Peak Over Threshold values
Dear List I hope you can help me: I?ve got a dataframe (df) within which I am looking for Peak Over Threshold values as well as the length of the events. An event starts when walevel equals 5.8 and it should end when walevel equals the lower threshold value (5.35). I tried ?clusters (?)? from ?evd package?, and varied r (see example) but it did not work for all events (again

Discrepency between confidence intervals from t.test and computed manually -- why?
I am sure there is something simple here I am missing, so please bear with me. It concerns the computation of the confidence interval for a population mean. The data are 125 measurements of Cs137 radation, a sample data set from Davis "Statistics and Data Analysis in Geology" 3rd ed. (CROATRAD.TXT) ------------------ method 1: using textbook definitions: mean \pm se_mean * t-value mu

[PS] Two Way ANOVA
Ben, I would like to test the sulfur on the clover field, nitrogen on the clover field and then test for the presence of interaction. Sorry about the last email, seems it really screwed itself over, here it is again, hopefully nicer: Nitrogen(0) Nitrogen(20) Sulfur(0) 4.54 5.73 Sulfur(3) 4.64

means over factors in mlm terms
I'm trying to write a function to find the means over factors of the responses in a mlm (something I would do easily in SAS with PROC SUMMARY). The not-working stub of a function to do what I want is below, and my problem is that I don't know how to call aggregate (or some other function) in the context of terms in a linear model extracted from a lm/mlm object. means.mlm <-

Trouble pulling data from a messy ACII file...
Hi all, I am a new graduate student who is also new to R. I am ok with the basics, but the problem I am having right now seems beyond what I can do..so I am looking for advice. I am trying to pull data from flat ASCII files, but they do not have a "nice" structure so a simple "read.table" doesn't work. An example first half of a data file is below:

help for segmented package
Hi, I am trying to find m breakpoints of a linear regression model. I used the segmented package. It works fine for small number of predicators and breakpoints.(3 r.v. 3 points). However, my model has 14 variables it even would not work even for just one breakpoints!. The error message is always estimated breakpoints are out of range. Since my problem is time related problem. So I

Two Way ANOVA
Hi, I am using the: pcf.aov<-aov(meas~op+part, data=pcf.ex2), command to perform a two way ANOVA. When I save the: sumpcf<- summary.aov(pcf.aov), result of the summary.aov command in a variable I need to access the individual pieces of information in the summary. The summary appears to be a list and I am having a hard time finding a way to get at the information in the summary.

Specifying suitable PC to run R
If I am buying a PC where the most compute intensive task will be running R and I do not have unlimited resources what trade-offs should I make? Specifically should I go for 1 - more memory, or 2 - faster processor, or 3 - something else? If it makes a difference I shall be running Windows on it and I am thinking about getting a portable which I understand makes upgrading more difficult. Extra

writing to a fixed format (fortran) file
Could anyone help with what should be a simple task? I have data as a fixed format (fortran) table. I have no trouble getting it into R using read.table. Each column is separated by a space, including the first column that begins with a space, and aligned. It reads into R as if separated by tabs. However I want to manipulate two columns of data then write the results out into exactly the

HELP! Excel and R give me totally different regression results using the exact same data
Hallo, I am totally confused why Excel and R give me totally different regression results for the data below. If you know the solution, please enlighten me. In Excel I used LINEST() and Data>Data Analysis>Regression and both (fortunately) gave the same result. The coefficients were: /b0=1.16, b1=0.957, b2=0.024, R2=0.0027, adjusted R2=-0.017/ In R I used

reading json tables
I'm trying to read two data sets in json format from a single .js file. I've tried fromJSON() in both RJSONIOIO and RJSON packages, but they require that the lines be pre-parsed somehow in ways I don't understand. Can someone help? > wheat <- readLines("http://mbostock.github.com/protovis/ex/wheat.js") > str(wheat) chr [1:70] "var wheat = [" "

coxme frailty model standard errors?
Hello, I am running R 2.6.1 on windows xp I am trying to fit a cox proportional hazard model with a shared Gaussian frailty term using coxme My model is specified as: nofit1<-coxme(Surv(Age,cen1new)~ Sex+bo2+bo3,random=~1|isl,data=mydat) With x1-x3 being dummy variables, and isl being the community level variable with 4 levels. Does anyone know if there is a way to get the standard error

multiple plots problem
hello, i try to plot 3 graphs which have the same x.axis underneath each other. i'd like the plots to be aligned without margings between the boxes and draw a single x axis beneath the lowest plot. i managed to get the alignment by setting par(mar), but the middle box is stretched and i cant't figure out how to get around this. par(pin) was my guess, but this doesn't do the job

Crontab overwritten by Puppet
Hello folks.. I suddenly found the crontab on one of my puppet clients overwritten. It had many entries, including one created by Puppet. Suddenly during one run it was overwritten, keeping only the Puppet entry and removing everything else. Nothing changed between the previous runs and the one that re-created the crontab in terms of configuration. I''m running Puppet 2.7.6. Fri Jul

text(x,y,greek character)
Dear list, I would like to plot points with two types of labels, one at the data point (the name of the point) and another offset a bit with another factor which is either of the two greek characters alpha or beta.
