[WARN] Got 99% CPU?
Hey folks,
I ran into a few people at RubyConf who were having 99% CPU issues. Please contact me if you meet the following criteria:
1. You are running a production site.
2. You are experiencing 99% CPU errors.
3. This is frequent enough that you cannot manage it.
Thank you. Please contact me off-list about it.

Zed, you''re a moron :-)
Hi !
My mongrel just starting spitting out these nice lines:
The error occured while evaluating nil.accept. TELL ZED HE''S A MORON.
!!!!!! UNHANDLED EXCEPTION! You have a nil object when you didn''t
expect it!
Not sure what happened or why, but just FYI: Zed, you are a moron :-)
Happy holidays!

exception logging
Hi all-
I''m running mongrel with a tiny HttpHandler that hooks into a larger
library I''m working on. I''ve run into a snag with trying to debug
with it in that I''m not entirely sure how to get the exception logs
of errors that are raised.
All I get to stderr is this:
Fri Dec 22 17:16:14 -0800 2006: ERROR: Couldn''t find Models::Contact

Random(?) action hanging
Is this the behavior that supposedly indicates a problem with a
particular action? Mongrel in development mode randomly hangs on
random actions. Further requests cause USR1 logs like:
Mon Sep 18 13:04:03 PDT 2006: 0 threads sync_waiting for /, 2 still active in mongrel.
Mon Sep 18 13:07:52 PDT 2006: 1 threads sync_waiting for /public/stylesheets/table.css, 3 still active in mongrel.

Mongrel HTTP Header Problem
Hi,
I''ve recently been trying to setup Mongrel behind Pound so that I can
do mutual SSL authentication. I''ve had a few problems with Pound
(documented at [1]), but now have it working correctly.
However, I think there is a problem with Mongrel and how it deals with
the headers Pound adds to the HTTP header block. One of the extra
headers Pound adds is

What I Want For Christmas
Calling All Mongrel Minions!
I wanna have some fun and would like this as a Christmas present. The site http://www.workingwithrails.com/ has this lame popularity system that''s kind of irking some of the main Ruby contributors. I think it''s kind of funny, but would like to demonstrate what an army of motivated people can do to these kinds of popularity contests.
So, as a

mongrel_in_a_tunnel
Hi list:
I started to make a quick GemPlugin command [ssl::start] that sets up
an stunnel before calling the normal [start] command.
so
$ mongrel_rails ssl:start
will do everything that start normally does and configure/setup an
stunnel.
The question...
Obviously this plugin will require stunnel to be installed. What do
you think is the best move:
1) nothing, just require that people

Problems with mongrel dying
Hi
One of the two mongrel processes has died in the middle of the night
four times in the past 9 days, and I need help debugging this.
Each time the symptoms are the same:
* Each time I can restart the process via cap -a restart_app.
* Before the restart, there is nothing unusual in production.log or
mongrel.log.
* During the restart, about 100 repetitions of an error message are
generated in

Mongrel woes fixed
Hello all,
For the past couple of weeks I have been spending some time debugging a
couple of issues I was having with Mongrel when I put load on it. I have
seen two distinct issues:
1. Mongrel stopped responding as if in an endless loop.
2. Mongrel crashed when severely loaded.
I believe to have resolved these two issues and have attached patches
which shows the resolution (simple as it is).

mongrel_cluster: selective restarts
Hi list,
I have tried to reach Bradley (author of mongrel_cluster) by mail, but
have not gotten a response. So I''ll try trough this channel:
I have ''developed''[1] a small extension to mongrel_cluster that allows
selective restart of any one listener in a configuration that contains
more than one listener by using a command like

Debugging high CPU with Mongrel
I''m running a site that gets ~30k to 40k page hits per day. In the last 4
days my mongrel processes have been jumping into high CPU usage a couple of
times a day to the point where my site becomes unresponsive (database on a
diff machine with no load). The only way for me to resolve the problem and
reduce load on the machine is to delete my rails cache directory (I have
plenty of space

Question for Zed
Zed,
I purchased your book and was reading through it. On page 25 it states:
"Mongrel will give precedence to the parameter values in the config
file over those in the command line."
I was wondering why this is not the other way around, preference
given to the command line options.
Thanks,
~Wayne

Multiple DocRoots
I''m wondering if it''s possible to setup mongrel to have multiple document
roots? The use case I''m trying to solve is one where I have a library of
shared CSS/JS/Images and would like multiple rails application to use them.
I have written a proxy controller and added some routes to serve the static
files and it works reasonably well, but is extremely slow, because

no log/mongrel.log file on win32, looking for suggestions...
Hello Mongrels around the world!
Been thinking a way to unify the issue I described in the subject.
For those who aren''t aware, mongrel (actually, mongrel_rails) only
generate the log file if daemonize was used (-d)
That means no log file under windows, due his lack of
fork/daemonization capabilities.
Now, users that need to run mongrel on windows cannot report and fill
the empty

Mongrel and Sandbox
Z-Man,
DHH recently said:
"And [_why''s] latest work on sandbox looks stellar.
Making it drop-dead easy to run multiple Rails
applications in the same Mongrel process without
conflicts. Thumbs up to both him and Matz for getting
Sandbox on track for inclusion with the next Ruby
release."
Does that mean what I think it means - that one or
more Mongrel processes may one day be

Clustering - Avoiding "dead" processes?
I have Mongrel Cluster setup with Apache a mod_proxy_balancer. I''ve seen (from time to time) mongrel instances become non-responsive. Is there anyway to configure the balancer so that it "knows" which processes are no longer good and stops trying to use them?

Spinning mongrels and SIGUSR1
First off: Our clusters are LVS balanced Apache 2.2.3 +
mod_proxy_balancer + gem mongrel 0.3.13.3 / mongrel_cluster 0.2 +
memcached / gem memcache_client + gem rails 1.1.6 on debian boxen, and a
pgcluster backend.
On 2 of our deployed clusters, we are getting the "spinning mongrel"
problem. As the clusters are very low volume right now, it takes days to
collect a spinner, making it

GET request works via curl, crashes from Java
[That subject line is of course a severe truncation!]
I''ve got a REST request that works fine from curl but causes a
mongrel error when executed from a Java program. This all worked with
fine with rails 1.1.6 and webrick. I''m trying to update the app to
rails 1.2.1 (I need working around_filters).
I''m running in development mode with mongrel 1.01 running on macosx

Win32 release coming?
Hi there
what''s the status of the 0.13.4 release on Windows? I want to wrap up
a project in the next 2 weeks and I''d wait for the new release if
it''s coming in that timeframe. Otherwise I''d stay with the current
windows version.
thanks
