Getting confused with two versions of R‏‏
Hi there, I used to run R 2.10 on Ubunutu 10.04, and tried to install R 2.11 from the source at the same time.It seems that doing the second installation, I have messed up with some files or system paths, resulting in not being able to use either version of R on my system. I get the following message in terminal, whenever I try to run R now: /usr/local/bin/R: line 227:

ubuntu installation: can't find ldpaths
I'm trying to install R under Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy; Linux 2.6.22-15-generic x86_64). Following the instructions at http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/README, I installed r-base, r-base-core, and r-base-dev without any problems. When I open R, however, I get the message "Can't open /usr/lib64/R/etc/ldpaths". That file is linked to /etc/R/ldpaths, which doesn't exist

R string comparisons may vary with platform (plain text)
A colleague?s R program behaved differently when I ran it, and we thought we traced it probably to different results from string comparisons as below, with different R versions. However the platforms also differed. A friend ran it on a few machines and found that the comparison behavior didn?t correlate with R version, but rather with platform. I wonder if you?ve seen this. If it?s not some

Problem loading Matrix package in Ubuntu R 2.8.0
Dear List: I'm having the same problem that was reported recently. The latest version of R cannot load the Matrix package, even though it is installed and readable. I've read the archive files for this list and tried the suggested solutions (e.g., removing/uninstalling the Matrix package and reinstalling it). Nothing has worked so far. Does anybody have advice of what I could try next?

R 2.11.0 for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on CRAN
Dear Ubunutu R users, Vincent Goulet and myself would like to announce the availability of R 2.11.0 for Ubuntu's latest release, Lucid Lynx. The packages should be on or arriving soon to your favorite mirror. R 2.11.0 packages also exist on CRAN for all Ubuntu releases going back to hardy. As Johannes Ranke pointed out for the Debian release, R packages installed under R < 2.10.0

simplify if statement in R ?
I found a form of the if statement that works but it is very long. I'm attempting to check the value of of two different variables to see if they evaluate to either of two different values, which will result in a division by 0 in the final equation. This first if statement works for me _______ if ((x0.trial01 == 0.0)||(x0.trial01 == npt01)||(x1.trial01 == 0.0)||(x1.trial01 == npt01))

When I try to install a package: install.packages("SPOT") it returns an error message: "Error in readRDS(file) : error reading from the connection". Also, when I try the command in R: update.packages(), it returns the same error message described previously. Any ideas? Regards, Monica [[alternative

Problem with LD_LIBRARY_PATH setting in ldpaths (PR#13637)
When using R on a linux machine (ubuntu 8.10) which DOES NOT have LD_LIBRARY_PATH set (I particularly have it NOT set because it causes problems), the script ldpaths will set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the R Lib path (in my case $R_HOME/lib:). The placement of the colon makes my system think that the directory "." is also on that lib path. This causes real problems when trying to run R

calculating mean of list components
I get a list object from an iterative function. I'm trying to figure out the most efficient way to calculate the mean of one element, across all components of the overall list. I've tried output <- mean (listobject[[1:5]]$element) to get the mean of "element" in the first five components? It doesn't like the $. I'm suspect one of the "apply" functions
