Don''t Shout at your JBODs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDacjrSCeq4 I wonder if the inverse is true. If I whisper soothing words of encouragement at my JBODs, will I get more IOPS with reduced latency? :^)

Windows Server 2003 SP 1
Samba 3.0.11 with Winbind running on Redhat Enterprise Linux 3, compiled with --with-pam (possibly another argument that I can't remember at this second). I applied it to my DC that is playing the PDC role today and all of a sudden Winbind could not enumerate any Active Directory information. Mind you, I'm not joined to the domain using Kerberos/ADS; the libs that come with RHEL3 are

Windows vista's early terminate Rgui execution
Hi,I have a frustrating problem from vista that I wonder if anyone has come across the same problem. I wrote a script that involves long computational time (although, during the calculation, it spits out text on the gui to notify me the progress of the calculation periodically). Windows vista always stopped my calculation and claimed that 'Rgui is stop-working. Windows is checking for

VoicePulse 1-800 numbers sound problem
To whom it may concern, When dialing out an 800 number (888,866,877) through VoicePulse IAX you'll get a choppy sound. This is not due to a problem on your Asterisk or your line- the bad sound effect occurs in VoicePulse. 3.0.2a Windows XP can't find homes
Clients are Windows 2000; server is running Samba version 3.0.2a. We've been a W2K shop for some time but have started to get in a few Windows XP systems (principally laptops). The issue we're experiencing with the Win XP machines is that they can't map the homes share, either through a VPN or when connected directly to the network the samba server is on. All other shares remain

3.0.2a - homes occasionally missing
Clients are Windows 2000; server is running Samba version 3.0.2a. We're experiencing a sporadic issue with the homes share occasionally coming up missing. All other shares remain mappable and accessable. If the workstation is rebooted, it can once again access the share. This is new behavior; 2.2.8a did not have this problem. As of yet I haven't been able to figure out what

levelplot and source() problems
I have been using levelplot but have had trouble calling it inside functions - something seems to go wrong when it's not called directly from the R command prompt. Simplest reproducible example: $ R --vanilla > library(lattice) > levelplot(matrix(1:4,2,2)) - This gives a nice plot in soothing pastel colors. Now, with a file lptest.r containing 2 lines: library(lattice)

v3.0.0, AD, 2k3 mumbles
I'm running a Samba 3.0.0 server in production in security = ADS mode against a W2k ADS server. Works just fine, thanks! We're sort of under pressure to regrade to a 2003 AD server, which sent me trying stuff out a bit. Meager results. The 3.0.0 I have (linked with MIT krb5-1.2.8) refuses to verify incoming tickets: [2003/10/28 16:27:36, 3]

Samba 3.0.13 and deleting files
I haven't seen a solution yet, but here's what I'm running into: 3.0.13 with Winbind on Redhat Enterprise Linux 3, compiled with --with-pam as well as attempts with that and --with-acl-support - note that though the samba server is a member of a 2003 AD but not using "net ads" but "net rpc", everything works as desired on 3.0.11 (which I went back to to get this

puzzle
Sorry again for the only marginal relation to asterisk, but the issue does affect the voice performance I am experiencing, so I am soothing my guilt with that. Bet you don't see this every day: ast% uptime 13:48:08 up 981 days, 18:29, 1 user, load average: 1.08, 1.02, 1.01 ast% I *REALLY* want this machine to see 1000 days uptime, if for nothing other than bragging rights. Windows 2000 Domain Controller Security Setting
I sent an email last night regarding a security issue we were having with our Windows 2000 domain controllers and Samba's interaction with them. It turns out part of the issue is that security settings don't propagate to the domain controllers without rebooting them all. But, slightly contrary to my previous email: The application to view these settings is (on a domain controller):

tune2fs options
Is there any way of making operations like dropping and adding a journal: tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/local/my_dev and tune2fs -o journal_data -j -J device=LABEL=my-journal-device /dev/local/my_dev more verbose? It would be nice to know what's going on, since just sitting there can be quite unnerving! In the end, it all worked ok, but actually seeing progress can be soothing. -- Ralf

Printer Rights Fail
Hello everyone, I upgraded my Samba server on my RHL 7.2 box from 2.2.3a to 2.2.7. Almost immediately afterwards, all of my admin users suddenly were unable to access the printers that were being shared by Samba. Any idea of what is wrong and how to fix it? The messages I'm getting are that I do not have enough rights. I am using a Windows 2000 Server PDC and a lot of Windows XP Pro, and

Bringing Vista's Speech Recognition Engine to Linux via Wine
I have RSI (hurty hands) and need software for recognition of continuous speech. Linux has nothing workable. Dragon was bad even on Windows. What's needed is a Linux speech engine, so that the linux crew can get making a good GUI. So I'm trying to bring over the Vista Speech Engine. Here's my (failed) attempt: http://womblezone.blogspot.com/ I'm trying to bring it over with

"virgin" mail accounts
Hello, I'm willing to swear that with the 0.99.10.4 Debian package in my rather extensive tests with mailbox format dovecot created not only any missing parental directories but also the INBOX file, but the later I can't prove/test now as I upgraded all respective boxes. However 0.99.10.5 will still create (if needed and possible) missing directories for mbox storage, just not an
