Male and female symbols?
Does anyone have an idea of how one might plot male and female
symbols on a graph using R? Thanks!

Plotting female and male signs
Dear R-users,
Just like other users (as seen from previous posts on the list), I would
like to use female and male signs in plots. I found B. Ripley's post
about using Unicode characters. However, it doesn't works for me.

unicode only works with a second one
I'd like to paste a zodiac sign on a graph, but it only prints it when
I add another unicode ( \u3030) to the desired \u2648 - why?
See the examplecode (compare the orange with the skyblue):
plot(c(-1,1),c(-4,-2),type="n")
text(x=0,y=-3.0,labels="\u2648 \u3030",cex=2.3,col="skyblue")
text(x=0,y=-3.2,labels="\u2648",cex=2.3,col="orange")

Symbols for male/female
Dear all,
I would like to use the biological symbols for male and female as plotting

to have these symbols using pch= in plot() nor are they implemented via
expression() or at least I did not find them. I found that the symbols are
e.g. available in the wasysym and the marvosym package in LaTeX.

Windows OS, R and unicode
I'm trying to use the biological female and male signs in R2.5.1 under
Windows XP. I can access and insert these symbols using word-processors.
In general these should be available as \u2640 and \u2642 but I can't
make them happen in R using (say) text(5,5, "\u2640") message "invalid
\uxxxx sequence"
I've replaced Arial with Arial unicode MS in Rdevga and

Perpendicular symbol in plotmath?
Hey,
Does anyone know of an equivalent to the LaTeX \perp (perpendicular)
symbol for adding to R plots? Parallel is easy enough ("||"), but I
haven't been
able to find a way of adding perpendicular. The plotmath documentation
doesn't mention how to do it, so I'm inclined to think that it doesn't
exist - but surely there must be some way of achieving the desired
result,

Hershey fonts and substitute()
Hello R users,
I am new to R, so this may be a very stupid question. I need to
subscript the dotted circle (Hershey escape sequence "\\SO") to a
string. I tried using
text(.5,.5,substitute( R[disk] == 5 R["\\SO"] ) )
but it turns out to be a syntax error.
Do you have any suggestion?
Thanks

Thanks.

How to get special (Hershey) font symbols into plot axis labels?
Dear R experts-
I'm running R 1.2.3 (2001-04-26) on Linux.
I need to get special symbols, such as a circle with a dot in it
as used to indicate Solar units in astronomy, into my plot axis labels.
How can I do this?
Using the R documentation on the Hershey font sets, one can plot
a Solar symbol within the world coordinates of a plot like this:
>plot(1:10,1:10)

French accents on characters
Hello
Could someone please direct me to the correct commands for adding accents
(grave and aigu) to a letter in a plot title, label, or in added text? I'm
sure there's a handy list somewhere, but I've failed in coming up with the
correct search words to find it.
Thank you muchly!

Equation as a character string
I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to use a character string as an
equation, e.g:
eqn1string <- "x^2 + x + 5"
Then I want to tell R:
1) that eqn1string is actually an equation (even though it was stored as a
character string), and
2) to apply the equation to a specified value of x (e.g. given x <- 6,
what is the result of the equation).
Thanks in advance for any

How to get special (Hershey) font symbols into plot axis labels? [Revisited]
Dear R users,
I would like to use sub- and super-script in axis labels. I assume this
is best done using Hershey symbols. When trying to find information on
using Hershey font symbols in axis labels, I came across the following
discussion thread:
http://maths.newcastle.edu.au/~rking/R/help/02a/1857.html
Have Hershey font implementations moved on since then?
Thanks,
Sander.

postscript symbols?
dear R wizards:
is it possible to use a postscript font symbol as a plot symbol? in
particular, I want to use the four postscript symbols for playing cards
(club, heart, spade, diamond) as points. In LaTeX, these four are
\Pisymbol{psy}{"A7} \Pisymbol{psy}{"A8}
\Pisymbol{psy}{"A9} \Pisymbol{psy}{"A10}
and what I would love to do is place them, at say, (x=1,y=1),

special symobol / character
Hi all,
Is it possible to add a permil (or per mille) symbol to
an R plot (I couldn't find this symbol under demo(Hershey) or
the plotmath information).
In some ascii tables it is symbol no. 137.
cheers,
Matt.
