Help Connecting server districts
I am working on a project to unite several local school districts. We will have 14 different districts, every district would have their own asterisk box on location. We all have fiber lines running to a central location at our isd. This provides connectivity to all the districts. 1. would it be wiser to install a asterisk box at the central location of the ISD and have all asterisk boxes

wrong fill colors in polygon-map
Dear all, I would like to produce a map with information about the patenting activity in German districts, by coloring districts with different degrees of patenting activity in different colors. I work with the packages maptools, maps and spdep. The map data is read from an external .shp file (+ the corresponding .shx and .dbf files). Plotting a map with the IDs or the patenting indicator itself

Hi is there a way in R to create a new column vector with the numbers of 2 others columns simply appended? Example : I have a column with provinces codes (1 to 19) I have a second column with districts codes (1 to ##, depending on the province) I want to create a third column with a code that would be unique for each district: Province  District   District_Unique 1             1            11

Connecting to OSX machines with user name/passwd different than login name/passwd
Sorry for the long post - but this is a unique situation as the clients (iMacs) are controlled by our central school district IT dept. As the local tech guy at a high school I'm allowed some control - creativity, but not much. End goal: Setup a linux file server using samba to connect to tightly controlled macs in a school setting. I said tightly controlled because the district IT folks

Re: PR#886: Error (?) in documentation of 'swiss'
No, you're quite right, I was wrong. I must have been very confused when I put up the first 'bug' report, #886. I noticed my error a couple of days after and put up a comment to that effect on R-bugs, but it seems to have vanished (or alternatively I did that wrong as well). I agree with you on the criterion for the choice of districts as well. There remains a minuscule discrepancy

How to completely mirror(backup) whole system?
I have 7 wokstations, I would like to use my mandrake server to mirror bosses workstation(it is RedHat9.0) onto separate hard drive on the server, so if something happens to her system, I could just take out that hard drive and replace the crashed one and limit my recovery time to 30 minutes at most. Is complete backup nightly the right solution? How would I go about it? Also, I would like to

map issues
Hi ! I have a shapefile that I can easily read into R using library(maptools). My problem stems from some warning messages that come even though everything seems to work fine. library(maptools) districts <- read.shape(filen = "a_ds", dbf.data = TRUE) length(districts$Shapes) so far so good. when I try and plot this I get a nice plot and a warning message: > plot(districts)

Re: PR#886: Error (?) in documentation of 'swiss'
>From k.j.mcconway@open.ac.uk Wed Mar 28 16:46:49 2001 Hardly crucial, but I've come upon a potential error in the documentation of the 'swiss' datafram in the R base package. The description accurately matches what is said in the Mosteller and Tukey source quoted, but according to the data archived at Princeton (links from http://opr.princeton.edu/archive/eufert/switz.html), the

Palm Vacations, Look At A Jamaica Vacation For Total Relaxation
Palm Vacations, Look At A Jamaica Vacation For Total Relaxation There is no place like Jamaica for a vacation that consists of total relaxation. After all, isn?t that what a vacation is for? Get away from the office, get away from people demanding your time, get away from customers demanding the impossible, just get away. But where you ?get away to? will have a significant impact on how you view

Ranking within a classification variable.
Suppose I have a data frame with two columns ``district'' and ``score'' --- score is numeric; district may be considered categorical. I wish to append to this data frame a third column whose entries are the ranks of ``score'' ***within*** district. I've tried fiddling about with tapply() and by() but the result is a list whose i-th component consists of the ranks of

Questionnaire Analysis virtually without continuous Variables
Hello! I am doing an analysis on a questionnaire of hunters taken in 4 different districts of some mysterious foreign country. The aim of the study was to gather info on the factors that determine the hunting success of a peculiarly beautiful bird in that area. All variables are factors, i.e. they are variables such as "Use of Guns - yes / no", "Use of Dogs - yes / no" and

First Rails project: input welcomed
Hi everyone, I''m working on my first Rails project and I''d like some input before I get started coding in earnest. My previous Web app development experience has been in standard Python CGI and Zope. I''m here to find out more about Rails. I work in technology in an average-sized school district (8,000 students) in Minnesota (USA). One of the problems in our
