Reinstalling boot blocks on a ZFS-only system
So, I've long known and it makes sense that when you're booted from a ZFS volume, you can't mess with the boot-loader. And, I know a few months ago I had a set of commands I would use when booted from a CD that would initialize the network and copy the "release/boot" from somewhere else so that I could install bootblocks and boot-loaders from more recent code. Sadly, I

shutdown -r / shutdown -h / reboot all hang and don't cleanly dismount
Hello -STABLE@,
So I've seen this situation seemingly randomly on a number of both
physical 9.1 boxes as well as VMs for I would say 6-9 months at least.
I finally have a physical box here that reproduces it consistently
that I can reboot easily (ie; not a production/client server).
No matter what I do:
reboot
shutdown -p
shutdown -r
This specific server will stop at "All buffers

ACPI Warning, then hang
I'm getting the following warning, and then the system locks:
ACPI Warning: Incorrect checksum in table [(bunch of spaces)] - 0x29,
should be 0x48
Here's a pic: http://db.tt/O6dxONzI
System is on a SuperMicro C7X58 motherboard that I just upgraded to
BIOS 2.0a, which I would like to stay on if possible. I tried
adjusting all the ACPI related BIOS settings without success.

Subversion 1.8 / FreeBSD 8 x86 STABLE Symlinks
When using svn 1.8 I have come across a situation where when it is used pointing to a symlink that refers to a working directory that a update will either segfault or exit prematurely and leave a lock held on the working directory that the symlink points to.
This leaves you with one choice but to run cleanup on the referenced actual working directory which was AFAIK never the case for any version

still mbuf leak in 9.0 / 9.1?
Hi list,
since we activated 10gbe on ixgbe cards + jumbo frames(9k) on 9.0 and now on 9.1 we recognize that after a random period of time, sometimes a week, sometimes only a day, the
system doesn't send any packets out. The phenomenon is that you can't login via ssh, nfs and istgt is not operative. Yet you can login on the console and execute commands.
A clean shutdown isn't possible

7.0 issues fixed? upgrade timing?
1. I have a realtek network card and am using a cable modem router. Does anyone know if fixes for problems with these (see below) have been backported from HEAD to RELENG_7?
2. Is this a good time to upgrade to RELENG_7?
3. I read a post last week that advised that 7.1 is a long way off. Appreciate any advice on use of ULE 3.0 and ZFS prior to 7.1 and a comment on what is holding up 7.1.
Thanks

every 2nd echo-request malformed when ping -s >4067
Hello,
while checking new mtu9k-setup, I discovered that ping has some odd
behaviour.
If I use payloadsize > 4067, every 2nd icmp-echo-request seems to be
malformed:

UNEXPECTED SOFT UPDATE INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY

Sep 21 08:57:54 belle fsck: /dev/ad4s1d: UNEXPECTED SOFT UPDATE INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
Ok, so I ran fsck manually (even with -y), but yet it refuses to clear/fix
whatever to the questions posed as fsck runs. What does this all mean?
Thanks,

slow bootloader on Dell R320
Hi all !
Thanks for the very good support of Dell R320 hardware, perc H310 is
well supported, BCM5720 seems to work correctly and performances are
great.
The only problem i have found is very strange. The FreeBSD bootloader
take many times to load, 30sec-2minutes to boot the kernel and show the
bootloader menu. After that, the system boots properly, at a normal
speed.
Is there any issue or

recommended memory for zfs
Hello zfs question about memory.
I heard zfs is very ram hungry.
Service looking to run:
- nginx
- postgres
- php-fpm
- python
I have a machine with two quad core cpus but only 4 G Memory
I'm looking to buy more ram now.
What would be the recommend amount of memory for zfs across 6 drives on
this setup?
Also can 9.1 now boot to zfs from the installer?
(no tricks for post install)
Thanks

Weird I/O hangs (9.1R, arcsas, interrupt spikes on uhci0)
Hi,
very periodically, we see I/O hangs for about 10 seconds, roughly once per minute.
Each time this happens, the I/O rate simply drops to zero, and all disk access hangs; this is also very noticeable on the shell, for NFS clients etc. Everything else (networking, kernel, ?) seems to continue normally.
Environment: FreeBSD 9.1R GENERIC on amd64, using ZFS, on a ARC1320 PCIe with 24x Seagate

IPMI serial console
Hi all,
A recent thread inspired me to try getting a proper serial console working on a Supermicro X9SCL motherboard with IPMI.
However I find that while I see loader messages and the getty I enabled after boot I don't get any kernel messages which does somewhat limit the utility..
The BMC creates COM3 (/dev/cuau2) which works with getty. I modified /boot/loader.conf like so..

Command line not responding
Running 9.0-Stable on an i386.
Whenever I type a command at the prompt I get
the output
/usr/local/lib/libintl.so.9: Undefined symbol "_ThreadRuneLocale"
and nothing else - the command will not run. Just the
above output. Commands like "ls" and "exit" work, but not much
else. This happends whether I am logged in a user or as root.
Cannot even halt the system from

Panic : bad pte
Hello,
There it is, all my computers on FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE had panic. I can
just say there is a problem in the 9.1-RELEASE because I had no panic
before. What afraid me is that my production server also panic'ed a
few days ago, fortunately it does not appears so often.
This is a panic that happened on my desktop computer, with a graphic
card. The crash usually appears when X starts.

rc.d/sysctl fails to parse sysctl.conf
Hello,
I tried to get my sound working, and long story short: rc.d/sysctl parses
sysctl.conf wrongly if there are sysctls of the form
mib=val1=val2
which is what you need for sound. For reference I needed/wanted
dev.hdaa.4.nid25_config=as=1,seq=15
dev.hdaa.4.nid31_config=as=1
I believe the following patch would address the incorrect parsing:

dueling (s)printf()'s - what's the cure?
Hello All,
I mentioned a problem with this once before, and was referred to
other threads that also talked about this. But I believe a recent
problem I was experiencing, may have been related to this:
[: -le: argument expected. So I'd like to bring it up again, in
hopes that someone might have a cure. Specifically, two printf()'s
are sent to the same line, which results in a /very/ hard
