cpu usage high with windows change dir / winDialogString (PR#11045)
Good afternoon,
This is possibly a windows only bug, definitely of comparatively low
importance - but for the sake of completeness here we go. I've
searched http://bugs.R-project.org/ etc., but can find no mention.
For RGui.exe, the CPU usage goes to 100% for certain dialog boxes for
the duration that the dialog box is visible, e.g.

need for speed on grid.rect
When I use grid.rect to print a multi-coloured grid, it is incredibly slow compared to a single colour grid, or even a two colour grid.
I've set out some simplified examples below. This is something I run literally thousands of times a day, so I would greatly appreciate any hints on how I might improve the speed???

Dear useRs,
Why are the rotated blue and yellow boxes in the example below clipped outside of 6 x 6 inch window in the middle of the page?? Where does the 6 x 6 inch window come from? I would like to make use of the entire page.

"Too many raster images" in devPS.c
Hi,
I am finding the recently added [1] functionality of embedding raster
images into plots on R devices very useful! Thanks to Paul Murrell and
others for providing that. I noted that in
https://svn.r-project.org/R/trunk/src/library/grDevices/src/devPS.c
a macro is defined: #define MAX_RASTERS 64, and consequently, I get

Saving long character variable to database saves timestamp instead
When saving a data frame with long character variable, approximately longer
than 30000 characters, to a text field in PostgreSQL, using RODBC on Windows
XP, I get a timestamp saved to the database instead. Is there any way to
extend the number of characters that a text variable can receive?
Here are the details of my case (simplified):
I'm using PostgreSQL to create a table

ggmap crash
Not sure if this is the right place to report this, but:
Am using ggmap to generate a map of a bounding box from 161
latitude/longitude pairs and the code crashes R (in ess). Data is at
http://analysis.d8u.us/~hdiwan/plotSource.csv and the code to read it
is below. I'm not sure if ess, emacs, ggmap, R, or my laptop is to
blame. Here's the code:

inconsistency/bug in recordPlot/replayPlot
Hey all,
I've run accross what seems to be a bug in the recordPlot/replayPlot
functionality (or at least the lack of a feature which seems pretty
reasonable to expect to be there)
When drawing to a file-based graphics device (I tested with png()), the
file resulting from calling replayPlot on a recordedplot object does not
contain an identical image to that captured by the same graphics

mclapply memory leak?
Dear R-devel,
I am running mclapply with many iterations over a function that modifies
nothing and makes no copies of anything. It is taking up a lot of memory,
so it seems to me like this is a bug. Should I post this to
bugs.r-project.org?
A minimal reproducible example can be obtained by first starting a memory
monitoring program such as htop, and then executing the following code

summary of lme4.0 model in package
Dear all,
My package has Depends: lme4.0 in the DESCRIPTION. I need to extract the fixed effect of a model and their standard errors. I use coef(summary(model)) inside a function to do that. Model is the output of a call to glmer() from the lme4.0 package.
coef(summary(model)) throws an error: $ operator is invalid for atomic vectors
I have tracked it down to a problem with summary(model)

plus/minus +/- in factor; not plotmath not expression
I want to put the "plus or minus" symbol into a character variable, so that this can be turned into a factor and be displayed in the "strip" of a faceted ggplot2 plot.
A very nice solution, thanks to Professor Ripley's post of Nov 16, 2008; 3:13pm, visible at http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/Symbols-to-use-in-text-td874239.html and subsequently
