Somewhat OT: Specific SIP packets can cause ethernet controller reset
While not strictly Asterisk related this issue could certainly affect some of you: http://blog.krisk.org/2013/02/packets-of-death.html -- Kristian Kielhofner

Looking for a Rails AJAX gallery/tutorial
Hello everyone, Do any of you know of a downloadable Rails app that demonstrates all the bundled AJAX-iness in an impressive form? I''m looking for two things: - something I can show off to wow people with Rails'' built-in AJAX power, then show them the code that does the work and wow them again with the simplicity. In short, something that will impress potential customers, as

Stupid passwd tricks: User with blank GECOS can''t change passwd
I have discovered that a user who has a blank GECOS field in the passwd file under RedHat 4.0 (Colgate) is unable to change passwords. Running the passwd command goes like this: [user@host user]$ passwd Password: [entry of old passwd] New password: [entry of new passwd] [user@host user]$ echo $! 1 [user@host user]$ Setting the name field in the GECOS seems to solve this problem. Q on stupid video tricks
Hi, The good news is that if you use Virt-Manager running in a VM viewed through Virt-Manager, that VM can drill another level through to view VMs. The badish news is if that's a GUI desktop, the video for the VM-in-VM view ends up (at least for me) with some serious artifacts - particularly distortions largely involving vertical lines down through it. Okay, this is an odd case that hardly

stupid R tricks
Hi all, Just thought I'd post this (maybe) helpful tool I wrote. For people like me who are bad at keeping a clean environment, it's a time-saver. #simple command to get only one type of object in current environment lstype<-function(type='closure'){ inlist<-ls(.GlobalEnv) if (type=='function') type <-'closure'

Kernel Bug
I have a DB server running ext3 under fairly extreme load. The system is a Dell 2550 (Dual P-III 1Ghz with a gig of RAM) running RedHat 7.2 with the stock 2.4.7-10 kernel. Things have been swell for 95 days, but I just got bit: Linux 2.4.7-10smp #1 SMP Thu Sep 6 17:09:31 EDT 2001 i686 unknown [root@ root]# cat /root/oops.20020817 kernel BUG at journal.c:373! invalid operand: 0000 CPU: 1 EIP:

Tweaks for 0.2
I can make these changes tonight, but if somebody else could do it that would be swell too. 1) Validators currently do not work for the dumbest reason ever... the "Clone" method in wxRbValidator needs to be changed to: virtual wxObject* Clone() const; while in there, I think the validator methods need to be renamed to proper ''wxruby'' things ("validate"

OpenVPN on phones?
It's just come to my attention that newer phones from both Snom and Grandstream support OpenVPN. Is this a new trend or something? Since OpenVPN, in one swell foop, deals with both NAT issues and securing communications, I'd be very interested in hearing if other phone vendors were embracing OpenVPN as well. (Other VPN solutions are all well and good, but I really like the flexibility

Stupid tricks: preventable?
I just experienced something I'd rather not experience again. Using a SPA-841 SIP phone connected to our Asterisk server, someone dialed their own extension, answered, and then transferred the call using the phone's "XFER" soft key. This does a SIP REFER. Now, the phone has dropped out of the loop, and Asterisk has connected the two call legs into a loop, as far as I can tell.

Macbook DHCP issue.
Hi folks, A while ago I setup my macbook pro to run TINC to my linux box. It's worked just swell since April. The other day it just stopped working. The connection comes up and everything seems fine but I can't DHCP a correct address. I followed the old setup instructions that were located here: http://www.tinc-vpn.org/examples/macbook-install/ They seem to be gone now. When I try and

stupid user tricks with ices2: "No such file or directory" :P
Michael and Karl, Thanks for your replies. Sorry for confusing you with bad test info. The contents of playlist.txtthat I referred to in my earlier email did not match the log result I specified. However, I had ran the test with both a full and relative path in playlist.txt; "/home/john/Visitors.ogg" and "Visitors.ogg". Got it working, however. Tried playing a different ogg

How to properly bridge the network to CentOS under Parallels on a Macbook Pro?
Hi all, I have recently acquired a Macbook Pro (sweet machine!) from my employer, and one of the tasks the machine has to do is to run a distributed software development platform (called Splice) under Linux. For this task, I have chosen the trusty CentOS 4.4, and I have it set up in Parallels. So far, so good. Now then, the network does work within CentOS, but I want to assign it a fixed

stupid user tricks with ices2: "No such file or directory" :P
I must be doing something really stupid. I've read the docs for icecast2 and ices2. Icecast2 is running fine; I can get stats.xml and see that it is running. When I run ices2, I get the following error in ices.log: ... [2005-12-07 05:37:51] INFO playlist-basic/playlist_basic_get_next_filename Loading playlist from file "/home/john/playlist.txt" [2005-12-07 05:37:51] WARN

ACD Labs 12.0 installs fine, runs fine for the first time
Hi there, I am a relative Linux newbie and due to my work I use ACD Labs 12.0. This is a free for academia NMR processing software available only for windows. I am running it through a Virtual XP machine but I wanted to see if it would run using Wine. The program installed fine, and when I started it for the first time everything was swell. At last I could run pretty much everything I need from

Experiences With NUT Eaton & Cyberpower UPS
I watched the recent discussions of "issues" with an Eaton Ellipse UPS with some interest. I use the US version of that UPS, the Ellipse Pro 1500 in my case. I had not encountered many of the issues recounted in those discussions. The Login Failure message is not unique to that UPS as I have seen it with my Cyberpower units. The polling setting also had me wondering as I have never had

New AstLinux Branch: RT PREEMPT ("realtime" Linux) - Looking for testers
Hello everyone, Now that astlinux-trunk has been coming along very nicely, I thought I would try to add support for hard realtime capabilities to AstLinux. If everything works (and there are no problems with zaptel), with a little tweaking this should improve the audio quality on systems with high loads (and probably any system at that) - especially if it is finely tuned and has zaptel
