upgrade to 3.3 on debian lenny.
Does anyone have experience with the upgrade from 3.2 ( in lenny core )
to the samba provided 3.3 debian packages?
Specifically, I'm looking for a list of gotchas in this process, as I'm
short on machines I can use as test servers...
Cheers,
Steve

Simple group question...
New to this windows domain stuff, sorry ( at my age learning new stuff
can take a while ).
I've set up a domain and joined a couple of XP workstations to is and
all is fine. What I want to do now is to ensure that the users of these
PCs still have administrative rights on their PC's.
Can anyone show me the basics / point me to a good guide on how to do
this???
TIA,
Steve

Migration from samba_dsdb to tdbsam.
While trying to resolve the loss of prefix for full_audit, I attempted to
update from Samba 4.3.9 to 4.4.5. Its a very simple environment,
standalone server running on i386 built from source.
After performing the build and installation, I was informed that
passdb backend = samba_dsdb
was no longer supported, so I commented out the line, to find which default
I should use. testparm advises it

Simple group question...
Hi,
This works for me ,you can try.
After join computer to domain then log on to Windows Xp with local
administrator account and go to control panel -> addusers (select
account from your domain) -> Grant access level to your domain account
as "Administrator".
Or you can use "net" command to do this.
Open a cmd shell, then execute:
C:\> net localgroup

changing the character set.
Hi list,
I've set up a simple domain providing shared disk space to a small
company. As an extension of this, I've connected satellite office via
openvpn, and am mounting a chare on that site over cifs, and backing it
up on to the main domain storage.
This remote share is on windows XP, and it's throwing up a couple of
errors due to incompatible wide characters -

performance tweaks??
Has anyone any tips on improving samba performance with debian lenny?
I've set up a raid 0 partition on a couple of new WD 1TB disks,
formatting the majority of it as a single reiserfs partition. I must
admit I should probably have set the blocksize to something other than
the default at the time, but now it's well populated, changing stuff
like that is going to be a big problem.

Samba4 AD SysVol Replication (HowTo + Script)
Hello,
as it is often a question here on the lists and by many others on the
internet, I wrote a new HowTo for setting up a SysVol replication
"workaround", until Samba supports this feature by itself:
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/SysVol_Replication
For the replication process, I wrote a Bash script, put it on my
webspace and linked it in the HowTo, which should describe

How to configure samba to use LDAP/Kerberos authentication without using winbind?
We have a environment that the we cannot(don't want to) use winbind to join
samba server to the win2003 AD(with LDAP RFC2307bis Schema and uid/gid
setup for users).
We managed to get the linux (CentOS) to accept windows domain user ssh to
it(with nss/nslcd/kerberos settings).
But couldn't make samba server to use the same way to serve windows domain
users.

problems with samba as pdc.
This is a really weird one. To the ( XP Pro ) client, I can join the domain, but can never log in. I've looked all over for a troubleshooting guide, but none have found the problem.
Help!!!
System: samba 3.3.4 on 64 bit debian lenny patched to current. Gigabit lan environment.
When Joining the domain ( over an openvpn connection ), the client log shows:

Suggest changing dirhash defaults for FreeBSD 9.2.
I have been experimenting with dirhash settings, and have scoured the internet
for other peoples' experience with it.
(I found the performance improvement in compiling has forestalled the need to
add an SSD drive. ;-)
I believe that increasing the following values by 10 would benefit most FreeBSD
users without disadvantage.
vfs.ufs.dirhash_maxmem: 2097152 to 20971520

I can't get iaxComm to connect to guest@misery.digium.com
On advice from others I dropped gnophone in favor of iaxComm.
I am operating on an IBM T30 laptop Redhat Linux 2.4.20-8 with an Intel
i810 audio chipset (comes in the laptop).
I am using the Gnome desktop.
There is no reference to alsa or oss to be found.
All audio components function fine.
Nothing else is running and I have an active broadband internet
connection.
I can ping www.digium.com

WINS misery.. please help :(
I have been trying all day to make WINS work for me, unsuccessfully.
I have a rather complex setup, that works fine over a LAN, WINS and
all. However, the LAN was a substitution for the internet, and when the
setup is moved to the real internet, the WINS aspect of my setup does
not work.
I need some information about WINS over different subnets. I have
two machines both running linux +

Antwort: Re: Spoolss permissions, NT & XP print driver misery (2.2.2/2.2.3a/2.2.4pre)
Hi Jerry,
Thank you for this statement! ... the problem in the last days/weeks was,
no infos from the team members!
It is no big problem if something is not working. But, if we are making
tests and reports bugs/problems and so on ... And no one from the team
give a answer ! This will make us crazy, too.
You and all of the team members make a great job!
... we will see us in Goettingen!

samba3 upgrade misery
Greetings, all
We've been running samba2 for far too long - I'd just never found the time to
upgrade, and it wasn't a priority since it WORKED. Our little Solaris9/SPARC64
box happily served our few gigs of files to 20 users, and played the part of a PDC.
Then I upgraded CUPS, and discovered samba2 doesn't like cups-1.2 libs, and
figured it was as good an excuse to make the

Is support being removed for ordinary users to run sshd?
Hello Darren,
Could you comment on this issue being raised by myself and
Corinna Vinschen?
This will create big problems for me.
I'm not clear if this is a conscious decision supported by solid
reasons or if it is just collateral damage.
Thank you for all you work!

Samba + LDAP = Misery
I have been working on this for weeks now and feel like I am at a dead-end.
I am using Samba 3.0 (Head) and OpenLDAP (2.0) and smbldap-tools 0.7 and
cannot join either a Linux machine or Windows 2000 machine to the domain.
If any of you have some ideas they would be much appreciated.
Highlights:
- I have a root defined (UID and GID of 0).
- Trying to join the domain will successfully add my

Questions for minimal AD DC, DNS setup and Posix use
Our plan is to have one AD DC running in Head Office, RODC's at Branches and a second writeable DC at a contingency site. Fileshares
will run on separate servers. The Windows 2003/2008 Servers use authentication services from samba4 and run applications. Our
current environment is Samba-3.6.9 PDC,BDCs & fileshares, openldap stores samba, posix and acts as heimdal backend - for SSO.

Dynamic DNS Updates
Having reconfigured Samba4 to use BIND as a DNS server to get dynamic DNS
updates working, I'm still working to understand the system.
The Windows client I'm testing only seems up update DNS if I run ipconfig
/registerdns. It doesn't update DNS at startup or IP change OOTB. Is it
expected that Windows clients run a startup script running ipconfig
/registerdns or have dynamic updates

SIP password encryption
A really, really quick question here!
Am I right in thinking that all passwords sent across the network in
Asterisk are MD5 encrypted without me having to specifically set anything up
to make it happen?
Thanks so much!
