compressed audio tutorial - "major" update
I've made a large update to the introduction to compressed audio. I completely rewrote the first section, which I wasn't happy with. It now features two diagrams (worth 1000 words each!), and is broken up into a couple of sections. http://cs.leander.isd.tenet.edu/~mitchell/vorbis_intro.html I have also continued to tweak other sections based on feedback from email and this forum.

Power-outage
I have a CentOS-5.6 remote server in a house in Italy, where there are occasional thunder-storms. There was one yesterday, when the electricity went off 3 times, for a second or so on each occasion. My server, an HP MicroServer, came back (re-booted) on 2 of the 3 occasions, but not on the third. I assume that the problem arises because the machine does not close down properly. (Although it is

bitrate limits don't work with -q settings?
I'm sorry if this question has been asked before; I've looked through the archives and haven't seen anything. The problem I'm seeing is that oggenc's VBR encoding doesn't seem to pay attention to any sort of bitrate limitation, either the -m or bitrate_hard_min settings. It isn't that it temporarily dips below the minimum; the average for the whole (in this case,

pcspkr wave encoding
Hi, there is an interesting case when the FLAC encoder (using 1.2.0) is given simple waves. Simple waves means: I have a list of {frequency, duration, pause} tuples that define the monophonic tune. In other words, exactly one frequency is played at a time. This is the original dataset from 1989 (driving a PC speaker back then): $ ls -l ihold.sd -rw-r--r-- 1 jengelh users 20616 Aug 14 00:57

Cycle Regression Analysis in R?
Hello R community, Does anyone know of a package that will perform cycle regression analysis? I have searched the R-help archives etc. but have come up with nothing so far. If I am unable to find an existing R package to do so, is there anyone familiar with fitting sine functions to data. My problem is this: I have a long time-series of daily SWE estimates (SWE = snow water equivalence, or

Sine function fitting
Hi, Is there a package to perform a sine function fitting to XY data? Thx, Ashz -- View this message in context: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/Sine-function-fitting-tp3000156p3000156.html Sent from the R help mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Write pure sine to *.ogg directly?
Hello, I am author of a Morse code training software written in Perl at http://starling.ws/morse Currently I output to *.wav and, if on Unix, convert to *.ogg. And that's okay for a trainer. But I have desire to upgrade the project to a real-time communication tool...or at least a Morse code audio mail routine. And I should like to avoid *.wav. I'd like some means of writing a pure

Fitting a sine wave using solver
Greetings, I have several sets of oscillation data and would like to estimate the parameters of a sine function to each set (and hopefully automate this). A colleague provided an excel sheet that uses solver to minimize the RSS after fitting the sine function to each data set, but this cumbersome and difficult to automate. Is there a method in R for fitting a given sine function to a

Sine Regression in R
Hi everyone, I am trying to fit a sine function on one year of wind data. I have two questions below. Looking around on the net I managed to get the following: Sine Equation: y = a + b * sin( c + d*x ) b is the amplitude, c is the phase shift, d is something deal with periodicty of data*.* This can be linearised by sin( c+dx ) = cos(c) * sin(dx) + sin(c) * cos(dx). If one calls dx = x1 y

fitting periodic 'sine wave' model
I have been attempting to estimate the periodic contribution of an effect to some data but have not been able to fit a sine wave within R. It would be nice to start by being able to fit a sine wave with an amplitude and frequency. x<-seq(0,20,by=0.5) y<-2*sin(2*pi*.5*x) #amplitude =2, frequency=0.5 # This failed to converge r<-nls(y ~ A*sin(2*pi*F*x), start=list(A = 1, F = 1),

Followup: copy-paste graphics from R to Word on Mac OS X
After trying numerous options, I'm just about at my wits end. The most frequent suggestion was to export to a postscript or PDF file and import that into Word. However, no matter what I did or how I did it, the results were extraordinarily ugly and somewhat time-consuming. What I've tried so far: 1. Copy and paste from the R graphics output window into Word (in Mac OS X), this is

Fit a sine to data
Dear R-users, I'd like to fit a sine function to my data. The result should have a format (and thus the formula, too) y ~ a + sin(x+b) where y and x are vectors, and a and b are (yet) unknown values. The data sets (vectors x and y) are OK, and I can do a simple lm fitting lm(y~x), or lm(y~I(sin(2*pi*x/360))), succesfully My issue is that I'm not able to do the optional linear shift in

create waveform sawtooth
My tuneR sawtooth wave function generator is broken. When I use the sine function, I get exactly what I expect: a sine wave whose frequency is defined by the freq parameter. In particular, higher frequencies have shorter wavelengths (more cycles per second means shorter waves). When I create a sawtooth wave, the opposite seems to occur: higher frequencies result in longer waves. But that?s not

PWGL in wine, problems
Hello, I'm new on this list. First of all, thank you to all the developers of this great project! At the moment there is only an application that keeps me on both macos and windows, its name is PWGL a free environment for computer assisted composition in openGL. (http://www2.siba.fi/PWGL/) I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 and wine 0.9.59. I have to say that I also installed vcrun2005 and
