external esata RAID box, how to spin down drives when idle?
I've posted before about my Venus DS3R Pro2, specifically in relation to using USB3. But this a different topic about the same device. It doesn't seem to do any power-saving on its own, i.e, the drives stay spinning continuosuly, 24X7. Setting the appropriate power-save options in the screen saver or power manager screens doesn't seem to have any effect on these drives. Wondering

LME problem
I am analyzing data on a study of the effects of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) on cognitive function, as measured by a score from an objective test. I have 140 people who receive the CABG surgery and 92 controls, with four measurements of cognitive function over time (at 0, 3, 12 and 36 months). I have fitted a linear mixed model using lme with a random intercept for subject and a random

SELinux errors on my CentOS 5.3 (32 bit) Desktop after upgrade from 5.2
I am running SELinux in Permissive mode. GNOME and KDE are installed. Following the upgrade from CentOS 5.2 to 5.3 (32 bit) I am getting SELinux messages. Possibly of interest to someone here or upstream? (Since I'm using Permissive mode, this is not a problem for me). If these are known issues, please disregard. Messages follow: (1) SELinux is preventing nm-system-setti (system_dbusd_t)

R 1.90 make problem with /usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xutil.h on suse linux 9.1?
This is probably a Suse specific problem and not a bug in R, but I'm reporting it in case it's useful for someone to know about.... Trying to compile R1.9.0 from source on a standard Suse 9.1 install (athlon in a shuttle sn41g2). configure seems fine but the Suse X11R6 Xlib.h might be toxic. In case it helps, here's the sad end to the make output. I can post the Xlib.h if that

MAC OS X and Samba Shares > 2 TB
Does somebody know if the Samba Client in MAC OS X (10.3.4 and 10.3.5) has problems looking at Linux-based Samba shares that are larger than 2 TB? I have Samba 3.0.2 running on my Linux box. I have never had any difficulty with the Mac seeing a 2 TB RAID array on the Linux box, but when the Mac looks at the 4 TB array, it can see all the contents and create folders but it can't create

When/whether to use SER?
I have seen a lot of references to SER. Currently, I have: 1 PRI to Telco 1 PRI to old PBX Several SIP phones with the intention of having approx. 200. I do have people that travel with softphones (currently X-Lite, but will be testing EyeBeam for better codec and echo cancel capabilities) Currently the traveling users have to VPN in first which I am sure is adding extra overhead to the calls. I
