setting up auto logout in CentOS 6
I would like to have my lab workstations logout a session after the person has been idle for a certain period of time. After some searching on the web, I got into
/etc/gconf/schemas/gnome-session.schemas
and set the default value of max_idle_action to ?forced-logout?:
<schema>
<key>/schemas/desktop/gnome/session/max_idle_action</key>

Login Feature
I asked one of my team mates to evaluate centos 5.2 as a more stable
distro for our business use than Fedora which we have used for years.
His main objection so far has been the lack of a neat feature of
recent Fedoras (at least since 7) that allows a user to login as
himself if the screen is locked by another user (a switch user
feature).
Is that feature available or is it planned?
Thanks.

metacity theme opacity
I pushed out some changes to gwd that makes it possible to properly set
an overall opacity value for any metacity theme. Making the complete
decorations translucent can look bad with some themes. However, I've
made it possible to have the opacity fade from opaque to the selected
opacity value in a similar way to how the built-in decorations look.
This usually looks a lot better.

I presume you're talking about panels with "Autohide" set. If you have
the GUI gconf-editor installed, it's under

CentOS 7 turn off power saving by command line
In CentOS 6 gconftool-2 (command line) is used to enable/disable items.
In CentOS 7 I found "settings->power-> blank screen" as something I
wish to configure by the command line?
How is that accomplished?
I brought up gconf-editor and searched for power and blank and found
nothing.
How can I control this setting from the command line?
Thanks

Telling virt-manager to re-read ~/.gconf in RHEL 6
Hi all,
I've written a tool that configured Virtual Machine Manager, but I've
got a condition that I am now sure how to handle...
If the user isn't logged in and I configure their
~/.gconf/apps/virt-manager/*, and then they log in, everything works
great. However, if they've already logged in and there was no prior
virt-manager configuration, the custom config is overwritten

Two issues
Hi. I have just installed latest git vanilla compiz under fedora core 6
and I have run into two problems:
1. Metacity theme support does not work. As soon as I type in
gconftool-2 -s /apps/gwd/use_metacity_theme -t bool true
the window border disappears. I have tried it both under KDE and
Gnome with the same result. the window border can be brought back by
setting the above value back to false.

setting the screen background with gconftool-2
I centos 5 I can run this command:
su myuser -c "/usr/bin/gconftool-2 -t string --set
/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
/usr/share/backgrounds/images/mypic.png"
and this works fine.
under centos 6 it does not appear to be working...
I can run the similiar --get command and it tells me its set to what I
asked for. However the screen is not showing mypic.png
I can use

Disabling the shutdown buttons in graphical login screen of CentOS 6.3
Hi,
I am not sure if I probably have overlooked some important clue, but I
am stuck with a problem with the gdm-greeter in CentOS 6.3 here since
three days without finding any suitable solution.
The problem:
* I have to somehow deactivate the "Suspend", "Restart" and "Shutdown"
options in the login screen.
* This has to be done in CLI mode, as I have to change

Insert the second CD of an install
Using CentOS 5.5 x86_64.
I am trying to install software that comes on two discs. I can start the
install just fine, but when it comes to taking out the first disc and
putting in the second, the system won't let me eject it.
I remember reading something on the internet once about something needing to
be enabled to allow this to work, but I can't find it now. Does anybody have

running X as root in centos 6
When I run X as root in centos 6
I get a nice little message that "your currently trying to run as root

I do this for a reason as a post install step, then the system reboots
and it never happens again...
I am trying to find how to set this checkbox which says "never ask me

Getting confirmation for power button
Using CentOS 5.8:
Currently on my workstations, when I press the power button the computer
immediately does a 'shutdown -h now' (per /etc/acpid/events/power.conf).
Is there a way to change it so that a confirmation dialog comes up, rather
than an immediate shutdown?
I assume that I am going to need to change that power.conf file to tell
some program that the power button's been

External vfat devices show uppercase filenames, how to change defaults for GNOME desktop?
Hello there!
I've recently switched from Fedora 11 to CentOS6. Now my SD cards
(automatically mounted on plug) contents is displayed as UPPERCASE
filenames.
I well see in mount's man that vfat's shortname option can be set to
either lower, win95, winnt, mixed. OK, that's for entries in /etc/fstab
or when mounting manually.
I'd like to change the defaults for devices that

Script for enabling screen savers in GNOME and KDE on Centos 5.x
Hi Friends,
I am trying to configure screensavers settings on Gnome and KDE
running Centos 5.x 32-bit environment. I need to prepare a script
which will be push by Puppet and this script should be able to change
settings like idle_delay, set customized password-protected screen
saver, enabling lock etc..
I have tried below commands for Gnome and somehow the settings are not

CUPS not generating a printcap file
According to all of the documentation I can find, an /etc/printcap file
(or whatever filename is specified with the Printcap directive) is
generated by cupsd ever time a printer is added or removed. On all of my
CentOS 6.7 systems, this is NOT happening. I can restart cups and add or
remove printers over and over and it still doesn't generate the printcap
file.
Is this a known issue, or is
