problem with machine "freezing" for short periods
I have two HP dc7800 convertible minitowers that are exhibiting the
following issue: every 5-10 minutes, they will "freeze" for about 30
seconds, and then pick right back up again. During the freeze, it seems
that nothing at all happens on the system; the clock doesn't even advance
(it just picks up again with the next second, and that 30-or-so seconds
are lost).
I've tried both

Insert the second CD of an install
Using CentOS 5.5 x86_64.
I am trying to install software that comes on two discs. I can start the
install just fine, but when it comes to taking out the first disc and
putting in the second, the system won't let me eject it.
I remember reading something on the internet once about something needing to
be enabled to allow this to work, but I can't find it now. Does anybody have
a clue as

WinXP don't boot
Hi all,
I've installed CentOS 4.4 in a box which previously had dual boot (XP
SP2 and Ubuntu)
I can run CentOS without problem but I can't boot XP SP2. When I try it
the system simply hangs...

Dual booting centos 4.1 and Solaris 10 express build 15
I have been trying to multiboot centos 4.1 and the
current solaris express build 15. I have two hard
drive s, the first one ( hd0 ) devoted to CentOS 4.1
and windows xp (no problems). The second drive (hd1)
for Solaris 10 only. I tried to boot solaris from
CentOS grub and got the following error messages:

Disabling user switching in CentOS 6
Installing CentOS 6 on a lab full of workstations, and I want to disable
fast user switching. With CentOS 5, I simply made sure that the
"user_switch_enabled" entry in
/etc/gconf/schemas/gnome-screensaver.schemas was set to false. However,
that doesn't work with CentOS 6.
I've found various proposed solutions to this issue, such as
gconftool-2 --direct --config-source

updating 5.6 but not going to 6.0
I'm confused as to how to install updates for CentOS 5.6 without upgrading
to 6.0. When I do a "yum check-updates", the new *-release packages for
6.0 are listed, so I don't think I want to do a simply "yum update".
Is there a way to update 5.6 without going to 6.0?

restricting access to an NIS netgroup
I am using CentOS 5.7. I have an /etc/security/access.conf file which has
the following:
+ : root : LOCAL
+ : @mynetgroup : ALL
- : ALL : ALL
I thought this is supposed to restrict access to the system to only root
and the accounts in the mynetgroup netgroup; however, anyone NIS account
is still able to login. It appears that the access.conf is being ignored
completely, so I'm thinking

Getting confirmation for power button
Using CentOS 5.8:
Currently on my workstations, when I press the power button the computer
immediately does a 'shutdown -h now' (per /etc/acpid/events/power.conf).
Is there a way to change it so that a confirmation dialog comes up, rather
than an immediate shutdown?
I assume that I am going to need to change that power.conf file to tell
some program that the power button's been

iscsid still starting up after turning it off
I have a set of CentOS 5.7 workstations, on which I have turned of iscsid
using 'chkconfig iscid off'. However, when some of them reboot, iscsid
starts anyway.
Also, when I do an 'service --status-all", iscsid is listed twice (this is
true on both the workstations where iscsid starts and the ones where
iscsid doesn't start), which seems to indicate, I think, that it is

CUPS not generating a printcap file
According to all of the documentation I can find, an /etc/printcap file
(or whatever filename is specified with the Printcap directive) is
generated by cupsd ever time a printer is added or removed. On all of my
CentOS 6.7 systems, this is NOT happening. I can restart cups and add or
remove printers over and over and it still doesn't generate the printcap
file.
Is this a known issue, or is

Two CentOS installations failed dual boot
Hello everybody,
I installed Centos 6.2 on a computer with an older version of it in
order to dual boot both of them. I managed to install the new OS on a
physically seperated hard drive, and configured grub to make the newly
installed OS the default one. Now the older OS won't boot and this
error message shows: *"error 13: invalid or unsupported executable format"*.

Slow RAID resync
OK todays problem.
I have a HP N54L Microserver running centos 6.5.
In this box I have a 3x2TB disk raid 5 array, which I am in the
process of extending to a 4x2TB raid 5 array.
I've added the new disk --> mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdb
And grown the array --> mdadm --grow /dev/md0 --raid-devices=4
Now the problem the resync speed is v slow, it refuses to rise above
5MB, in general

Semi-OT: very weird vi behaviour
This is weird. As in, *deeply* weird.
I ssh as root from one box to another (there are keys involved), and I go
to vi a file, such as
# line 1 #
# line 2 #
# line 3
# line 4
And what I see in vi is
# line 3
# line 4
BUT, if I scroll the cursor over each line with the arrow key... I see all
four lines. I've also looked at another file, and same thing. Just checked
it out on the server I

how many people still use NIS?
Hello listmates,
I have discovered a very strange SFTP problem which I can not connect to
anything but NIS thus far. See here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-server-73/sftp-seems-to-fail-for-nis-accounts-under-openssh-5-x-816020/

Hence the question: is NIS (YP) still in use much anywhere for
authentication?
Thanks.

Installation sequence for 4.2 / 3.6 dual boot
Hello,
I have a Dell 1850 with dual Xeon procs and two u320 36Gb drives. I
would like to set this up as dual boot system with 4.2 on disk 0 and 3.6
on disk 1.
I imagine that I would install 4.2 first and then 3.6. Would I need to
remove the other hard drive while installing a given version?
Any gotchas?
How about setting up GRUB? Anything special or does the install take
care of it?
Thanks,

VDQ Grub
Very Dumb Question : I have tried about four times now, using an old
pentium2 with two hard drives (20 GB and 30 GB) to install both CentOS 4.4
and Fedora Core 6 in such a way as to enable dual-boot between them.
I've tried it by installing 4.4 first, and then FC6. I've tried it by
installing FC6 first, and then 4.4. I've tried it with and without giving
the installer permission to
