dbinom and Catherine Loader
Hi Folks,
There has been past correspondence regarding Catherine Loader's
Bell Labs (oops, Lucent) paper
"Fast and Accurate Computation of Binomial Probabilities"
which gives the algorithm on which R's dbinom() is based.
The original URL given in the R documentation "?dbinom" is:

In principle a good idea, but I'm not sure the whereabouts of Catherine Loader are known at this point. Last peeps from her on the net seem to be about a decade old.

Binomial distribution & Catherine Loader's paper
Hi,
I've been trying, without success to find a copy of the paper, by Catherine
Loader, that describes the algorithn underlying the rbinom() and associated
functions. The title is "Fast and Accurate Computation of Binomial
Probabilities." All of the links to the paper that I've seen (including in
the R docs) lead nowhere (i.e. are 404). I've sent Dr. Loader several
emails,

r-ish ? how can i improve my code?
Hi Folks,
I'm trying to learn R. One of my intentions is to do some Monte-Carlo
type modelling of road "accidents".
Below, to simplify things, I've appended a little program which does a
'monte-carlo' type simulation. However, it is written in a way which
seems a bit un-natural in R. Could someone help me make this a bit more
R-ish please?
Or is there a

What about using the Wayback Machine archive ? The web archive should be
more stable than other links which also might disappear in the future.
E.g.

, which also links to an archived copy of the PDF.

package loading smooth.lf (LOCFIT), couldn't find functio n "smooth.lf"
The version of locfit on the web site mentioned apparently has been revised
by Prof. Loader, and is newer than the CRAN version that I have been
maintaining. If Prof. Loader is OK with it, I will take a look and see if I
can get the new version into CRAN-conforming form and upload to CRAN.
Meanwhile, make sure you're using the package from Prof. Loader's web page,

Moore-Penrose Generalized determinant?
Is there a function in R to calculate the generalized determinant of a
singular matrix? - similar to the ginv() used to compute the generalized
inverse.
I can't seem to find any R related posts at all.
Thanks in advance,

Hi everyone,
I hope I'm not repeating someone else, but I am having trouble with
my R installation on my MacBook with OS X Universal. I get this error

trivial spelling correction
Good evening,
Spotted a very minor spelling mistake in the source for the grep help.
And thanks to R-Core for all their work - it's a tribute to R-Core,
that these sort of "problems" are rare indeed.
Best regards,

Dear all,
Has anyone worked on coding for calculating Lyapunov Exponent for a time
series data? or any package is available for computing Lyapunov?
Please advice and many thanks in advance.

Netbios node type value WITHOUT wins server only WITH DNS server
Getting rid of netbios does not mean you should not configure it.
You "should" configure it.
And even if you disable WINS, LLMNR is still running, so you gained.. .. Nothing with disabling WINS.
Just in this case make sure your NETBIOS names obey the DNS rules and

data input strategy - lots of csv files
Good morning,
I have currently 63 .csv files most of which have lines which look like
01/06/05,23445
Though some files have two numbers beside each date. There are
missing values, and currently the longest file has 318 rows.
(merge() is losing the head and doing runaway memory allocation - but
thats another question - I'm still trying to pin that issue down and
make a small repeatable

Configuring two channels
Hi there,
Are you able to assist us to configure two channels on icecast?
We need to reconfigure icecast (our audio streaming server) to stream
multiple "mount" points, to include the two additional streams that a
digital radio app requires.
Thank you

Samba 3.0 AD usage problems
Dear all,
I downloaded samba3.0-alpha21 and followed each step in "ADS-HOWTO.txt".
But mapping a network directory from a Windows client failed (step 4:
Test your server setup).
(Succeeded in other steps.... Including step 5)
Only local users in the samba server can access the share folder.
(Please refer to the smb.conf listed below...)
And "#kadmin -p administrator" fails

cpu usage high with windows change dir / winDialogString (PR#11045)
Good afternoon,
This is possibly a windows only bug, definitely of comparatively low
importance - but for the sake of completeness here we go. I've
searched http://bugs.R-project.org/ etc., but can find no mention.
For RGui.exe, the CPU usage goes to 100% for certain dialog boxes for
the duration that the dialog box is visible, e.g.
* check CPU usage is low
* On the RGui.exe menu chose
