[fdo] remote desktop on X?
Hi, I'm a linux newbie. I just finally got a working install of
Fedora yesterday.
My question to the list is - how can I get my WindowsXP machine to
login to an X Windows Gnome or KDE session on my Fedora machine? I've
tried VNC, but it's really laggy over the wireless connection in my
house. I want to be able to login to my Fedora box from work,
connecting over the internet. Can

[fdo] Name of Desktop folder
Hi
Is there a standard for the name of the Desktop folder? Whichever
distribution I've seen names the Desktop folder as "Desktop", and
any attempt I made localizing this folder with a .desktop entry
was unsuccessful.
So what major problems (other than application specific ones,
i.e the download folder may not be found, etc) could I face if I
rename this folder from Desktop to

[fdo] .desktop .menu and icons with autotools
Hi all,
I want to manage .desktop, .menu and icon files of a project (Wormux)
with autotools. Does it exist some doc about this ?
I had a look at Amarok sources and I could install the .desktop with the
following in my Makefile.am :
xdg_appsdir = $(datadir)/applications
xdg_apps_DATA = wormux.desktop
Are there some similar variables for icons and .menu files ?
Furthermore I saw on some Gnome

[fdo] Security for desktop apps
Hi,
I'm curious what work has been done on security desktop apps using
things like SELinux and AppArmor or equivalents on other OSs.
At the moment it seems to be the norm for apps to both read and
change their config files if they have them and that seems to offer
the potential for malware to exploit a bug in an app to make it
easily propagate to the next invocation of the app.
My general

[fdo] Linux Desktop Testing Project - Hosting request
Hi,
LDTP (Linux Desktop Testing Project) hosted in
http://gnomebangalore.org/ldtp
About LDTP:
*Problem:*
In windows domain there are many GUI automation tools, which can
recognize the GUI as "objects" and not just with co-ordinates.
Unfortunately, Open Source Linux GUI automation tools are not matured up
to that level - at least to my knowledge ;) . Without this advancement

[fdo] Integration of network-softwares like samba, nfs and sftp with the desktop
Hi there,
I would like to enable the desktop user to create shared folders, for
example using protocols like Samba, nfs and sftp.
For the user to make this possible, the user needs (on a Linux machine
configured with the defaults of most current Linux distributions) root
privileges.
However. In a desktop environment, in my humble opinion the possibility
for a normal user to configure a simple

I think two more should be added: ShootingGame and DrivingGame. I'd
like to use those in my .desktop files while maintaining standards
compliance, so how could I go

[fdo] Scheduling subsystems (crontab, at) and the desktop
Hi there fellow hackers, geeks and others who want the UNIX desktop to
succeed.
I bring forward the question whether or not a (freedesktop.org)
specification is necessary for application scheduling software.
The current UNIX Desktop user does not have an easy way to configure the
tasks which he wants to schedule. Sure we have such a utility. And sure
we can shout to our Desktop users

[fdo] where to find fdo logos?
Hi,
I have been looking for the freedesktop.org logo in a good resolution or
even vector based, but I was not able to find it. If someone could
point me to a ps, svg or other vector based version, that would be
great. I saw a vector based version of the logo on Keith's screenshots
of window-level image compositing, so they must be somewhere around
there. If you have the logo in a higher
