone have experience with this?

Trying to control the torrent of spam...
Someone got ahold of my information (actually, I know who they are -
t2net.net - just not how to get back at them) and now I'm getting 4
phone calls a week upwards of 20 spams a day.
I'm trying to put an end to the spam at least and the built-in stuff for
Evolution isn't working as well as it should I did some Googling on
procmail and fetchmail and spamassassin config files and much

New to CentOS, is this a safe bet?
I know this may be a stupid place to ask, but I have to ask. I'm looking
for a new Linux distro to use and support. I've been a loyal purchaser
of SuSE Linux Pro for the last 3 years. I've paid my $90 loyally, in
part because I wanted money to actually go to someone working on OSS,
but also because I thought it was a good bargain, to get a quality,
tested distro for that cost.

Removing custom kernels?
Is this possible. I did my first one yesterday in order to get my iPod
mini to work with the EL kernel. It worked well. Everything went
smoothly, but I don't like what I named it. So I'd like to take one more
shot at it. If I do, is there a way to remove the old one cleanly?
Modules and everything.
Also, if do recompile the kernel again, do I need fresh source, or can I
just do a make

Thanks for all the help and advice
I went with CentOS today and I couldn't be happier. I'm definitely
excited to be part of this community.
Now I just have to remember (after years of using the default SuSE
install of Java/Ant/Tomcat/Eclipse, etc.) where the best place to put my
Java apps is.

Sound problems with CentOS
Has anyone experienced this before? This happened to me even under CentOS
4.x. But basically what happens is that when I play MP3s, whatever the
right speaker crackles at higher volume. And it's always that speaker and
only that speaker. If I turn the balance to the other speaker I have no
problems. So it feels like it might be a mixer issue. I use Alsa, of
course, as that's what the

Anyone use fetchmail for multiple users?
Trying to figure out how to configure it for multiple users. By default
CentOS doesn't have a daemon setup if you want to do this.

Can someone point me in the direction of a quick postfix/fetchmail setup example?
I need to start doing some email filtering. Can someone point me in the
direction of how to do this if they have a link handy? If not I'll Google
anyway, but I thought I'd ask just in case.

wireless card for CentOS
Hi,
I'll need to buy a new wireless card. I need a recommendation for
PCMCIA wireless card that simply works with CentOS out of the box.
By "works out of the box", I mean that it doesn't need ndis wrapper
(or whatever it is called), kernel hacks, or whatever.
Thanks

Running SELinux necessary for the average user?
I'm wondering because it seems to be slowing my machine down considerably
under CentOS 5. Especially the daemon they include to monitor SELinux and
the program that attaches to it. I tried opening this earlier and it just
sat there spinning.
I want the knowledge that my machine is secure and safe. But I'm wondering
if the price is worth it. Is it necessary for my machine to be fairly

Anyone know why this wouldn't be valid mbox format?
Trying to get my wife's emails out of a proprietary format and into mbox
for use on our local box. Doing some major file munging. In a test email
