Old hardware, newer kernels
I have an old server (old hardware) that's been running 6.4 with kernel
2.6.32-279.19.1.el6.i686, no problem. Except, any kernel update after that
causes it not to boot anymore. All I get is a blinking cursor on the
screen, nothing else.
Is this the end of this hardware, no more kernel updates after this?
For reference, these are all the options that kernel is booting up with

Kernel panic after update to 6.4
After successfully updating three CentOS 6.3 VM guests to 6.4 I decided to update the host as well. And it failed to boot.
Kernel panic - Not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Pid: 1, comm: init not tainted: 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.x86_64 #1
Plus a call trace I couldn't see
Luckily I was able to boot from the previous kernel and get my system back up. After booting to the previous kernel I

Older versions of packages disappearing from yum repos
I've been designing the infrastructure for a new team using CentOS 6 and Puppet. I'm still learning Puppet, but thought I had things pretty well under control. After this week, I'm beginning to wonder? :-)
In the last week I've had versions of three packages disappear from the yum repositories I'm using, both EPEL and the standard ones from a base CentOS 6.3 install. Since

Back to gspca
Ok... digging still more into this problem that I'm *still* fighting,
using mplayer and a higher debug level, what I *think* the significant
message is (this is just one example line):

CentOS 6.4, 2.6.32-358.11.1.el6.x86_64
(And no, I can't just upgrade - the users have to be sure that the
computational results will be correct....)
It's throwing ECC errors. Trying to start mcelogd, first it said nothing.
Restart told me "Please load edac_mce_amd module." I did a modprobe
edac_mce_amd, and lsmod tells me it's in. But now

kernel panic/abort during boot
Just did an in-place update from 6.1 to 6.2 on my eeepc 901 (Atom CPU).
during boot, (if I hit ESC to see the boot messages) it says "starging udev"
then nothing else for a few seconds, then a huge register dump scrolls
by. it's too big to see the beginning of it.
If I boot from the prior kernel and look in /var/log/messages, I don't
see any evidence of the failed boot.

CONFIG_ARPD turned on in centosplus kernel.
Alan& Akemi,
Would it be possible to get CONFIG_ARPD turned on in the
centosplus 6.x kernel? It is required to use opennhrp.
See the link below where is was decided to turn it on in Fedora.

Lustre buffer cache causes large system overhead.
We have just discovered that a large buffer cache generated from traversing a
lustre file system will cause a significant system overhead for applications
with high memory demands. We have seen a 50% slowdown or worse for
applications. Even High Performance Linpack, that have no file IO whatsoever
is affected. The only remedy seems to be to empty the buffer cache from memory

Port Forwarding
Is ''port forwarding'' a relatively new thing with packet filtering? Or has
it always been available since iptables appeared on the scene.

Samba vs. Firewall and/or SELinux
Hi all.
I created a smb-share on my el6 for all windows-pcs in my
home-network (I'm the only Linux-User in my family) for sharing all the
stuff we have, like music and videos and documents. The share will be
shown on the other pcs (Windows XP), but they can't open it. The
error-message ist "Share not found" on our preferred language of course!

trouble with crash utility
Hi all,
I recently had an issue where, running kernel 2.6.32-358.11.1, the box
would be up for about five minutes, then would crash and reboot. kdump
saved the vmcore files, so I was hoping to run crash against them to see
why this was occurring. I copied the vmcores to another machine,
installed the kernel-debuginfo package, and gave it a try, but had no
success:

How do I allow traceroute to reach my server? Pings work fine but
traceroute stops at the last hop before my server. If I shut off the
firewall it reaches it fine.

tinc + OpenSSL
Hello,
I just want to ask if it has been considered to use OpenSSL
for the encryption stuff. I guess they've spent quite some
time on the subject and have the cipher routines both
debugged and optimized.
I know that some of the current cipher code was taken from
SSLeay but since OpenSSL is de facto SSLeay successor, it
might give tinc more flexibility and allow the user to choose

samba4 + LDAP
Hello all,
we are currently running several samba 3 services to give CIFS access to
shares (mostly homedirs).
Well, access to the shares are controlled by our LDAP service (not AD,
OpenLDAP). Our servers are
using sssd + pam to check wether or not a user is allowed to mount the
share (on some old
servers we also use the pam_ldap module for pam).
Now, we just want to run samba 4 as simply as

Sound Stutters and Sputters then dies
Hey Y'all,
Recently my sound has been misbehaving. The issue exists when I play
sound using Rhythmbox, Totem Movie Player, or even Youtube video in
Firefox or Chrome. The sound stutters and drops out. Sounds very
rough. On Youtube the sound will eventually just die and can not be
restarted until the browser is shut down and restarted.
I've had issues related to Repo Forge
