rsync'ing an rdiff-backup repository
I'm rsync'ing an rdiff-backup repository to a different machine and I have a few questions I'm hoping you guys can help me out with. Should I use --archive? Or maybe -rlD instead? Can I restrict an SSH key to rsync? I can do it with rdiff-backup with command="rdiff-backup --server" but I can't figure out how to do it with rsync. The rdiff-backup repository I'm

LVM and Backups
Hey there, I'm testing LVM snapshot to make backups and I've some questions about snapshot lvm. In my test case I have httpd, postgresql db and a dataset on a VM. Running a backup I follow this steps: 1) Stop httpd 2) Create lvm snapshot on the dataset 3) Backup database 4) restart httpd (to avoid more downtime) 5) mount the snapshot and execute backup 6) umount and remove the snapshot

Mailboxes are in Maildir format. Any good backup tips? Had success with version control?
I'm still pretty new to running a mail server, but one thing I've come to appreciate over the years is a good backup strategy. Since I have always run my own servers for practice and for personal use I don't have access to Enterprise backup solutions. Because of that I usually just fall back to scripts and tarballs and offload the content on a regular basis. Right now I'm

rdiff-backup update broken?
After the recent yum update to rdiff-backup-1.2.2-1.el5.rf rdiff-backup no longer works. I don't "speak" python so not sure what's going on. Here's a portion of what I'm seeing... # rdiff-backup /etc/ /backup/localhost/etc Exception '[Errno 34] Numerical result out of range' raised of class 'exceptions.IOError': File

[SOLVED] Re: Backup Suggestion on C7
I'm sure some people will tell me I'm doing it wrong but I always just use rsync for backups, automated in cron. I may be doing it wrong but it always works. Backup Suggestion on C7
I'm not a bacula expert, but have had 30+ years in the industry doing backups. I'm a little concerned about what you are planning. As I understand it you are going to be keeping just one copy of each machine on a disk attached to the server. This will help if you loose the running disks (though it is hardly backup in depth), but what happens if you loose the server due to fire, flood,

Hi list, I've solved my problem. I've understood some concepts. I've defined bacula-sd multiple devices with different Media Type and configured different storage directives in director. Backup Suggestion on C7
Hi list, I'm building a backup server for 3 hosts (1 workstation, 2 server). I will use bacula to perform backups. The backup is performed on disks (2 x 3TB on mdraid mirror) and for each hosts I've created a logical volume with related size. This 3 hosts have different data size with different disk change rate. Each host must have a limited sized resource and a reserved space. If a

problem with rdiff
Hi all. (I am sending this querry here because it is somehow relating to rsync. If i am wrong please pardon me.) I am doing following on these windowsXP and Vista. I am trying to get only incremental backup using "rdiff-backup" (that also uses rsync). I have installed gcc compiler and by following the steps given in http://katastrophos.net/andre/blog/2005/11/02/rdiff-backup-on-windows/

rdiff
Is there any chance for rdiff ? I need to frequently synchronize big text file (60MB+) undertaking small changes and I am interested in differences between the subsequent versions [DNS RBL data in dnsbl format, 1E6+ lines of text, new version every 20m, on average 50 new entries (lines) in every synchronization] I would like to get (small) diff file as result of rsync session and apply it to

Shared maildir problem: IMAP list archives
Hello, I try to create IMAP archives for our mailing lists (runned by mailman). I run dovecot 1.0-stable from a recent CVS checkout. The obvious version with mboxes works without problems. However, when I try to use maildir storage I run into the following problem: -a message is sent to the list -mailman calls the external archiver (maildrop) which delivers the mail to a normal mbox (for
