Effects fully display before effect
Why do effects that display an element (like Appear or Slide Down) start by
displaying the element for a split second and then make the element
disappear?

Google/Netflix Like Tooltips
I need to have a toolip-like object which has dynamic content in it. I
plan on using scriptaculous with an ajax call to retrieve the content,
but I would like to make the popup/tooltip/balloon text look as nice as
possible. Does anyone have any examples or anything useful to create a
popup like the ones that Google and Netflix have? I''d like to have one

Attaching event observers to a series of elements - best practice?
Hi all,
New member here. I''ve been working with Prototype for a while, and I
love it. However, there''s one thing I still can''t figure out.
Let''s say I have an array of objects, representing contacts in an
address book:
var contacts = [
{ id: 1, firstName: "Bob", lastName: "Smith" },
{ id: 2, firstName: "Sue", lastName:

Broswer Based Game
Hello all,
In order to learn Ruby on Rails (I''ve done the tutorials) I''ve decided
to sit down and try to create a broswer based game. I''m a bit lost on
where to start.
Does anyone have an suggestions? Would anyone be willing to help? I.e.
I get stuck with any small bit of code you can give me a heads up, or
tell me where I''m going wrong?
Thanks guys.

whatever happend to unobtrusive javascript in Rails ?
Don''t get me wrong, JavaScript/Ajax helpers in Rails are a huge
timesaver and they have helped me to finally overcome my irrational
aversion to js libraries like prototype and such. However, all this
goodness seems to come at quiet a price. The resulting code is
littered with inline JS, including ubiquitous script tags and onload
attributes etc.. It seems that just when i found

javascript woes with radio button groups
Ok! So I have this survey project I''m working on where there are a list of
questions but only one shows up at a time.
That part''s easy. And, it is fully functional as we speak (and I think even
''live'') however.....
My boss wants to be able to have the survey go to the next question when a
user selects an answer. This part is easy.. except.....

Rich Text Editor
I know I saw something a while back about a simple Rich Text Editor; did
that go anywhere? I''d love to see something as simple as the one google uses
in gmail. If not, I''ll get started on it :-D.

EventPublisher (contribution)
I got a lot of great help yesterday on my calendar questions. Makes me
want to post another contribution :-)
This one is called EventPublisher. This was packaged also in Marco
Jaeger''s recent post with his excellent Dialogs (a la Windows), but now
I''ll post it by itself in case someone missed it, and also give a little
explanation for ya''ll.

Problem passing event object
Hi all,
I''m having a problem with an Ajax.Request. I can''t figure out how I
can pass an event (an onclick on a checkbox) which causes the Ajax
Request, to be recognized in an onSuccess function. Here''s my
simplified code:
var RequiredField = Class.create();
RequiredField.prototype = {
initialize: function(chkbox) {
this.chkbox = chkbox;
this.chkbox.onclick =

Element.addMethods functions swallowing exceptions (IE6 + 7)
IE6 and IE7 are not correctly handling the ''throw'' command for
functions attached to Element via Element.addMethods. Firefox and
Safari are fine.
See the example below.
For IE6: functions called with no attributes (ie: funcName())
correctly handle thrown errors. Funcions called with attributes (ie:
funcName("foo")) will respond to the throw command and pass execution

The default browser for the html help system is not set correctly for OS X.
This makes the html help work great on OS X:

> help.start()
"open" is an OS X launcher app that inspects a file and launches it with the

Yahoo!-like Event object emulation/abstraction in Prototype?
Hi,
I was reading about the Yahoo! library recently and was really
excited by the idea that I wouldn''t have to branch for IE in my
event handlers. Is there any chance that such abstraction will come
to Prototype?
Thanks,
Sam

Waiting For Completion
I am writing an application that will display a series of images.
When a link is clicked the images will fade away, and new images will
fade in.
I am starting by trying to simply fade the images out then back in
through a function:
function ChangeImage() {
Effect.BlindDown(''MyElement'',{duration:0.5});
Effect.BlindUp(''MyElement'',{duration:0.5});
}

{ afterfinish }
Hi,
1. can someone give me an example usage of { afterfinish: }? I tried several
ways and just can''t get it. I was trying to deploy an effect after another
one had finished and just couldn''t do it.
Effect.dropout (myElement, {afterfinish: function(element) {
Effect.Appear(anotherElement); } } );
a) why doesn''t this work?
b) what''s the element argument for?

Event.observe(myelement, ''click'', myfunc.bindAsEventListener());
That might fix your wagon.

sortables and onClick events firing
I have a page that I have been tasked with adding sortable support to, and
the div elements that are being dragged have a <a href> in them with an
onClick handler that opens a new window with a preview. Is there a way to
keep that onCLick from firing when a sortable is dropped?
