XFCE-Terminal can't display latin1 encoding
Hi,
Much of my work consists in connecting to the MySQL monitor on our
public library database server and working in it. Until recently, I've
been using either Gnome-Terminal in GNOME, or Konsole in KDE. Since all
the systems, both server and clients, default to fr_FR.UTF-8, and MySQL
uses a default latin1 charset, I usually switch the displayed charset
within Gnome-Terminal or Konsole.

Data corruption on external hard disk
Hi,
I'm using CentOS 5 on all my computers here (work + home) and I'm very
satisfied with it.
Some time ago I purchased a 300 GB external hard drive to store films,
music, pictures and documents. Since there's no Windows machine around
here (small South French village, town hall and public library use Linux
:o)), I replaced the FAT filesystem on the disk by an ext2 filesystem.

Migrate Outlook Express mail to Thunderbird?
Hi,
A friend's laptop just quit working under Windows XP, so I 1) booted a
Knoppix Live CD 2) configured the thing for my LAN 3) scp'ed recursively
Documents\ and\ Settings/, 4) wiped the hard disk clean and 5) installed
CentOS 5.1. No dual-boot, no prisoners, just 100% GNU/Linux :oD
I managed to find the contents of the Outlook Express Mailboxes in some
obscure subdirectory.

Multiple FreeNX servers and SSH ports
Hi,
I've setup a small LAN of two desktops running CentOS 5 in a medical
office. Both are connected to the Internet via a small modem/router.
Recently I played around with FreeNX on my own desktop, and I'd like to
install it on these two computers. On my PC, I just redirected port 22
in the router, so SSH (and thus FreeNX) requests from the outside get
redirected to my desktop PC.

Set hostname via DHCP ?
Hi.
I just setup one of my machines as a DHCP server. I'd like it to handle
the hostnames of clients. Don't know if this is an orthodox thing to do
(feel free to add your comments :oD). Here's the server's relevant lines
of dhcpd.conf:
--8<-------
...
# Envoyer les noms d'h?tes aux clients

# Adresses statiques

Router for SOHO network - hardware considerations
Hi,
Last week I finished installing a small network in a private school :
one server (an old IBM X225), seventeen desktops (Fujitsu Siemens PIV
2.4 GHZ, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD), all running CentOS 5.5.
One extra machine is acting as a router, in that it is installed between
the DSL modem and the network, with two Ethernet cards, and it's taking
care of DHCP, DNS, NTP and also acts like a

Permission problem
Hi,
I have to solve an apparently simple permission problem, and I don't
know if it's the sunny weather or birdsong, well... I just can't figure
it out. Here goes.
I have a bunch of users in a public library. Some are "administrators":
they handle the library, write the docs for everyone, etc. Then you have
the "agents", who take care of lending books and

Labeling lines in xyplot
Hello,
I apologize in advance as this example seems really elementary. Below I
have created a simple scatterplot with lines. I would like to label
each line with the name of the village, instead of using a legend. Can
someone please let me know how to do it.
Thanks in advance -- John

clusters in zero-inflated negative binomial models
Dear all,
I want to build a model in R based on animal collection data, that look like the following
Nr	Village	District	Site	Survey	Species	Count
1	AX	A	F	Dry	B	0
2	AY	A	V	Wet	A	5
3	BX	B	F	Wet	B	1
4	BY	B	V	Dry	B	0
Each data point shows one collection unit in a certain Village, District, Site, and Survey for a certain Species. 'Count' is the number of animals collected in that

NFS and firewall issues
Hi,
I have a small home LAN, where one machine (192.168.1.1) connects to the
internet via dialup (no DSL here) and shares the connection with IP
masquerading. To achieve this, I tried out various recipes found on the
internet, and finally put this in /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
--8<------ rc.local ------------
#!/bin/sh

# This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.

General questions about security
Hi,
I admit I never gave security that much thought, that is, except the
most basic security rules like choosing good passwords, or reasonable
file and directory permissions. But now I have to change that, since
I'll soon have to setup a dedicated production server for our public
libraries.
I wonder where to begin. I would say first thing is get a series of
"auditing" tools

Traditional network interface naming scheme vs. persistent naming
Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with CentOS 7 in order to get a grasp of
everything that's new.
After having read the FAQ entry on network interface names, I decided to
revert to the tradictional interface naming scheme by adding the
relevant kernel options to the bootloader. This went well, I have now
two interfaces names 'eth0' and 'eth1' as expected.
In my office

"Linux aux petits oignons" - Book about Linux, based on CentOS 5.x
Hi,
I'm currently busy finishing "Linux aux petits oignons", a practical
introduction to Linux, aimed primarily at the frustrated Windows user.
This is the first of two volumes, it's written in french, and all
examples in the book are based on CentOS. (Note: looks like I'll have to
update some screenshots to 5.3 :oD)
Usually the first question that arises is: why not

Flash plugin not working
Hi,
I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5, with a minimal GNOME desktop. I
configured RPMForge as third party repo.
I updated everything first, then installed flash-plugin. (And yes, I
restarted Firefox... :oD). All I see when I try to see some things Flash
on the Internet, like Youtube or the likes, I get... nothing. The space
remains white. Sometimes a black square will appear, sometimes it

Persistent desktop icons ?
Hi,
Is it possible to configure persistent desktop icons, e. g. shortcuts
that users can't delete ? On most of my client desktops, I have some
home-made shortcuts, like here for example :
http://www.microlinux.fr/configurations.html
The shortcut on the lower left corner of the screen launches the public
library management system.
Most of the users are quite computer-illiterate, and more

Introduction
Hi,
I'm a 40-year old sysadmin living in Montpezat, a small village in the
sunny south of France. I'm a Linux user since 2001, when I made my first
steps on a 486 with a Slackware 7.1 CD. I've tried maybe two dozen
distributions, but I've stayed mostly with Slackware and Debian.
Since last summer, I work as a sysadmin for our "Communaut? de
Communes", a group of 16

Trouble running 'alsamixer' as normal user on headless box with minimal system
Hi,
I just transformed an old Pentium III 500 into a headless jukebox. It's
installed in the basement, near the stereo. There's only a base CentOS
system on it (GNOME unchecked, package customization checked and then
everything unchecked). From there on, I just installed the ALSA utils,
and vorbis-tools. The machine is only supposed to do one thing (and to
do it well, UNIX philosophy

OT: Linux WYSIWYG HTML Editors
I have KomPozer installed, but after using M$ FrontPage for years,
KomPozer looks like it is going to have a learning curve and I want to
get away from FrontPage and Windows. I know Mark (MHR) uses
SeaMonkey. Wondering if there is anything else I can use on Linux that
is easier on a FrontPage user. I found this article:

Apache: confusion about virtual hosts and DNS on a local network
Hi,
I set up a webserver with Apache on one of the machines on the local
network. There's a DNS configured for the LAN, with a dummy domain name
(presbytere.local), and every machine is pingable by its hostname. The
webserver runs on the machine 'buildbox'.
The webserver actually has two (static) websites on it, for testing and
fiddling purposes. Each site's pages are stored
